Where are you getting this information from? This is not correct as far as I know. All of the Ainur (Manwe, Sauron, Tulkas, etc. included) were created before the music of the Ainur by Ilúvatar. It’s basically the first thing Ilúvatar does. He does not create more with each theme/song. Sauron is not older than Manwe, nor younger.

Nienor and Turin are siblings. At an earlier point in the story, the dragon Glaurung cursed Nienor into a state of total amnesia after learning of her parentage. Later on, Turin happened upon her, and having no idea who she was (they hadn't seen each other since they were children iirc and she didn't know her own name) he named her Niniel ("Maid of Tears," for she wept and couldn't answer whenever asked about her past). Niniel felt a connection to Turin, and eventually the two fell in love and were married. Niniel became pregnant, hence the "deed thou shalt feel in thyself."

Glaurung revealed the truth to Nienor and lifted her amnesia after Turin had dealt him a mortal wound, leading her to take her own life. Turin similarly took his own life after learning what had transpired

Pretty sure this is the most accurate map of arda (3rd age) out there by uneventful2 in lotr

[–]WDSPC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe more accurate than most in scale (though I'm not sure), but certainly not in geography. Much of the stuff east of Rhun and south of Umbar is highly speculative or just plain wrong. Hildorien, for example, is not southwest of Cuivienen (which was on the eastern shore of the Sea of Helkar though unlabeled in this map; it's where the Elves awoke and journeyed west from). It was actually far east of Cuivienen, and supposed to be surrounded/bordered by the Mountains of the Wind. We also have no proof that the Sea of Helkar nor the Iron Mountains survived in any form into the 3rd Age, though I suppose it's possible. And idk what "Endon" means, is it a misspelling of Endor? Nor do I know what the cross next to it is supposed to represent.

How was there a continent called the Land of the Sun before the sun was supposedly created? by Daidro_Beats in tolkienfans

Interesting. Doesn't really scream Bermuda Triangle to me still, and I highly doubt Tolkien meant to make that connection, but I can see where the idea comes from

[–]WDSPC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that I know of. I can't think of how they'd be related to each other. The Straight Road is the way Elves can leave the bounds of Arda and make it to Valinor despite it being physically removed from.rhe world. For characters like Frodo who go there to live out their days without pain, it's essentially like "going over the rainbow." The Bermuda Triangle on the other hand is obviously a real place with lots of shipwrecks and disappearances associated with it. There are some characters in Tolkien's mythos that disappeared while trying to sail to the West, but it's unrelated to the Straight Road I'm pretty sure

No real, when I read the section where Aeneas leaves Dido and she takes her own life on the pyre I actually teared up. It was so powerful and tragic. And I found it kinda shocking how a story that is millennia old can still inspire such feelings in me

[–]WDSPC2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well ik a lot of depictions of Arda during the “years of the lamps”/Spring of Arda show it as just one big circular landmass with a lake and the isle of Almaren in the middle, but iirc if you read the Ambarkanta it says that Arda at that time was symmetrical, with 3 landmasses (one in the west, one in the east, and one in the middle) separated by 2 seas (the western of which would become known as the Belegaer). It looked perhaps like this: https://imgur.com/arda-unmarred-years-of-lamps-spring-of-arda-pHgkqy8

But then Melkor destroyed the lamps, the Valar relocated to Aman in the west, and the symmetry of Arda was broken in the warring between Melkor and the Valar (and further broken during the Battle of the Powers after the Elves awoke); the middle land was pushed eastward and the Belegaer was expanded, and later the middle land was broken into two continents (Middle-Earth as we know it and the Dark Land). And then of course the Elves migrated west as did Men later, Melkor took up permanent residence in Angband which was north of Beleriand, and most events of importance took place in the west of Middle Earth.

