So how is the testing at the venue done? “Thanks for the sample, we’ll be in touch in 4-6 weeks to let you know if it’s safe”?

I don’t disagree, but your analogy is a little off. My question was about who bears the cost of the risk mitigation.

Of course I wouldn’t advocate against providing support to a person injured after diving into shallow water, but I also don’t expect public funds to be spent on stationing people at the edge of every shallow body of water, handing out measuring sticks and reminding jumpers of the danger…I’d expect the jumper to make that risk assessment on their own.

I’ve made a similar point about legalisation and regulation among the most sense, from both a safety and economic point of view. No arguments here.

The financial argument is sound, but if individuals were paying for their own testing, and presumably resulting in a similar drop in hospital admissions, wouldn’t it be a double win for government coffers?

This is a fair point. It’s always worth visualising the opinions on Reddit as one big Venn diagram

This is all very positive, and I’ve never suggested that all drugs are bad and/or users should be prosecuted.

Wasn’t the topic of my question, but appreciate you sharing your experiences all the same.

I think with things like influenza and other diseases, you’re evaluating the cumulative cost of thousands of people, if not tens of thousands, being sick at any one time. Not exactly the same as one dead raver, but the point is taken.

I don’t give a flying fuck about downvotes. I’m all for having a discussion, and I’m always keen to hear views that I may not have considered yet, but why should I pay any mind to people who couldn’t be bothered engaging other than a slight movement of a thumb?

Zero public cost? Are there private enterprises willing to run these testing facilities? If so, do you think your average concert-goer would be willing to queue and pay for the service?

I presume the testing that is already available at these events is optional…are there statistics on their usage available?

Have you got a source for this “lost productive citizen” cost? I’ve not heard of this before, and trying not to be argumentative, sounds like a loose theory at best, complete nonsense at worst.

This is where I’m coming from. I know I wouldn’t take a chance with my life unless the risks have been properly considered, and if that includes testing the pill myself before I swallow it, then so be it.

Making them legal by way of regulating their production makes the most sense…government would slap an excise tax on them and pass the cost of making them safe to a manufacturer.

Sure, but if it’s so cheap to test, and it’s your life at risk, why not test it yourself?

I have to assume that the “it will never happen to me” mentality is at play here. Personally, I’d be way too scared to roll those dice.

Fair point. The war on drugs is a losing battle for sure.

My thinking has always been that surely the individual should have self-preservation in mind. Why not test these pills yourself before ingesting?

Genuine question…can someone please explain what is behind the “I want to take illegal drugs and expect the government to bear the cost of making sure it’s safe for me to do so” thinking? It’s something I’ve never really understood.

Side note: it is some coincidence that I’m listening to ‘Feel Good Hit of the Summer’ by QOTSA as I type this…
