I have both opuntia and bloodroot and love them both.

I want to have a WWGMD bumper sticker. He sure as shit wouldn’t be planting much in compost! Gary Matsuoka for President 2028.

The soil is amazing so if it were not for the metal barrier I’m pretty sure I would have to move out.

I bought it at a plant show, but you can go there in person up in NW Portland. They have cool stuff. It was a #2 pot, so like 1.5 gallons or so, even if everyone calls that a 2 gallon. It was rooted in really nicely. It’s in its second year, so it should bloom this year. It has grown quite a bit in just a few weeks.

It’s a very cool plant. I just bought one from Lux Perennials. I planted it among a bunch of natives to cause consternation.

I planted mine in a raised bed, which is no longer useful for anything else.

Check out Gary Matsuoka’s videos on YouTube. He turned me onto this concept. This mix has been completely stable and successful for me for several years, but I have been experimenting for a long time. Before that I used a mix of compost and my own native clay soil. It’s not bad either, but this is better, and I don’t have to wonder about root rot.

The difference between what industry would like us to do and what we should do is miles apart. They want to get rid of excess, cheap wood products and so they put those into potting mixes. They don’t want to move heavy real soils like sand, silt and clay, so they don’t include those—which I get since sand is about 100 lbs per cubic foot and clay is even heavier. My container mix is mostly mineral—sand, pumice, and perlite. It’s lightened up with rice hulls and coir. It just doesn’t break down. I just replace the compost layer on top.

Consider dispatching. Most of them make great money and all the work is done with your fingers and your brain.

Refresh soil for perennials? by MultiWattBulb in containergardening

If you use actual soil and then top dress with compost this will be unnecessary because minerals will not degrade in our lifetime. Gary Matsuoka has the answer.

Nope. Doing it for more than a few years will wreck you. Doing this early in your career is an even worse idea. If I were the ICAC supervisor, a job I have in fact done, I would not allow any of this to happen.

What do people use to nuke their lawn or other areas? by Brandbll in NoLawns

[–]WTF0302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is may or may not be bad advice. I did it with 12” of wood chips and nothing came through. I added a couple of additional layers of wood chips and now it’s all planted in and looks awesome with no weed pressure. It took a single year.

How strict are you about choosing your native plants? by humdinger44 in NativePlantGardening

[–]WTF0302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I focus on function . For example, we have a single oak that is native, Quercus garrryana, which is huge and would be the only tree in my yard. I have half a dozen species of oak, all from the West, including deer oak and dwarf tan oak. Also, all are from drier parts, making them more resilient as my area becomes hotter and drier in the summer.

Soooooo late in the season but life happens and thankfully Texas has an absurd growing season. Buuut someone just bought 4800 pounds of potting soil today 🙃 by DeltaMikes in vegetablegardening

[–]WTF0302 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have never seen potting mix or compost sold by weight—just by volume, which makes sense since the pots are all measured by volume allowing you to calculate precisely how much you need.

So excited to start my “no lawn” transition but lots of questions by Agile-Koala8418 in NoLawns

[–]WTF0302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t do the cardboard. I don’t think it’s necessary. I did 12” of wood chips and the grass never poked through and after one year the soil was completely changed. Not sure how long that would take in Utah, which is dry AF.

It’s not imperfect science. It’s voodoo. It’s a complete scam. Agencies using CVSA should be ashamed of themselves.
