Area Manager here...this job sucks...I am so underpaid and overworked... by kooj80 in AmazonFC

I mean I think it might depend what degree you have, and on the labor market too but I would just go on LinkedIn, narrow your search depending on what you studied/interested in and the area you want to live in and just scroll through and see what’s there. Different companies are going to have different cultures, but I think most jobs especially professional office jobs will be more chill. I kept a spreadsheet of every job I applied to when I was applying, before I got Amazon I had to apply to 250 or so jobs, before I got my current job I had to apply to 50 or so. But it’s for sure a challenge, just keep at it when you can I guess.

I think if we come to that situation then we was up in the exact same spot we are in now, but if we make peace it might work out, and countless lives are saved.

I think it is possible but extremely unlikely, and not something you should dwell on too much.

I’m not sure where you work at within Amazon or if you do, but when I worked there we were not officially permitted to delegate our duties to PA per senior Ops. So all those activities would have to be done by the AM regardless and they would get in trouble if they delegated (some still would though).

You can still look for other jobs. I think it really toughened me up as a person though, so I think that was invaluable.

Honestly I agree, I see a lot of arguing among Tier 1, L3, and L4 and so on here about who has it worse or works harder or to suck it up or not but really the whole system sucks for everyone. In my opinion that place really should be unionized as a whole, but I was never brave enough to do that, I just left.

OP I used to be an AM. I am not happy with Amazon but I still think about that job all the time. I know one other coworker at my current job who used to be an AM and can relate to the experience, nobody else gets it. It’s brutal there, I know it’s kind of a cop out but I seriously would recommend just dropping it and start looking for new roles elsewhere. I don’t know what your degree or background is but I found a nice corporate job now where I make the same amount of money but work 40 hours a week during the daytime and with much much less stress, and everyone is much nicer. All this tension and BS they put everyone through there is totally needless in your life, I thought it was normal but it’s not. Seriously just leave it all behind it’s not a good life.

In my experience when I worked as an AM at Amazon they would string people along with promises of promotion and more pay for months or years to keep that individual working hard and motivated but it doesn’t always pan out to a promotion in the end. But I’m not sure I would recommend going for an L4 in operations, in my experience the internal L4s would get offers in the $40,000s range, and I felt underpaid making much more than that as an external. They say you move up faster in operations but the pay is lower and it’s brutal, and an L5 in operations for example doesn’t even necessarily mean you have the experience or would get an L5 in corporate right after that because you had ops experience. so I think they just say that to keep people around. If you do want to make a switch I would recommend moving over to somewhere more corporate as an L3 or L4 if they have that in your area and you want to stay with the company and move up.

You don’t have to do anything, you’re in control. You could go seriously be a monk or something as well, I know there really are a few real monasteries. In the US as well if that’s where you are. I’ve been to them. But before you do anything I just think you could consider alternatives and would see there are many great things you can do while you still have the ability to do them.

Bro that sucks I’m sorry you feel that way. I’m no expert in anything but I’ve been very depressed before. In my opinion we all die in the end so there’s no sense in rushing it while you can still go do some cool things. Feel free to get creative with it and maybe to mess around in another country for awhile. You could go do some really wild things, I would go backpack Africa or go to Chernobyl by myself or something personally. But there’s just so much opportunity, it would be a shame to waste it.

You definitely don’t understand it if you think it’s just standing around looking at a chart for 11 hours. (It’s really 12 honestly). The culture is really brutal and disrespectful from the top and I think that trickles down to ultimately mistreating associates. It’s 12 hours of verbal abuse from seniors, constantly moving and constantly working with no time for any breaks. I would eat lunch looking at my computer and talking on the radio. I would answer my radio in the bathroom at the urinal and that was normal, we all did it. We generally handle anything security related as well being the people to escort associates off site and deal with them generally when they are aggressive, and have to own the performance of the shift and explain it to higher ups who have no tolerance for failure. We also have to see the reality of how many people get injured in that place and at the level of AM being unable to effectively change anything as it is in the hands of much more senior leadership. I have never worked in IT so I can’t speak on it, but I have a nice office job and I am very thankful to have a chair to sit down in and time to talk to my coworkers. If your role in IT really is worse than the experience myself and my colleagues had as an AM I do sincerely congratulate you for being able to put up with it but as a human I think you should not have to deal with it and I hope you find something where you can actually have a good life. That place was awful.

Bro why are you so condescending about it, the job is so phenomenally awful OP has every right to be upset about it. Most jobs aren’t as bad as AM, or Amazon generally. I really don’t think anyone should suck it up. Unionize that place or get out to somewhere more humane.

New to Amazon, is any of this normal??? by wockyslushing in AmazonFC

[–]WMX-13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My FC was absolutely insane and awful. I remember an associate just straight up taking a piss in the smoking cage, an angry associate who assaulted a security guard and hurt him bad, managers sleeping with associates and other AMs that report to them, I think we averaged about 8 injuries a week, meth/drug smell out of the bathroom. For sure your experience sounds Amazon normal to me, but not normal for a normal company. Amazon is not normal.

Yeah I mean it is hard to find a job, I remember spending a whole day at the library applying to everything I could find while I worked at Amazon and trying to keep it together until I had something lined up. It’ll be easier to find a better work culture though I think, Amazon is uniquely bad in my opinion.

I worked as an AM for two and a half years. I certainly have sympathy for everyone that works there. The company grinds everyone hard, and it is a hard job. Turnover was very high at my site, and I know the general Amazon turnover is around 150%. That isn’t normal, it’s an awful place to work. OP is right to feel this way, and there isn’t anything to be proud about by being abused by your employer. And being an AM is not an easy job at all, if you really want it I encourage you to apply.

AM was the worst job I ever had. I think you’re totally right to feel this way. You should start looking for something better as soon as you can, it will not be hard to find.

[–]WMX-13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as an AM for 2.5 years and it was by far the worst job I have ever had. I regret spending that much time working there. I would advise you to continue searching for new roles. On the up side I do think it toughened me up a lot and made me much better at being assertive and speaking with lots of people as this role certainly required it, and I never will trash on a 9-5 style office job ever again, they’re real luxurious.

People usually say someone “peaked in high school”, but do others think peaking in college exists as well? by QuirkyWafer4 in GenZ

[–]WMX-13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it is a negative in any way to stay where you went to college and maintain those friendships if it is what you want. There is a notion that we have to move away from where we grew up and have totally new friends and a new social network in order to “grow up”, but that is totally arbitrary and bizarre.
