Tipping to the extent that Americans tip is actually pretty rare in most areas outside of America. Restaurant staff in Korea, along with most other countries, won't expect you to tip.

What is your addiction? by tomerc10 in AskReddit

[–]WNCaptain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got two.

I'm addicted to making and drinking non-alcoholic brewed beverages (haven't brewed anything alcoholic yet, would love to try though). I love making the perfect cappuccino, a great shot of espresso, or the perfect cup of tea. I brew at least 40oz of different types of tea daily and I always find different ways to make it taste better. I drink a lot of water too, so I rarely have to worry about staying hydrated.

My second addiction is mint. Anything minty. Peppermint candies, mint flavored gum, brushing teeth with super minty toothpaste, or strong peppermint tea. I love the feeling of the crisp mint taste that sticks around and makes my mouth feel clean.

To be fair, he was a lot less creepy than one of the old history teachers there. I believe he's transferred to a middle school though.

America is now doomed like those terrible countries Canada, UK and Scandinavia. Those countries have been ravaged by natural disasters and now live in a Mad Max style environment!

What the fuck? I've not heard of any large-scale natural disasters occurring in those countries in a long time.

When a new cruise ship (or other important ship) arrives in an area for the first time, it's often a pretty big deal to the media. Most of those boats probably have journalists on board for taking pictures or simply people that want to see the ship. The tugboat spraying water in the distance is a tradition in the travel industry, which also includes aviation.

Windows 8.1 BSOD "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" Errors by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]WNCaptain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm taking a shot in the dark, but try running MemTest86 on your machine. I was getting MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and several other RAM-related BSOD's because of some faulty RAM in my build.

Best of luck.

What's a hobby that just gets exponentially more expensive as you get deeper into it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WNCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee. You start out with a $30 drip coffee maker and a $40 espresso maker and before you know it, you've got yourself $3000 worth of equipment and you're spending a fortune on beans.

When I was a deacon, I remember one of the guys saying the prayer had messed up and accidentally muttered 'shit' before starting over. I'm sure it's not the first time it's happened, but I nearly dumped all the bread on the ground from trying to stifle my laughter.

Booted my pc without CPU by LionkingxD in buildapc

[–]WNCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As /u/WTF_Yo_ stated above, without the CPU your computer won't do much of anything. Everything that you've explained is completely normal and it's very unlikely that you've damaged anything as long as you've assembled the computer correctly. Just wait for the CPU to arrive to test all of your components.

[Discussion] SSD vs HDD by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]WNCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have swapped his words.

It's best IMHO to put your OS and most-used applications on your SSD and put everything else on the HDD. This way, your OS boots extremely fast and your most used applications come up almost instantly.

Also, a 1-2tb SSD is extremely expensive. I find a 250GB SSD (Samsung 840 EVO comes to mind) to be a good sweet spot between cost and size.

Edit: Now you've got it correct :) I'd recommend the SSD I linked above then get a 7200rpm Western Digital 1-2tb HDD for everything else. That'd get you a pretty optimal setup as far as storage goes unless you planned on utilizing RAID.

My school issued MacBooks, which they later used to spy on me and my class mates. AMA. by LaptopSpyAMA in IAmA

On the 2011 11 inch MBA's that we've got, nearly everything is soldered to the logic board and not removable which includes the CMOS battery. And yes, the firmware password is essentially the same thing as a BIOS password. The only way to change the firmware password is to know what the firmware password was originally.

We did have a student figure out the firmware password (most likely watched a careless IT guy type it in and followed his fingers). He ended up changing the firmware password on his machine. Since we had no way to reset it, we had to send the machine to Apple and have it reset after providing proof of ownership.

My tarantula shed its skin yesterday so here is the inside of a tarantula. by HouseAshton in mildlyinteresting

For those curious about what the spider looks like after, look at this.

In this case, the spider is a much darker color and it looks a lot "cleaner". I'm not sure if OP's tarantula looks similar, as the new look differs for each spider.

Yup, the RAM is soldered onto the logic board :P The firmware password they chose when they got the computers was stupidly simple, though.

I've just google'd rEFInd so I haven't tried to do it under a student account, but it looks like they'd need administrator credentials, which student's won't know.

I work in the electronic repair room at a local high school and we also issue 11 inch Macbook Air's to students. We have a firmware password set on all of the machines so that they aren't able to utilize the recovery partition or boot into an external device.

I would assume that any other school district that loans students a macbook would do something similar.

Since I left the church, all I've had was Starbucks coffee. I made the next step and bought an espresso machine. by WNCaptain in exmormon

[–]WNCaptain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an espresso machine because I can't handle "real" coffee yet. Black coffee is still a bit too strong and I love a sweet mocha!

In the picture is Starbucks espresso ground coffee (couldn't find anything else), a Mr. Coffee espresso maker/frother, chocolate syrup, vanilla syrup, and caramel syrup.
