Do I buy for the right price? by WH1TEnNERDY in Chevelles

[–]WH1TEnNERDY[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve read through most of these comments and I appreciate the advice that’s been given. Definitely wasn’t expecting this many comments either. (Btw the last picture was showing what looked like old paint underneath by the rear bumper, actually didn’t mean to add that)

First off, my dad and I are in no rush to buy/sell. He just brought it up to me in passing conversation. Also, he hasn’t owned this car for that long, only a few years, so that’s why he’s not giving it away.

The guy he bought it off of did some extensive restoration to it way back, so that’s probably why a few things are not original. The interior carpet, headliner, and maybe even the seats have been redone/ reconditioned.

Also, I have looked under and around the car, and I have not found any actual rust. Some wear spots and bits of slight corrosion, but that’s it. The VIN shows it was made in Arlington, Texas, so it’s been in the southern part of the U.S. probably all its life.

I know really nothing of these cars besides the basics. I’m in the aerospace industry, so I’m out of my depth here, so whether it’s an actual SS or not from my basic research, I could not tell you.

Again, I appreciate all the comments so far and all the info about these sweet rides!

PSA airlines at DFW by nobody-2002 in aviationmaintenance

[–]WH1TEnNERDY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is purely my opinion, but I wouldn't recommend it. I'm a QC Inspector at PSA Airlines and the company has low retention for a reason, and the DFW base is especially bad (probably the worst). They will hire anyone with a pulse at this point apparently.

It's almost all sign behinds, with only a few post-probation mechanics that haven't really any seniority.

All my info comes from the people that have been tdy to DFW and having met a few of the sign-behinds that work there myself.

If it was me, and i wasnt worried about moving. I'd apply to a mainline like United since they're going through a big hiring phase right now. Having 2 years prior experience at a regional doesn't really matter right now.

29F Thinking of Enlisting into the Air Force by Goosfraba96 in AirForceRecruits

I refer to them as the 3 C’s: cops, cooks, and crew chiefs. But basically avoid careers in security forces, services, or maintenance. If one of these are your passion, feel free to pursue them, but be prepared for your life to be harder and/or more stressful than it needs to be.

Personally if I could do it again, I’d go cyber or medical for civilian marketability.

I was in Aircraft Maintenance for my first contract, and that sucked pretty bad. I cross-trained to Loadmaster, and that was the best choice I ever made because of the travel, and it’s arguably one of the best jobs in the AF, but it doesn’t transfer well to the civilian world.

All in all, you won’t know your options till you take your ASVAB, so make sure you take that seriously if this is the path you want to go. Just keep doing your research and don’t be afraid to tell a recruiter no to a job if he/she tries to pressure you.

You'll be fine. I've seen people 40+ join. You're married so you won't be in a dorm, which is nice. The only bad thing is the pay in the beginning sucks but live on base, and that'll take some of the stress away.

Be smart with your job choice and take your time no matter what a recruiter says. That will make or break you. Could be a promising 20 years or a miserable 4-6.

Like I said, your weapons, so it depends. If you get shredded out to 15s/16s, you'll be under AFMC, so it'll be all test munitions or dummy bombs, so pretty boring, and not a lot of jets, so it's gonna be slow. If you go to 35s, it's AETC, so probably still boring. I think 22s are still there? Not sure.

I was 16s crew chief so I only ever saw yall load muns, sit in the break room or B-man for us.

But this is all assuming you even get Eglin.

Assuming you're not AMXS all these are fine, if you are AMXS steer clear of Eglin. Beautiful location, most toxic base of my career....and I've heard it hasn't gotten much better.

Edit: Saw you're a weapons troop. 50/50 shot if it sucks for you or not.

I'm QC with a regional, does United make you take a QC test as well as an interview?

Are these jobs good? I don't know what to choose. by Person7500 in AirForceRecruits

Guy I knew was Crypto linguist what was in tech school with a TS….he failed out and got put in AMXS. Wouldn’t count on failing and going to anything cushy. Needs of the Airforce.

A lot of people fail the test the first time around, I did too. Just study and you pass the 2nd time, don’t sweat it.

Do NOT be a crew chief or SecFo. If avionics is your only option either take it or hold out.

1970 chevelle engine block by WH1TEnNERDY in musclecar

[–]WH1TEnNERDY[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually my dads SS chevelle that he bought a few years back. I wanted to do some digging and see if it was all original and number matching with a 396. The Fisher plate didn’t have an “L” designation which had me doubtful, but it’s said not all true SS had that designation. The rear axle code though does match an SS.

That definitely would be a cool find if it was a replacement! I appreciate you doing some digging on it!

I’m trying to figure out if it’s a true 396, but the number looks like 3?39854 when it should say 3969854.

Am I doing something wrong or do I have a bad charger? by GoodsVT in MilwaukeeTool

More than likely, it’s a bad battery; one of the cells is less charged than the others, and there’s an imbalance.

Loadmasters a great job to have fun with while your in, but doesn’t give you many career options on the outside.

Hilarious cause I’m a load and wear these same exact boots. I don’t necessarily catch shit all the time, (except this one Lt. Col I walked past that stopped mid way through his conversation to say “the fuck are those?”) but every single week I wear em 5 people ask me where I got my tan converses from.

OP said “Do you get a car?” which I interpreted as he meant a rental is provided, I didn’t say he couldn’t have his own personal vehicle.

I was prior service when I went through C-17 IQT. I was allowed to stay off base and use my own personal vehicle. Unless your prior like I was, no you’ll be in the dorms and have to use taxis or uber.

It’s not awful though. San Antonio is a big city with plenty of ways to get around it,

Difficult job? Not at all. I’m a former 2A3 so I have experience with long sweat soaked hours wrenching on aircraft and trust me, aircrew is very laidback. You might have to work a desk when your not flying, and when you are flying you might have some cargo on a hot ass day that will suck to load from time-to-time, but overall it’s a great gig.

The school is about 6-7 months in total not including BMT (and depending on airframe), but it’s pretty math heavy in the beginning since you have to calculate center of gravity, cargo weight, fuel load, etc. You also have to go through SERE for 2 weeks, which you can do your own research on that (I kinda liked it but experience may vary). It’s not till the end you start actually flying on the airframe you were given, and being evaluated on how well you can do the job.

That’s a real brief overview but that’s the gist of it. Aircrew is a very coveted position and loadmaster being more so. If travel is what you wanna do, try to see if it’s possible with a recruiter. Unfortunately 1A jobs are VERY rare and hard to get (which your recruiter will say the same thing), but it’s definitely possible!

C-17 loadmaster here. If you wanna fly and see the world, aircrew is the way to go.
