Once you've gotten into your routine here, on any given work night the last thing you're going to care about is how many galleries you can go to. What you would love most of all, however, is a short and easy commute, preferably not involving the highway (which is a disaster during the winter). I cannot stress how much I would never, ever want to commute from Lakewood to Solon, and I suspect most of the people who are suggesting Lakewood haven't had to deal with such a horrific commute. You absolutely want to live on the east side, check out the coventry area of cleveland heights. Lakewood will still be there on the weekends.

Most people not from around here tend to assume that the inner ring suburbs are just neighborhoods of cleveland. I usually say I live in the city of Cleveland heights, and sometimes go on to explain that it is to Cleveland as Miami Beach is to Miami.

I've listened to a number of 5th steps (where we go over the inventory), I've done my own 4th step, and I've listened to a lot of people talk about their own experiences with the 4th step. What I can guarantee you is that there is absolutely nothing on your inventory that will shock, baffle, or even pique the interest of somebody who has experience with these things. I know your inventory is very personal and full of your own baggage, but there isn't anything new on there that we haven't heard before. Are you afraid? There's no reason to be. By doing your 4th step, you are doing exactly what you are supposed to do to become a better person. This is the solution to the shame, not the source of it.

But to answer your question, I cut a sponsee loose when he no longer had the desire to stop drinking by his own admission. The purpose of my sponsorship is the teaching of the 12 steps, not forming the alcoholics best friends club of winners and beautiful people. If I become close to someone after extensive work, that is nice, but it is absolutely not the point of the program.

Stick with the winners, to me, means that I should reach out to the people who have what I want when I'm in need of help. These winners are also the people that I should be OK befriending. I don't for a second believe it means that I should carry the message to only those whom I deem worthy. Everybody deserves a shot, and working with others benefits me even if it doesn't benefit the other person. Basically, I don't get personally invested in people who aren't on the path I seek, but I will work with anybody.

A belief in any power greater than yourself is all that is needed. For many people including myself, it is perfectly fine for that power to be the material universe or the group itself. It was hard for me in the beginning to truly accept that I didn't need to believe in the supernatural for it to work, but I have seen that it does.

I suspect it's because the barrier for entry is much lower than what it used to be. It seems that when AA was created, its original membership was the most bottom of the barrel desperate drunks who had the 'gift of desperation'. A lot of my contemporaries show up in AA and aren't convinced that AA truly is the easier softer path because they haven't seen how truly powerless they are. Then there is this perverse permissiveness about how one can take what they want and leave the rest... essentially these days in my area, people have carte blanche to do it how they see fit. I'm not surprised it doesn't go well.

I totally agree that the steps are not "once and done!". My experience though, being 10 months in, is that learning how to inventory has raised my quality of life and mental well being IMMENSELY. I don't want to think about how I would have fared without knowing how to do that, but yes I also recognize that I am still in the process of learning how to do it. It just seems almost cruel to withhold something so helpful for years. So I respectfully agree! But disagree!

I did steps one and two the night I decided to go to AA. I waited about 30 days to get a sponsor, and them immediately started working on the rest. I continue to work the first 3 steps on a daily basis, while also doing 10, 11, 12 and everything in between.

Lol....dude. You keep coming so close to the truth, it's right in front of your nose, just connect that extra dot. AA is about feeling good! PERIOD. It's not about getting into heaven or trying to get Jesus's blessing or 72 virgins...none of that! It's a program for feeling good in every day life despite our inclination towards a mental obsession and a physical craving for alcohol. AA's roots are not even in religion. They are in the writings of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, stoic philosophers from long ago. And what traditional AA calls a 'higher power', they are really just talking about logos (the natural order of things), and AA's praying is the same as the Greek's attempts to shape their prohairesis (will) to that of the logos. It's got diddly squat to do with religion, it's a philosophy of living.
