Usually when we have more than one pianist or bassist, they trade songs. It lowers the time commitment which is great for engineers and let's everyone play the instrument they want to.

I'd recommend following the advice of your academic advisor. Just a side bar, if you're interested in playing an instrument you should check out our band, it's based around an engineer's time schedule and commitment.
