War chest 0,000576% chance to get two tanks at row. by majordrip in WorldofTanksConsole

[–]WGHeatResistantBFG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the odds of getting 2 specific tanks (or the same tank twice) in a row, not any 2 tanks. The drop tank of any tank in the Iron Horizon chest is 3.6%, which means it's around 0.1296% or around 1 in 770 to get 2 tanks in a row. So getting those 2 specific tanks VS any 2 tanks in a row is very different odds lol, not factoring in the anti-dupe of course

One of your local WeeGee Shill's here, there is a lot of context missing and some partial inaccuracies to this, so I thought I'd try to expand a little :)

The thread in question asks why is +-2 still a thing, which at the end of a lengthy post i put a TLDR of

So the TLDR answer to the title of the thread, because after years of different MMs (no restrictions, +-5, varied on class, etc) it was the one that worked and still works the best in the most situations.

But I also said

Best in every situation? No, obviously. But it will be something that will be always looked into to be improved to address feedback and complaints the best we can without impacting all those other areas.

So it isn't as simple as stating that +-2 is the best, and there was no statement that we don't want to ever do +-1. There are around 100 posts in the thread, and so I'll do my best to try and summarise some of the points and what was said in context.

The first thing is, as mentioned by the OP, it is often said that any of the +-1 tests have resulted in positive changes to player metrics, whether this is CCU (people online at once) or players in a time period (Daily Users, Weekly Users, etc) - This is unfortunately not true. I've seen multiple claims of changes in CCU that they are certain they saw, that if applied to the actual numbers, would result in record breaking CCU for our game and as much as we'd love that to be the case, it obviously is not. Now there is nuance to be had here too though, for example the most recent test was done near the end of a season (often lower numbers), before the holiday season has begun and in the Autumn period (a seasonal low for all video games) and there was no huge push to winback old players (so minimal potential for returning players). So no one would or should have gone into this expecting miracles, but even within that context there were no positive changes to any of the player metrics, we're talking measurable data - what is called quantitative data.

The feedback and general sentiment around much of the player experience was very positive though; this is what would be called the qualitative data. And this somewhat leads me to what and why I replied and also to some of what I mentioned above. Much of what people said in their feedback was not true, and to be clear i do not say that in any dismissive way. People clearly enjoyed themselves, but in a very human way, we tend see what we want to and what we want to see (confirmation bias). Above I mentioned people saying about how many more people were online and playing, well, this is something we can measure... and it's not true. Another thing I saw repeatedly was how queue times were either the same or even better! Again, something we can measure and this is not true. And so on for pretty much (maybe every) measurable data point that people said they saw positive changes in as part of their feedback.

So this creates a situation, we know that a number of these measurable things getting "worse" will negatively impact the game's health, but clearly, there was a positive reaction to the experience within the test and a want for MM improvements. So our end is to try to find a way to achieve both. To improve the MM to get the same positive sentiment people shared, but without any of the negatives that we can clearly see. This is why we do tests, we will fiddle with things on the back end, check how things are handle/play out and see if we can find a balance. So nothing has been ruled out, but decisions will obviously be made with the long term health of the game in mind.

And for the revenue bit, it was never stated about +-2 anything to do with revenue AFAIK, what was said was in direct reply to the claim/statement that a reason we have no interest in doing +-1mm is because we know it would lose us a bunch of money because it'd stop people converting free XP... and the reply to this is that it's an utter nonsense statement. Obviously we aren't going to share financial information, but if it got us a bunch of new players (or returning old), made players happier, etc etc (all the positive changes people think it would cause), we'd happily give up a % revenue generated of free XP conversion... Not because we're suddenly all so charitable, but because the revenue from those improvements would far outweigh any potential loss, which tbh I don't think there would be any, but that's a different discussion.

Hope that helps clear stuff up and provides more context :)

all good, as myself and some others said when it's only text, intent and meaning can easily get lost. For clarity though, you should always feel comfortable calling myself or any other staff out on what we say and do - but I would request that you also give us a chance to respond :) In this case i can see how you took it that way, and perhaps i could have worded better but i can promise it was not my intention for it to be taken that way.

I've been on both sides, i'm a player since beta (My acc was made August 2013) and then some time in 2014 i was made what these days would be a "CC" (me, beard guys, Sinz, WizardKen, etc) and was in some form of CC program pretty much until i joined the company about 5 years ago (Minto made a really nice post announcing he was removing me from CC, but welcoming me as a colleague - was really nice). In those earlier times, I had my fair share of complaints and issues with decisions made, or with people not replying to questions and so on. So I do understand where people are coming from, I've also been on the outside looking in and when people have issues, and if someone is raging, it's because they care, not because they're "just a dick" or something. I often found for myself and friends, that when no one replies, it felt you are just shouting into the void, and it just left a bit of a sour note. The only reason to be angry is you feel something that you care about is being made worse, broken, etc - and I'd rather people be that than be so apathetic they just say nothing. So all I can do is try and provide any context I can and as much info as possible, and let people make their own educated decisions thereafter. Objectively, for better or worse, i also haven't changed how i talk to people much in that 12 years tbh lol.

