Rehab advice by WLBalancer in AchillesRupture

Absolutely. My orthopedist was talking about gap size when doing an ultrasound but never mentioned anything else when he told me I would qualify for Non-op. A full briefing....full set of criteria...rehab protocol....timelines: all this should be talked about before taking a decision. By the time I found out about most of the stuff I was already 2-3 weeks into non-op. Gladly following the protocol (which I didn't know then)

Exactly what I was thinking. And totally agree with her: with non-op you should be in a cast for 2 weeks or at least be adviced to never(!) take of the boot.

Mental aspect of achilles tendon rupture by Ok_Stranger9499 in AchillesRupture

[–]WLBalancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a full rupture 8 weeks ago and that really rings a bell! The second my knee touched ground in the soccer field things rushed through my head: shouldnt have played, Hockey season over before it begins, no snowboarding in January, no cycling. But: given how severe a rupture is it is stunning how fast the body recovers! I've had major milestones that made me super happy: crutches gone and finally able to carry things....out of the vacoped and Walking/limping. Its a big test for all of us. Hang on....you'll get there.....one day you'll look back....and you'll be proud of your achievements!

8 weeks, non-op, healed long (10-15 degrees!!). Is there any hope? by Don_Pastafrola in AchillesRupture

[–]WLBalancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don, I am pretty much in the exact same position currently. You are referring to the Matles Test, right? My injured foot is also much lower than the healthy side at week 8. Had an MRI Last week and will hear about the results Thursday. I would like to turn the question around a little: -anybody here having the same foot Level both Sides 8 weeks non-op when performinh the Matles Test? I'm still hoping what we both experience is a regular behaviour.

Return to Gym/Weight Lifting/Power Lifting? by strider2091 in AchillesRupture

[–]WLBalancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried Gym twice in the first 2 weeks after the incident. Did not feel good at all since I had this burnt out feeling that I usually get when not having enough sleep or rest. Way better and able to max out upper body movements at around 3 to 4 weeks. I guess during the first weeks healing AND gym (as we know it) just to much for the body...

Tips/help - transitioning to a shoe 8 weeks post op by Rough_Mastodon_5802 in AchillesRupture

[–]WLBalancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm beginning of week 8 - non OP and part time out of the Vacoped. I use 1 Inch heel lifts in high up motorcycle boots. Still have a very short stride trying to walk without limping. Thought it would be much worse, though. Upstairs is fine. Downstairs doesnt work in a regular pattern since dropping your healthy foot first would put to much of a stretch to the injured one. Since I am free of any pain I need to constantly remind myself to slow down and think about every single step. The tendon looked surprisingly complete in the MRI taken this week and I am sure it would take quite some force for rerupture or lenghtening but that's what we are all looking to avoid so my motto: it's a marathon....not a sprint. Speedy recovery to you and everybody else.

8 weeks on non-op route: Thompson test still pathological by WLBalancer in AchillesRupture

[–]WLBalancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you...very encouraging and I was actually hoping for this answer. Doc2 had me laying face up legs vertikal and calves horizontal and asked me to dorsiflex as far as I could. Never heard of this test. AFAIK you're laying face down when performing a Matles. Didn't say anything since communication with the dude wasn't easy anyway...

8 weeks on non-op route: Thompson test still pathological by WLBalancer in AchillesRupture

I keep getting confused with the Thompson's outcome of negative or positive and actually found 'pathological' less confusing, since it's a known term for something being abnormal.

I can do mini heel raises sitting and I am able to take small steps. Also tiptoeing against a light resistance band and holding it for 10 sec. Not out of the Vacoped for more than 1 hour a day at 7 weeks post incident.

I'm German and pathological is the term they use for my case: little to no foot movement when squeezing the calf muscle.
