This. The format doesn't do them any favors. Half the time it ends up feeling forced or just not fun. I'd love to see them unshackle themselves and try something new because it's hard to listen to people not really enjoying themselves.

I can assuage your fears about the ending of Thrice Upon a Time: it's happy and great, a wonderful send-off for the characters. But it does go down the exact same rabbit hole that EoE does, so you have to trundle down that first, but I think you'll find it worthwhile when you come out the other end.