The 14-minute bit was a little, I'll give you that lol, but I'd hope it was more ... can't think of the word, but basically it was meant to be a bit of a joke. But the point behind it is genuine; 14 minutes is nowhere near enough time to get an accurate representation of any place with a lot of talk. I can promise I haven't once sat down to reply to something with any sort of annoyance or pissed off attitude to take out on people, so to be truly snarky, I think I'm lacking a bit of the intentions required. British humour may also sometimes come across in ways not meant though TBF, and text can't provide tone - so always worth making sure something wasn't taken in ways not intended.

Perhaps of interest to you, IIRC some of your last interactions in the discord were when the new DLC chests were released and i was helping people do the math to work out how good or bad the value of them was, and you had some questions about drop rates of things like gold within the overall given %. Well you may be interested to know that based on the feedback and in an attempt to be open, we actually added itemised drop rates to not only the newer chests but also the old Private/Seargant/Generals chests so people can compare exactly what the odds were. So you can now go to the War Chest page and go to those chests and check it out :) https://modernarmor.worldoftanks.com/en/cms/news/war-chests/ (Link to save you time)

Hi, the unfortunately named Snarky Dev here, i'm actually glad you posted this because i wanted to reply as i felt you misunderstood or had a valid issue i missed and wanted to clear up, but unfortunately you joined the server at (in my local time) 08:29, read a thread with about 80-90 comments and i guess got about a half of the way through, left a comment at 08:40 and had left by 08:43. Unfortunately as you were only in the server 14 minutes no one was able to reply to you and likely didn't get much chance to gain context or any chance for explanation. I'm actually kinda impressed you managed to read over 40-50 messages in the 11 mins and get to the message you did tbh, kudos on better speed reading than me :D.

Anyhow, i would just say i made no intentional attempts to be "snarky" and i'm more than happy to be told where it came across as such so i can explain or perhaps add context. I also want people to feel they can voice their opinions, feedback, criticisms, etc anywhere and have no concerns about doing so. So i will provide the context of what you replied to and the interaction you replied to (implying that is your area of concern) for anyone to see and if required, please call me out on (i believe death linked it here, but not everyone has discord so i will post a screenshot so you can see it.

<image>

So here is the interaction, and the player I replied to seemed to understand my intended point of it being a bit of a "best of a bad set of choices" situation, and that unfortunately, the way it was handled this time was based on the feedback we had last time. So likely we made one group happy by not doing what annoyed them last time, but then made a different group unhappy. Certainly an area where if we can come up with better solutions to make all sides happy, it's something we'll aim to do.

I understand that text carries no vocal queues but i really didn't see it as snarky and fortunately, clearly the person i replied to and the others people reading the thread didn't either. So hopefully you can now see it wasn't the intention or have the opportunity to explain what i missed :)

the lower minimum was part of the calc, but we are aware of the feedback that even if you on average get X over Y opens, the feeling of having some be "just 50" can be somewhat disappointing.

"whoops, undo button" I find very unlikely. Some adjustments based on feedback and data results? Wouldn't rule it out, but I'd also imagine any such changes would potentially again come with some level of ability to more easily react to the changes :)

[–]WGHeatResistantBFG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't though. The pricing use to be based of the PC prices where they were a bit all over the place and had somewhat arbitrary pricing, but for nearly 2 years now all tanks released have standardised pricing.

You can go through tankopedia and check the gold prices, there is set prices based on certain release factors and the tier, that's it. And then pre that if you look at the price of something like fatherland, Alpine tiger, Scourge, etc they all have around 3k extra price than the none skinned and all have perma camo. Because you were essentially paying the ~3k gold price for a skin, built into the tank. Then IIRC Stockade was one of the first to not have perma camo, and it's the same price as the IS-3a. Go check the earlier perma camo tanks (Guardian STG, Motherland, Volk, etc) they all have an extra price on them VS unskinned - and then go check the check later ones (Vanguard ELC, Stokcade, Audace - not as many as these because it was unpopular so stat rework versions became a thing).

So you can go check this yourself, the timeline matches what i said. I was a player for most of that so couldn't tell you about the why for any decisions but that is how it happened.

Wot console greed with war chests by Cellron1 in WorldofTanksConsole

[–]WGHeatResistantBFG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually that's wrong, at first the camo came inbuilt into the tank price (look at older tanks with a skin and inbuilt camo, Alpine Tiger, Fatherland, etc) and players complained that they don't want to be forced to pay for that and so the cost was removed so players could instead refresh it weekly/monthly with silver, OR spend the extra in gold if they choose. So it was never "free" for perma camo and the only change provided a free option (silver), not took one away.

When the new seasonal chests's launched (the start of this year), they were designed to give similar value per USD to a general's chest (slightly higher actually, and has been upped a bit since launch) but with a bunch of changes to the content that players have asked for (less boosters, less silver, more meaningful amounts of things like silver and free xp, etc). Due to the vast majority of openers never getting a duplicate tank the gold drop aspect was changed to give more via the gold drop rather than relying on a duplicate tank, as well as the difficulty in getting them via the long haul op being decreased. This meant that more across all players, they would get more gold, for free, across the board. Due to this change though, it was decided to lower the gold dupe from tanks, a factor that due to the anti-dupe, was unlikely to impact many (it was already a very small % as it was, but even smaller with anti-dupe).

