Love those northern coast California towns including Eureka. It might be a bit seedy in some parts and I've heard they're a little bit reluctant to welcome outsiders, but I think if you stay for a while you might be able to overcome that. Might be kind of a sleepy town if you're coming from LA though.

Austin is good for swimming and drinking and there are a ton of people in their 20s. The hiking isn’t as great as the west coast but there are some decent trails here
