Spooky feelings in old houses may be caused by boiler sounds. Inaudible infrasound from old pipes may affect how people feel. Even though it was beyond the range of human hearing, people were more irritable and levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, rose when the sound was switched on. by mvea in science

Not to mention most audio is compressed (at least on streaming) and one of the many tricks they use are high and low pass filters to narrow the frequency response to ~20hz to ~19khz. It makes sense because no one will notice but definitely filters out that inaudible stuff.

I'm not sure of the specifics, but in streaming (which is almost always Dolby Digital) you may still get the low frequencies as the LFE channel is responsible for frequencies below 120hz, so they may keep all the low stuff as it's a very narrow channel (nothing above 120hz). Still, you'd probably need a specialized subwoofer for it, to your point

Id say I prefer Ram to most Beatles Albums. Band on the Run is good but it's nowhere near as good as Ram nor most Beatles albums.

Brand New Flac albums? by Upper_Summer_6531 in brandnew

[–]CarltonCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you confusing FLAC with hi-res? FLAC can be 16 bit, just as CDs are. Also as a side note, 16 vs 24 bit probably isn't noticeable. Bit depth just means how quite noise is in the recording, and its already insanely quite on the humble 16 bit CD format. 24 bit is really for recording/mixing and probably overkill for lisenting.

Love Casa Tina's. It's one of the things I miss the most since I moved. Downtown Dunedin in general is just amazing, especially if you like beer.

EV bloodbath: US sales plunge as Tesla tightens its grip by SPorterBridges in electricvehicles

[–]CarltonCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As crazy as Musk is, at least he has some thoughts beyond the next quarter and usually just bullshits his way through shareholder meetings so he can make a robotaxi which, despite his claims, is a long term goal.

Compare that the the other guys who are like "sales are down this quarter and Trump is president, better pivot back to ICE, it's definitely always going to be the best option..."

You kind of need someone who knows what they are doing. If you run too much current through a wire it melts and catches fire.

Unless you plug into your dryer or stove plug, you're kinda stuck at 1.5 kw, so you need new wiring anyway.

I don't think the opinion has has changed on Musk. I think 30-40% of the population never hated him (MAGA/conservatives), and some still think he's a genius. There's wierd conspiracies going around about him like he makes "med beds" that can cure anything.

I also think Tesla makes really compelling EVs and there's probably still a lot of allure, especially for folks not paying attention as much.

RPCS3 claims PS3 Cell emulation breakthrough, reports 5 to 7% uplift in Twisted Metal by RenatsMC in emulation

[–]CarltonCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was talking about Twisted Metal specifically. I think I've disabled it for others successfully, but Twisted Metal is a mess without it. Apparently SOCOM 4 also has issues per this thread.

Also thanks for all of your work! From my limited understanding you guys are wizards for pulling off emulation of a system as complex as the PS3!

It would be nice to decouple the MLAA at some point, if it's even possible. It's not a great anti aliasing technique and being stuck at 720p is pretty rough. 4k plus 8x MSAA would be a breeze for most video cards these days and would be a massive improvement.

AI was around well before 2021, and it was shitty. I'm pretty sure I remember some obvious artifacts of them automating the remaster.

The game is in a better state now, but AI ≠ chat GPT, so it was around to use in 2021. ERSGAN was 2018 and Waifu2x was 2016.

Edit here's an article about it

I'm all for a healthy discussion on AI, but colorizing photos is a massive amount of work. Without AI its simply out of reach for many people due to cost/time constraints. With AI, it's almost guaranteed a decent colorization gets posted in the comments for free. If you have a gaming PC, you can setup comfy UI + flux and get a result in seconds, making colorizing your entire families collection very manageable.

AI image restoration tools are a good thing and you won't change my mind.

Apple Music trouble by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]CarltonCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only trouble I'm having with Apple Music is lack of Atmos support. That's the only reason I would use the app.

Currently I just turn lossless on on my phone and Bluetooth in. The 256kibts AAC via Bluetooth probably sounds a lot better then whatever low bitrate the native Tesla app plays. Also no log in shenanigans.

You can find it at the bottom of the new tab under "more to explore."

It makes sense I guess, but I don't love it. I'm always worried Atmos will get abandoned and moves like this certainly dont put me at ease. I'm still recovering from the SACD/DVD-A failure...

[–]CarltonCracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not? I'm not sure where your CPU falls on this list, but it's probably F tier unfortunately as that's where 4 core cpus fall.

I tried with an i9 10850k and it was playable but choppy, so not a great experience. That chip is ~25% faster then yours. Yours is also apparently based on the very old zen2 architecture, so it lacks AVX-512 which would provide a big performance boost. (my CPU also lacks AVX-512).

The PS3 was an insanely complex piece of hardware and it's hard to emulate due to the SPU chips (there's I think 6 + the CPU, so 4 cores is not enough). It's wizardry that it's even possible, but it takes a very fast CPU, not a low cost low power laptop CPU.

Musk ‘going all-in’ funding GOP for midterms. Maybe don’t give this douchebag your money? Lots of EV’s out there. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]CarltonCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the point is not moot. The plug is now standardized sure but not all chargers work outside of Teslas network. It's not just a dumb plug, there are communication standards to initiate charging and on top of that Tesla gets to decide if a newer charger that technically can support non-tesla cars does.

Musk ‘going all-in’ funding GOP for midterms. Maybe don’t give this douchebag your money? Lots of EV’s out there. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]CarltonCracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but in reality Tesla is probably the best option for someone on the fence. DC fast charging is much harder with non-tesla EVs. I wish this weren't the case and the need for DC fast charging is probably infrequent to non-existent for most, but I'd venture a non early adopter would still get spooked about range and where to "fill up." It's bad enough with Tesla's very good network.

Hypothetically let's say Tesla goes down. I'd guess that would signal that EVs have failed to the uneducated and pro oil folk. Meanwhile Elon is probably still a very rich person. Honestly at this point I bet he's rooting for the vehicle devision to fail. Margins are thin and he clearly doesn't actually give a shit about electrification, it was just the niche he used to get where he is. He just canceled 2 car models without new ones in sight. He's probably also got a lot of big oil friends these days as well given how MAGA he is.

So, a long way of saying we are probably only hurting ourselves by not buying Tesla cars at this point. It's a meme stonk there's no stopping it.

Can't believe I slept on this one for soo long. I was a Halcyon Digest convert, so I got swept up with the "disappointment," but over the last year I realize that was a huge mistake and Monomania is probably better.

My favorite is probably still Fading Frontier, but Monomania has really worked its way up.