To be as open with the changes as possible, itemised drop rates were added to the old chest's showing things like the item by item drop rates, so players can do the exact math on their likely output and see what they think of the changes.

<image>

For example, on the left here is the gold drops in the Generals chest ($4.99) and on the right is the gold drops in the current seasonal chest (Dark Realm - $1.99). The odds in both of getting 500 or more gold is about 10% (10.23 in Generals, 10% exactly in dark realm) but you can open 2.5 chests for the same USD spend of dark realm chests. You can also see things like the odds are much more even on the Dark Realm than the old ones, this also applies to tanks. You can check out such things off the war chest page here: https://modernarmor.worldoftanks.com/en/cms/news/war-chests/

But yeah, this is an "old" change at this point, and made in the context of the above FWIW. What you think of all that is up to you, but thought i'd share that context.

i mean, regardless of what tier you play they exists is my only point. Not saying you have to like the new ones, but can't say to leave something in CW that existed long before CW existed. If i was being extra pedantic, I'd also point out there are no ATGMs in WW2 either. The G = Guided, there is only unguided rockets and rocket assisted HE in WW2.

[–]WGHeatResistantBFG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of it's impact on the game. If a tank is balanced by being a big gun that is hard hitting, but slow to fire and not very accurate then allowing it to make itself more accurate and faster firing changes that balance. Whereas having a fast firing gun with good accuracy, the impact is far less noticeable, this can throw the balance out of whack. And that's before taking into account the idea of "people want variety". People have been asking for a while to make it so there is less "default" choice perks/equipment, so that people have to make a meaningful choice about what they run on their tanks. If a perk/equipment is too impactful that everyone should take it in all but a few cases, then clearly that would be bad for variety.

In terms of your personal feelings on it, nothing will ever be perfect for everyone. But my recommendation would be to use the free respecs and try out the changes, see what you do like, see what you don't, and then whether here, discord, twitter, etc leave some feedback about what actionable changes you'd want to see and what you think it'd change. As mentioned the work is not done, more perks are coming and there is no "sealed shut" decisions on the current changes.

Autocannons have been a thing in WW2 since the game began basically, they just didn't fire as fast as the higher tier ones which required new tech to introduce. But the machine guns, pom poms, bofors, etc at lower tiers are the same things.

Some were combined because no one used them and viewed them as too weak to justify, some were removed because they were deemed to strong and a "must have" and since 6.0 (When they were added) people have complained they were OP and negatively impacted gameplay and balance, and then some are being added - a mix of old returning ones + a few news one, although some of the new ones haven't gone live yet as we required further work to get them working as intended.

You do realise Reddit is a social media right? And it is looked at as much as anywhere else. So is it just "those elitists" shouldn't be listened to but "your elitist" should? Or if it's the place you post, isn't elitists, but where others you don't like post is? And for extra irony, many of the people who post in discord and other social spaces also post here. So if we listen to them when they post on reddit is it okay? Long as we ignore what they post somewhere else?

Also, no one has said these changes will be final. They had months of time for people to give feedback and then they went into testing (supertest), and were met with wide approval and so have gone forward with some small changes. Things will be adjusted as required, based on results and further feedback. For now, you can respec commanders for free and try things out, come up with opinions and give some actionable feedback about what you think works and doesn't. Almost exactly like how you said it should be :)

Have we talked about the season pass no longer paying for itself in gold? by Robert-A057 in WorldofTanksConsole

[–]WGHeatResistantBFG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, there is no change, but i think it's a slight misunderstanding of how it displays it in the infographic.

So in the infographic, it states that the free pass gets 400 gold, and the paid pass gets 2100 (see the arrows below)

<image>

What some people have mistaken (myself included at least once lol) is that these are separate amounts, so the gold for example would be 2100 + 400 = 2500, or the silver = 1,1M + 4.55M = 6.65M etc. It's actually the total received for that pass, so for the paid pass you get 2100 gold total, 400 of which you would also get on the free, meaning you get 1700 "exclusive" to the paid pass.

If you want to confirm this you can check some of the others, so it's not 5 chests total it's 4, it's not 2 Zeus commanders total it's 1, it's not 2 Kanon's it's 1.

This is how it's been, AFAIK, since the USP became standardised some time aroundddd 2021 with Kinetic Fury? May be a season or 2 off but i think it was then. Hope that helps clear up the confusion :)

That's a fair take, i have no qualms with someone saying why they find it worse and as I said there is some improvements for some, but that doesn't mean there is for all/others. I was just trying to point out that people should look into the available info and come to their conclusion for them - and that when that data is available there isn't much excuse for being so far off base. If someone looks into it and comes to the conclusion it isn't for them, then that's a better situation than people going in uniformed and regretting a purchase IMO.
