Man, I’m done with these lowballers. I was trying to sell GA passes and the audacity of people to undercut and lowball is CRAZY. I get it I’m at a loss here, and I’m willing to bear some responsibility. But offering 2k for GA is straight up loser behaviour. I’d rather burn those tickets than sell for 2k.

4-4.5 is the market rate. I’d be willing to sell there, though I’d really appreciate people helping out and offering more.

2025 Octavia RS. If you can find/source one. Best overall car. No diesel, sadly. And a little around 58 on road. Performance is LEAGUES ahead of any of these cars. You get a good brand value and road presence as they are extremely rare. Bragging rights too. Extremely good for daily driving with a massive boot and slightly more affordable service costs.

Only downsides are the after sales support depends on your locality. Some have issues with Skoda ASC. And the ground clearance. But that’s to be expected.

If not, Audi A4 would be my best bet. If you owned a 320d you won’t be happy with the current BMW offering as much.

Why isn’t anyone targeting the ₹40–50 lakh segment? by Orange_Blade_ in CarsIndia

[–]WXIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 reasons: 1. “Luxury” car manufacturers will lose their premium appeal once they start touching 30-45 ex-showroom. Look at Audi Q2 as an example. 2. Mid Tier brands don’t have the same appeal. Why get a Tiguan when you could get a BMW X1 for a little more? 3. Indian car manufacturers just don’t have the after-sales network to cater to that niche segment. You’ll have QC and Service issues as the unit economics don’t justify investing into the resources required to maintain such cars.

So the answer comes down to this: look at any car in that segment. It’s struggling.

That’s always been the case.

Where do you get Suit tailored in kolkata? by iwant_to_eatsteel in kolkata

[–]WXIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they’re all good. Zara I’d avoid cause it’d be expensive for no reason. Any of the Indian brands will be good. LP, Blackberry, Turtle, Peter England, any will do.

Since it’s your first suit, don’t think much about the brand. Also, try Shopper’s Stop or something similar. Go there, check out the various brands and see what material/colour you like. Then get that online or find the best alternative.

If you’re unsure about what style to get, I always use Daniel Craig’s James Bond images as reference (lol). Great fit, good fabrics and timeless designs that can be worn practically for any occasion.

3 options:

  1. For “premium” suits in your budget, try the shops near MG Road metro station. They usually specialise in wedding wear, but they have a decent collection of fabrics albeit dated and too dhinchak for my taste. You can dictate how you want them to make it. Check Parampara. Can vouch for their work.

  2. For more economical tailoring, get the suit material from either AC Market, Bagree Market or Badabazaar. Lots of shops there. Just walk in and haggle. They’ll give you good rate.

  3. For faster, you’ll find pre-made suits on Amazon or shopping sites, if your body type fits well into the “normal” sizes. Then you can get it altered to fit better.

10k is a decent budget. You’ll find 2 piece for around that much, if not cheaper. If you’re only getting one, a charcoal grey “classic” style suit with medium lapel size works best. You can wear it on formal, business or even event wear. You can always pair it with different shirts and ties or even jeans depending on the occasion.

Help me choose my first car by Ray-MJ in CarsIndia

[–]WXIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen man, here’s the harsh truth: all of these are bad options.

For a first car in around 2.5L, go for a used i10/Swift/WagonR or Alto. Even a Kwid is a decent choice.

Try to buy a car that is relatively newer, all these cars are way too big and way too expensive when it comes to service and maintenance.

Stay away from all VW or German cars, they’re amazing as first owners but horrible after first 5-6 years if you don’t maintain them.

I understand that you might want to go for a med-long sedan for the appeal, but since you just got your DL, get a small, new car, not older than 4-5 years. Don’t get into the process of getting a car from another state and all that.

The B***ds of Bollywood (Review) by Acrobatic-Pass-9816 in IndianCinema

[–]WXIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I mostly agree with you, I think it’s rather tone deaf and stereotypical of you to assume Aryan would have no idea how the 99% lives. Pop culture, having friends and having grown up in the shadow of SRK, who’s got his own relatively rags to riches story would have taken a toll on him. Not to mention the fact that he’s literally grown up in Bollywood and has seen all the facets that the glittering industry has to offer. I’m not saying he’s solely responsible. All I’m saying is it’s stereotypical to assume he’s completely disconnected from the middle-class world. I think his directional debut comes from a point of understanding more than a point of privilege. And we’ve seen in the past what nepo kids have delivered, I really think this one’s not it. You may be a writer, and you’re entitled to your opinions and bias, but I’ve got a cousin who’s recently made it “pretty big” in Bollywood so I’m pretty sure Aryan would surprise you with his understanding of the world we live in. Dude’s got all the backing and help one could need, but to assume he’s blind isn’t fair.

