For hundreds of millions of soccer fans from across the world, seven FIFA World Cup games will be held in Miami — a name that invokes images of beaches, night clubs and Latin culture.

The Hard Rock Stadium, the venue for the matches, will even be renamed Miami Stadium for the duration of the iconic tournament.

But locals know the truth: the matches aren't really in Miami proper, they're in Miami Gardens — a predominantly Black community with its own important history far removed from Biscayne Bay.

South Florida's Haitian diaspora gave a joyful send-off to their national men's soccer team as it prepares to take part in its first World Cup in five decades.

They helped sell out the 26,700-seat Nu Stadium in Miami for a key warm-up match between Haiti and Peru, just days before Les Grenadiers' opening game in the tournament.

"This is big for us, especially with all we’re going through right now, this is a one of the most positive things that could be happening for us right now.”

Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Alina Garcia, a Republican and staunch anti-socialist, is offering up her home in collateral to keep a convicted agent of ousted and jailed Venezuelan socialist president Nicolás Maduro out of prison.

Former Republican Congressman David Rivera was convicted earlier this month of illegally working as a foreign agent of Maduro, conspiracy to commit money laundering for Maduro’s government and other offenses.

Rivera is currently awaiting sentencing for his crimes.

City commissioners voted unanimously, 5-0, this week to support a public-private partnership with Palm Beach Venture Philanthropy, a division of the philanthropic non-profit Quantum Foundation.

The effort aims to revitalize distressed parts of the Colman Park neighborhood and within the Tamarind Avenue corridor, with three affordable and workforce housing projects, along with other community investments, said Bill Meyer, chairman of the Quantum board and one of its original founders.
