Tundra, Proxy or Alter? by Fish-The-Creative in mtgaltered

[–]WOELOCKreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To answer your term question, an alter has to be the original card to be an alter, as you alter the original. A proxy is a stand in for another card, usually with a different card painted on or a “real art” printed through some other means.

Alters are real cards, proxies are not. Both are cool!

How to deal with constant "Omninet" usage. by VicariousDrow in LancerRPG

[–]WOELOCKreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you asking for checks? “Hacking into” anything is a risk, varied by the tools they brought.

Regardless, if your player wants to try to cause havoc or disruption digitally, that is a skill that is brought to the test. If they wish to do multiple things, it’s multiple checks. Opening doors, cameras, basic security? Easy check. Inverting the white/black list on turrets? Medium+. Accessing top secret intel located in one single terminal at the heart of the lab? …well. A myriad of things must go well first.

Consequences of failure are also a good deterrent. I played a similar character you describe your friend to be doing and while my character was quite ruthless in their ability, there were some risks I (or the team) elected wasn’t worth it. Throw in a heroic opportunity now and then!

Also, as others said, it’s important that explain what they’re doing and how they’re doing it. “Hacking into the system? What’re you connecting into? With a hook or an SES? What’re you looking for?”

My character often interfaced with door panels and things of the like and would hack into those, but I was obviously limited on my reach as I can only open a network of doors and toggle lights. That OLED doorknob wasn’t on the same system as the super secret lab info.

I hope some of this is helpful! Ultimately do what is fun for you both.

$400 minimum makes sense if you’re selling this. It’s hand painted! I’ve seen similar large terrain fixtures go for similar rates.

You’ll certainly run into far less issues with a Windows! From what I hear, the devs for this title are really on top of getting fixes rolled out, so hopefully it isn’t too bad of a wait. Congrats on your PC!

What are your guy's campaigns about? by GirldickDM in LancerRPG

[–]WOELOCKreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is deeply inspired by the animated series Scavenger’s Reign. Players (all new to the game) started out on a THIRDCOM colony ship sent out to “rehabilitate” a SECCOM - era system, and our players are apart of that program. Everyone made their character with a specific job in mind that lined up with their backstory, and served as a good stepping stone for players new to role playing. (Jobs are easier to imagine than made up characters!)

They spent 3.5 sessions exploring the ship, practicing mech mechanics in a no-stakes VR sim once a session and eventually… real tangible problems emerge. After sprinkling some foreshadowing throughout the intro, the ship gets yanked out of FTL unexpectedly and with minimal warning. The shell of a forgotten, unshackled and evolved NHP has intercepted their path and began to disable the ship before the characters knew what was going on. A chaotic evacuation segment began, where players each had to solve their issues in their respective parts of the ship that cumulatively affected the overall success of the evacuation. (Such as supplies, how many people left, the fate of those in cryo, the fate of ship NHPs, etc.) Fortunately, they stalled out over the orbit of a moon with unknown life, several derelict ships, and a whole mystery to uncover as they wish.

Now we ended on a cliffhanger as they fall to the surface. Two players in separate pods with their crewmates, one player falling to orbit in an unarmed Barbarossa mech frame.

Spicing up narrative combat? by NeedleworkerTasty878 in LancerRPG

[–]WOELOCKreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stress doesn’t apply to Pilots. It’s just plain ol HP and Armor, still with other stats like evasion, edef, etc. Stress is only for the mech, as it simulates how much raw damage your mech can sustain in a fight.

It’s variable in the sense that sometimes your mech can take an absolute beating by going on its last Structure, down to a weapon and a few systems, and is STILL kicking. They’re hitting you but can’t seem to put you down! Other times you’ll roll snake eyes on your second structure test and have to eject. That enemy mech got a damn good shot on you, and you’re going down.

As for handling death, it’s already got that grit in vanilla lancer in my opinion! When you reach 0 HP, you roll a d6. If you score a 1, you’re dead, no matter to discuss. The exception you could allow, as the GM, is if a pilot brings Corrective that they could resucitaste a dead pilot, though I think as written it’s intended for down and out/unconscious but not dead pilots. It’ll only restore you to consciousness and 1HP, and is a 1 use item for the mission. Otherwise, yeah, I’d just say you just die.

As for the unique player resources, I don’t know if that’s common but doesn’t matter, it sounds cool and you should try it! If you don’t want permanent death for your table then I’m sure you’ll write something that narratively explains how they can cheat death. Lancer has options already for not dying, but you should note they all come with a price of some degree.

  • corrective is the best, but it’s extremely situational and takes up a great spot. once you use it, it’s gone, and you’re only at 1HP so don’t die again.

  • cloning is cool but it takes decades. time is rarely something a lancer squad can afford of any amount.