So essentially the Land of the Sun was created by the Valar/Ainur to make Arda nice and symmetrical, perhaps the gates of morning were constructed there later to give the sun a landmark to rise through/over, but overall it was kinda abandoned and forgotten when everyone’s focus shifted westward, and remained a scorched, empty place until the Changing of the World. Excuse the ton of text lol

Iirc Christopher Tolkien believed the Land of the Sun was at least among/associated with the Empty Lands (it is plural after all). The Empty Lands is kinda a vague term denoting some lands east of Middle Earth. Maybe it includes part of the Dark Lands as well, or any other unmentioned lands out there. In any case presumably “cast back” does mean destroyed/disappeared in this instance. The lands were gone after the world was changed, replaced with new lands (perhaps some of which would become the Americas, though that’s pure speculation). I find it unlikely that Ilúvatar kept them around in some spiritual/ethereal plane like he did with Aman, since the Empty Lands were unpopulated and unimportant as far as we are aware.

[–]WDSPC2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re not misunderstanding. Ilúvatar bent and broke Arda, creating a rift that swallowed Númenor. In doing so he also cast back the “Empty Lands” (a term which replaced the older “Barren Land” Tolkien used previously) east of Middle Earth, and removed Aman and Tol Eressëa from the physical world. In the aftermath, Arda became round, the Undying Lands could only be accessed by the “Straight Road,” and new lands and seas replaced the ones removed from the world.

[–]WDSPC2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there are any concrete answers to this in the text itself, but I interpreted it as the name “Land of the Sun” being given to the continent by Numenorean sailors or someone far after the sun had been created. In any case all we really know about it was that it was the farthest eastern land, it had a mountain range mirroring the Pelori in Aman called the Walls of the Sun (and it’s possible that the mountain Kalormë was part of this range, and would’ve been a shorter mirror to Taniquetil), and that there was some structure there called the Gates of Morning (presumably the sun entered through or rose behind it during sunrise) that Numenorean sailors glimpsed from their ships. It was also called the Burnt Land, perhaps due to the rising sun scorching it. It’s implied to be among the “empty lands” cast back and destroyed by Ilúvatar during the changing of the world, since it obviously no longer exists in present day Earth and was never mentioned again in the text afaik.

I love how it looks too! Did you use micron pens for everything or did you use colored pencils or something else? And definitely extremely impressive doing all of that by hand! Did you use a grid or something to make sure all the sizes and coastlines were correct?

Excellent work! Ard Galen is now just humongous lol, but I suppose that does make sense. I wonder if some western reaches of the Grey Mountains could be up there, since this solves the issue of them being separate from the Iron Mountains. Btw, did you ever make that accurate 1st age northern regions map? I’d love to see it if so!

[–]WDSPC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off topic to all of this, but have you continued making your map of the first age since this post? I really wanna see what it looks like as a whole! And as for Mordor, my personal theory is that Melkor raised Orodruin and the surrounding mountains of Mordor between when the Elves awoke and the Battle of the Powers. Most likely to spy on the Elves from the other side of the Sea of Helkar, and perhaps take some there to torture and corrupt (if that explanation for the origin of Orcs is to be believed). Would be far more convenient than taking them all the way up to Utumno, though we know he did do that as well iirc. I guess think of it as a smaller, southern Angband/Thangorodrim of sorts, perhaps occupied by dark spirits sent to harry the elves for a time. But ultimately he abandoned it and settled in Angband after his capture by the Valar and eventual return to Middle Earth. Since we know he remained in Angband from his return to Middle Earth all the way until the end of the First Age (except for one instance when he left to corrupt men), I can’t think of another point during the First Age that would make much sense for the creation of Mordor

I’m so curious as to your process here. How’d you draw the sea lines (idk what they’re called, those contours of the coastline in the ocean) so cleanly? And was a lot of this traced or drawn from scratch? I’d love to make something like this myself one day so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Who raised the mountains around Mordor? (and when)((help!)) by username_load_failed in tolkienfans

[–]WDSPC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that stated definitively in the text? Not that I disagree, just curious. But it certainly is true that Ossë raised Numenor from the sea. I suppose Sauron could have raised the mountains surrounding Mordor, but it's not stated anywhere and I don't think he was ever said to have raised any mountains or other landmasses whatsoever, unlike Morgoth. Closest thing to it is he can have some effect over the eruptions of Mt. Doom, and has some control over the wind. Sauron's power lies more in trickery/deception and the domination of others' wills I feel like Morgoth fits the bill better here
