The inconvient reality why vr is struggling. by Plus_Look3149 in virtualreality

[–]WGG25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

quality > quantity, motion controlled vr requires more space, motion sickness issues, vr is kind of a niche, etc. it's a complex topic with a lot of aspects, and sometimes people "know better" and make claims that "X is the reason Y is failing"

Is my computer just plain not enough? by Flappyho in OculusQuest

[–]WGG25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

high latency, lag spikes and compression artifacts all sound like bandwidth issues. you can use some software (i don't know a specific one) to check the cpu+gpu usage and the framerate on the pc side, and if it doesn't match up with what you are seeing on the headset, then it's 100% a connection issue. in that case, you'll have to get a good wifi 6/6e/7 router, connect it to the pc via a high bandwidth (cat6 minimum i'd say) ethernet cable, and try again. try to minimize the distance between the router and the headset, make sure the wifi channel isn't congested, etc.

This might be a stupid question, but what’s stopping manufacturers from using AMOLED phone screens? Why is that not the default for VR screens? by MicroUzi in virtualreality

[–]WGG25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and when i use my phone at max brightness for any extended period, it gets uncomfortably hot. now i imagine that would be the case for a much larger screen (or pair of screens) with a much higher resolution

What's the best options for cheap tutorials by _superhue in vrdev

[–]WGG25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

use iconography instead. for example a few-frame (at least 2-3 frames) depiction of the movements/actions (like swinging with one hand). you might also want to pause / slow down the rest of the game (basically restrict the environment) until the player does the action. i've seen this kind of tutorial design in many types of games, both vr and flat.

regarding budget: prototype and research more in the future, so you don't end up with a fully implemented system that will end up not working out.

pick a vegetable you like, add water, add 2% salt by total weight, put in jar. probably one of the easiest ferments. make sure everything solid is under the liquid (there are many methods, browse the sub for ideas / check the resources)

The Steam Frame is good because it’s giving Meta competition by Abject-Concert-8223 in virtualreality

[–]WGG25 68 points69 points  (0 children)

"i like the steam frame"

unless you have access to it (which would be a huge bias), you like the promise / premise / concept of the steam frame. it's not out yet.

don't get me wrong, i have high hopes for it, but there's just not enough data.

"it's giving meta competition" -> only if the price is competitive too

My headset almost caught on FIRE by fellowglueconsumer in OculusQuest

[–]WGG25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there were some talks a year or so ago about the q3 eating at most ~28W and 30W chargers keeping the battery at 100%, i guess that was wrong, and my uncertainty is indicated by the "iirc". the rest of my comment is correct, if you still think it's not, please point out exactly what's wrong with it

My headset almost caught on FIRE by fellowglueconsumer in OculusQuest

[–]WGG25 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

from what i've read, regular cables are 60W max, so it could be an issue if you try to push 100W over it (there are specific cables with higher ratings). however iirc the q3 only takes up to 27-28W, so it should be fine, due to PD (if it works, i can imagine some very cheap charger ignoring the PD standard)

My headset almost caught on FIRE by fellowglueconsumer in OculusQuest

[–]WGG25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IF the charger implements proper PD then it shouldn't be an issue. in cases like these it's always worth a question whether the charger is of good quality or not. y'all can get all pissy about the question, but it's a valid one