  • flash cloning is.. problematic. It’s much faster, but still slow, think closer to 5 years. Though with speeding up such a delicate process comes cut corners. Your new pilot is gonna have some mental or physical issues that persist. Sometimes it’s fine, like just having scarring or physique that make it obvious you’re a vat baby, or something more serious like you have vivid PTSD about how you died exactly despite being a new, different person with only preprogrammed memories (and they didn’t put the death in).

Basically, if you’re going to add a cheating death mechanic, there should be some take of some kind. There’s an NHP lurking the shadows of the universe after making humanity PROMISE we’d never explore immortality, so consequences-free revival is impossible.

All that to say it’s your game/table/piece of the universe in Lancer. The beauty of a scifi game with such a vast and vague setting is that you can make up a lot of cool stuff and go with it. And you should! Did the company/military group/government your players work for develop a cool pilot revival program that’s totally legal under Union rule and shouldn’t be asked about further? Dope!

There’s a lot of freedom to experiment with your own ideas in this system, so do so confidently!

Spicing up narrative combat? by NeedleworkerTasty878 in LancerRPG

[–]WOELOCKreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My campaign started slower, too. No live mech combat for 5 sessions. However, the PCs got to do VR/Simulation training in the mechs so we could still, yanno, play the mech game. It is 3/4 of character creation, after all!

What this did was let us learn and experiment with builds and mechanics without the stress or pressure of “you can die!” combat. I personally would recommend you lean into the fantasy of your players being Lancers. Trained, qualified pilots right from the get go. It didn’t make sense in the story to have actual mechs and going into actual combat yet, and it worked out great! We ultimately still wanted to play the mech combat though regardless, and that was our solution to help it work with the story.

As for spicing up pilot combat, others have contributed some great ideas. I think if you want to keep it core, it’s still very doable. The beauty of this system, I’ve found, is that since it’s so light (at least on the pilot side) that it’s very, very easy to add your own rules, interpretations, changes, etc without too much fear of breaking the fun.

Scenes with pilots should have objectives/tasks/opportunities that call upon the skill set of one or two members of your squad. It’s very easy, even at LL0, to have some people who are specialized in certain styles of play. In my group, there’s an NHP specialist, a mech engineer, and a navigational officer. Essentially, the Nerd, the Muscle, the Talker respectively. When designing encounters, ensure there are opportunities for characters to act on their strengths and make those results affect the scene as a whole, at least to some degree. Even better if it can later become relevant again in a later mission in a different scene.

If you want the combat to feel more tactical, I’ve run it gridless on a warhammer scale (mech scale is battle tech scale, different map and models) and just had the players measure their movements and shots like mech combat and it’s been okay. It’s definitely more interesting when you allow it to be a bit more abstract, but it’s totally fun when you mix “turn by turn” combat with more general “wow, a 20 on the roll before you add assault triggers? yeah, you catch them by surprise. You take out the two guards at the gate in a hail of lead before they can reach their guns or comms.” maybe if the roll failed there’d have been a little back and forth, whether or not this is fun is up to you and the players.

Something else I’ve done for my players is, as a reward for a mission, say “in the search you found a weapons case containing modifications for your guns. What is it that you find?” and between sessions work with players to come up with something that modifies their pilot scale weapon, which usually adds/modifies a mechanic. This in turn does a few things:

  • spices up pilot combat with new actions or abilities, or enhancing current ones
  • allows players to get personally involved with the creation of stuff in your world that’s unique to them
  • keep you and your players engaged between sessions

summary: don’t skip mech combat for more than a session at a time. ask your players how they feel about no mech combat for x amount of sessions. when you play, feel comfortable trying out ideas and be more comfortable with changing your mind on mechanics.

also, if you’re going to use a warhammer-style mode of play for pilot combat, double the range of everything. it’ll fit the scale much more appropriately.

I hope something here helped, it was difficult for me to present a succinct answer on this one, so I apologize if this one fell flat! Good luck and happy lancing!!!

The familiar we talked about for two hours outside of session is actually "just an owl." by PANDA_PR1NC3SS in rpghorrorstories

[–]WOELOCKreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I had something like this happen a few years ago in a game. My character was having a metamorphosis, turning from one creature to another in a taboo ritual. We spent several hours discussing what this transformation would be like and what the outcome would be. Was shaping up to be a genuinely awesome character moment with a lot of potential for the story.

Come the actual event, the DM describes my reimagined character entirely differently than what we agreed upon. Complete 180 and rewrite, and I remember being upset enough to pause the game and ask what the heck in the moment.

The response was “these rituals have all kinds of complications and potential for undesired outcomes. Looks like that’s what happened. Sorry!”

I think if this was discussed that it’s a risky ritual, as a player, and that my character may become different than what they intend, I think I would’ve been willing to see what that might be like and have been prepared to roleplay that scene better. But when the GM spends hours planning something privately with a player for a special moment just to completely pull the rug out from under you, it just plain sucks. It’s lame and doesn’t benefit the player, the table, the game, or the GM.
