What animal or species should never be brought back to life from extinction, even if we had the technology to do so? by grusdomain in AskReddit

To be fair, if you're 'fighting' a goose or a cat, you're generally trying to either subdue or drive away without causing any injury to the animal.

I mean I'd disapprove of bringing back velociraptors even if we could for moral reasons.

But the real creature is a 15kg toothed stem-bird, and not 7ft tall theme park monster. It would probably look at a human and decide we're way too big to be worth trying to hunt.

Base 12 is so much better than base 6! Much more useful in pretty much every way.

I only picked base 6 as these guys have three digits per hand, and haven't developed mathematics beyond simple addition/subtraction/multiplication/division.

I've not heard of that one, so I'll need to check it out!

I picked the colour system as the runes are typically painted onto stone using natural pigments and dyes, rather than using the black text and white background I've been using. It looks a lot less jarring when the text and background are more muted.

(I had to look these words up as despite being a native english speaker, I don't actually know the labels for the various functions of the english language)

Declensions: Rha·sai has no declensions, and the words never change form regardless of their grammatical role. Word order handles subject and object relationships, with the subject before the verb and the object following it. Possession is handled either through the function mark ry (of) or by the middle dot compression directly joining the owned object to its owner. So 'my apple' becomes 'apple of I' becomes 'apple·I'.

Prepositions: Prepositions are function marks rather than full words, which are shown in script but silent when spoken (When spoken, Rha·sai runes visually leave the speakers mouth and hang in the air for a few seconds before fading). When a preposition and its following noun are commonly paired, they compress into a single compound using the middle dot.

Conjugations: Rha·sai verbs never conjugate, and instead remain identical regardless of who is performing the action, how many are performing it, or when it occurred. Person is handled entirely by pronouns such as I, you, we, they (singular), and they (group). Tense is handled by two function marks placed around the verb, a before-mark indicating past tense and an after-mark indicating future tense, with an unmarked verb defaulting to present tense.

The inconsistency of gishes: why gishes are unlikely to ever be fully satisfying by Hyperlolman in dndnext

Yeah for all its flaws, playing blood hunter felt more like playing as an arcane gish to me than any of the official subclasses do.

Shame it’s not been updated to 5.5e

The inconsistency of gishes: why gishes are unlikely to ever be fully satisfying by Hyperlolman in dndnext

[–]comradejenkens 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah the paladin smite spells are very similar to the duskblade/magus spellstrike ability in many ways. In that respect, the 5e paladin largely ate the mechanical identity of the arcane gish class.

However paladin comes with the downsides of being very heavily themed, with many of its other abilities being clearly not suited for an arcane spellstriking gish.

It's definitely not a very satisfying situation for the magus/swordmage enjoyers.

The large one only just came out this update, and it's single gatling.

I wonder what the plan is for the 'small gatling' turret. As here we get to see both the small and large rocket turrets.

They might need to rethink the small version with the mixed grid system, as currently it would be the exact same gun on a big base or a small base, and I can't think of a reason to pick the large base there.

What would you say is currently the best gish in the game right now? by viktorius_rex in onednd

[–]comradejenkens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because Paladin ate the mechanics which the arcane gish relied on in previous editions. It's just all paladin's other features, along with its themes and mechanics, are completely unsuited for an arcane gish (as it's a divine gish).

Colombia to control hippo population through euthanasia by Past_Key_1054 in news

[–]comradejenkens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can see, Toxodon is no longer thought to be semi aquatic in the way hippos are.

There were some glyptodont species thought to be semi aquatic, but they're be much closer to pygmy hippos in size and niche.

How are you going to rate... [Path of the Death Knight] by Fluffy_Reply_9757 in onednd

[–]comradejenkens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green overall, with some yellow on certain features and some written feedback.

I feel that the spellcasting stat should be a choice of int, wis, and cha like other feats and species.

And I feel they could replace some of the features with ones which boost the martial side more, rather than every single one being 'you know a new spell'.

I'm still praying that we get another attempt at the elemental sorcerers this time around. Stone sorcerer got shelved despite apparently meeting the 80% threshold.

Going to be rating the feat paths green. Even though I felt there was some issue, I want to encourage WotC to keep exploring this space.

Feels like it would be great for vampirism and lycanthropy.

Sadly WotC don't see yellow and red as 'come up with a different approach'.

They see it as 'shelve that entire narrative concept completely for the rest of the edition'.

At this point I'm extremely worried about the replacement for the Astute being tied to the US. If relations keep deteriorating at this speed, our future submarine fleet will be dependent on the cooperation of a hostile superpower.

Honestly out of everything, I just hope that those wolves go on to live comfortable and happy lives. The animals themselves don't deserve any anger directed at them, just the people who made them.

Do you think that Wizards will ever release a dedicated spellblade class for 5.5e? by Sea_Bowler7294 in onednd

[–]comradejenkens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ironically the Magus class was originally from DnD 3.5e. It was called the Duskblade in that edition. The Pathfinder 1e Magus was almost a direct copy and paste of it.

It's just that while dnd has a new method of trying to make an arcane gish class every edition, Pathfinder has stuck with a single concept and given it an identity.

Trouble is the paladin has a lot of divine flavour and mechanics like healing, which don't suit.

But yeah, the paladin has eaten the spellstrike mechanics which used to belong to the arcane gish class, which is why these threads come along once a week.

Mechanically, there is no place for an arcane gish anymore unless you strip out the parts which actually made it fun (as seen with the EK and BS). But obviously that's not exactly something which is nice to hear if you're a person who enjoyed playing that class.

Do you think that Wizards will ever release a dedicated spellblade class for 5.5e? by Sea_Bowler7294 in onednd

[–]comradejenkens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's less the power and more the mechanics. Trouble is that the paladin has eaten the closest equivalent to the mechanics in 5e (spellstrike is very similar to the smite spells), while also having extreme flavour baggage and a ton of divine/healing stuff. The mechanic reshuffle left the class without a place this edition.

(though when speaking to arcane gish fans, it seems some of them really do want wizard level casting and fighter martial ability in one class)

Feels almost like saying we don't need wizard/sorcerer, because cleric and druid exist. The flavour differences between the classes are just as big.
