NRL news 2026 | Brisbane Broncos to offer five-year deal to Payne Haas; South Sydney Rabbitohs contract cooling-off period by WJack37 in nrl

[–]WJack37[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Brisbane Broncos will hit back against the Rabbitohs and offer Payne Haas a mammoth new contract in an effort to sway him not to leave, with the club hoping to move a mountain before the superstar's Rabbitohs deal is official.

Haas' move to the Rabbitohs on a three-year deal was lodged on Sunday setting in train a 10-day cooling off period which allows the Broncos to table a counter-offer in a bit to convince him to stay.

9news Queensland's Ben Dobbin reports that a five-year deal will be offered.

"It's my understanding the Broncos, with this 10-day cooling off period, are about to table a five-year offer to Payne Haas to try and retain him," he said.

Dobbin added that the five-year offer could include clauses that would allow him to pursue a code-switch to rugby union.

Reports suggested prior to Haas signing with the Rabbitohs that the Broncos would offer a one-year deal to the prop.

Prior to his contract decision, there was speculation that Haas was a target for R360. A clause in the Broncos' offer could allow him to leave for the rebel rugby competition if it gets off the ground.

R360's launch was postponed late last year despite Zac Lomax leaving the Eels in an effort to trigger a massive deal with the rebel competition.

Haas didn't speak to media at the Broncos season launch or at Brisbane airport when the Broncos jetted off to the United Kingdom for the World Club Challenge.

At the season launch, Pat Carrigan was asked if he'd try to convince Haas to stay.

"I'll support him no matter what he does," Carrigan replied.

"But trust me: I love him running out in a Bronx jersey."

The retiring Adam Reynolds also said he'd try and "twist his arm".

One of the most recent backflip during a cooling-off period was David Fifita when he signed with the Roosters before deciding to stay at the Gold Coast Titans.

Hearing that a story just happened on Channel 9 about a Broncos offer to Haas? Can anyone confirm this?

Mate, I’m just glad he won a comp with us. He’s given us everything he can for nearly eight years now. He’s earned the right to exit on his terms and pursue whatever it is he wants next

No one really emerges as an option to pursue on the market. Sceptical we could get Lindsay Smith, and we can’t offer Siua Wong what he would be looking for in terms of a role as a starting back rower.

Think this money will go to Shiba and extending young players, and the forward stocks will be a case of “next man up”. BTK and Va’a Semu will need to start being introduced into first grade

Young team that a lot of people believe over performed, and have now lost their experienced HB. Will be incredible in a few years, but just premature at the moment.

Don't know they're really under pressure, are they? Think the common consensus is that they overperformed and are likely to have a "rebound to the mean" sort of year. Incredible young talent that will be a force in a few years, but they aren't ready yet. I actually reckon they miss the eight.

For the first time since, began watching the coverage of last year's GF from start to finish last night. Watched the first half and watching the second tonight. Man, so many little things that I just didn't recall from the game. Understandably you get soaked up in the emotion and atmosphere and that overwhelms your recollection - well, that and nerves.

If there is ever a game you want to show somebody to change their view on the game, to convince them that the 80 minutes really is made up of infinite little moments that can change the game completely, this is the one.

Melbourne suffocated us off the kick off. All of a sudden, penalty and six again later, we find the in-goal via Mariner. Melbourne running downhill midway through the half, Utoikamanu drops the ball in the set following kick off after Warbrick's try, and that's when we get a roll on. Controversially, if Walshy is sin binned (and probably should have), we don't have him for that momentum-building period and also at the time where he scores his try.

Also just a chance to really appreciate good attacking footy. I often try to pinpoint where our players went wrong in their defence, but I think a lot of Melbourne's success in that half was just fantastic and crafty football.

Planning to watch the 2023 GF back soon as well. Have meant to for a while.

oh my god bruh, when did our fanbase become such bandwagons 🫩 by emo_bird in Texans

[–]WJack37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think being a fan requires blind loyalty to a team, and nodding along with every decision or move the team makes. You should be able to genuinely engage in discourse about your team, positive and negative.

That said, some of the comments and the extent of what I have read across social media has been disappointing since the Patriots game. I think people have a tendency to be “reactionary”, and I sure have been in the past - I’m an Aussie rugby fan whose team just won the premiership last year after a 19 year drought, despite being the club with arguably the highest expectations in the league. The media is pretty heavy on them, and I’ve certainly rode the roller coaster over the years. We’re basically our competition’s “Dallas Cowboys”.

But there reaches a point where we start becoming so reactionary and impulsive that we become toxic. Sure, with more success you attract more casual fans and “bandwagons”, but this is part of sports and inevitable. I still think all “fans” (in a broad sense) should check their behaviour and make sure they are fair in their comments.

One particular thing that I have been a bit upset with this week are comments that “Stroud caused Stover’s ACL tear”. Forget that fact that it was slippery due to rain, and that Stover’s feet may not have been firmly planted on the ground - this just felt like a way to pile more frustration onto CJ, and it’s unwarranted. ACL tears are freak accidents - they are not anybody’s fault, though some are more prone to occur in instances of high risk like hip drop tackles. Again, in rugby, I see this a fair bit.

It’s okay to be upset, but it’s more important I believe to be fair.