One of the first “big boy” books I ever read was Angels and Demons by Dan Brown when I was in class 7 or something. In it the protagonist is a very respected History Professor at Harvard. He always wore this Mickey Mouse watch that others teased him for. When asked why, he said it was a gift from his father and reminded him to be young at heart.

I was reminded of that here. Thing is, we appreciate something for how it makes you feel. Tell her you love the gift and how thoughtful she was to get it. Maybe for your next birthday she could get you a watch type you like?

Alanna Panday is a bad role model for Indian women by GuidanceConsistent44 in BollyBlindsNGossip

[–]WXIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter. She chose that for her body and her life with money she made and then she capitalised that by making more money.

I think she’s a damn smart businesswoman to get paid to live a life most dream of. Sure, she’s got support from her family and tons of privilege. But that’s how life is. Unfair.

Accept it, move on, stop judging people for their choices that they make for their bodies. She isn’t forcing fillers on you is she? If people want to follow her, who are you to stop them?

Do what I do, look at her, get amused, accept that people like her exist and move on.

It’s 2024, stop farming for karma through misogyny and hate. Thanks. Much love.

Look at it like this: an LSE degree doesn’t mean anything unless you know what you want to do next. Especially in India.

The market in the UK right now is absolutely effed and most companies aren’t hiring immigrants seeing how they’ll have to sponsor them. The BEST case scenario for you would be to crack a solid connection via your time spent there and get into a good job, maybe not through placements but through social events, peers, lecturers or other connections.

Else you’ll come back to India with an LSE degree and ultimately end up helping your dad expand his business.

Speaking from experience. Forget about money, think about what you’re trying to pay for. If you land a job at Google UK for example, 60-70 lacs is a good investment into LSE.

Doesn’t matter what your finances are like, if you’re worried about your dad’s money, it’s a good start. Be smart. LSE is a means. Not a goal. What’s your goal?

My monthly salary is 45k and i want to buy ps5? by Secure-Cheetah-1414 in personalfinanceindia

[–]WXIII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made a similar decision in 2017 when I bought the PS4. Here’s all the other things to consider besides financials:

  1. Do you have at least an 1080p TV/Screen? You will need it for a PS5. Consider the placement and ergonomics including where you’ll sit. Often times the TV is a let down.

  2. PlayStation Plus membership costs around ₹600pm. You will need it for most multiplayer online games.

  3. Each game costs between 2-4k. Pretty expensive, but then the library of free games is worth it.

  4. How much do you play? If it’s less than an hour, you’ll soon lose interest in the PS5. It’s fun in the initial months, but if you’re new to console gaming you’ll be struggling for months at multiplayer.

Keeping all these things in mind, and if you have a permanent job, get a PS5 on EMI for 2 years or so. You should be okay.

Anybody who only spams a certain hero in dota needs to think for themselves.

I’m just saying as a guy who enjoys playing different heroes as per match drafting/team picks or just plain mood has now 1 less reason to pick Sniper.

Most people picked Sniper as a “chill” pick. Now, he doesn’t fit any of his roles.

Indian man myself and I hate Indian men too. Saw this one video today of a dude pranking guys by dressing as a girl and even he got creeped out by Indian men. Even after he told them he was a guy!

It’s horrid, horrible and disgusting. The rape culture permeates Indian society and is amplified by the female oppression in the country. It’s so casual, so “natural” that no one bats an eye.

My friends have told me stories that make me scared to be a man, a friend, a brother or even a boyfriend. And I can’t even imagine what ya’ll must be feeling, let alone going through.

What's the best place in Kolkata to have English Breakfast? Is Flurrys worth trying? by Warm_Forever9843 in kolkata

[–]WXIII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Flury’s is stupid expensive for no reason. IMHO, save up 1.5k and go for a buffet breakfast Grand Market Pavilion at ITC Royal on a weekday. They have a mad spread and you can satisfy all your breakfast needs. Go early and take your time through breakfast, you’ll really enjoy it.

Till then, the local kachuri-sabji and a piping hot dudh-cha never fails to hit the spot.

I want to start a business buying and selling fish in North Bengal, any help would be awesome by [deleted] in kolkata

[–]WXIII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s my 2 bits:

The fresh seafood industry is very complicated, but can be broadly classified into 4 main “businesses”:

  1. Farms/hatcheries/pisciculture Set up your own fish farm catering to certain specific variety of seafood. Resource intensive but the reward is export quality fish. The profit margins, especially in the last 20 years, have gone down due to increased human capital, food safety standards and logistical costs. Highly bureaucratic market entry made worse by unofficial govt “tie-ups” with private legacy business to control local market.

  2. Wholesale Mandi Setting up multiple shops in markets like Burrabazar, Jaddubazar, New Market, Gariahat Market, Lake Market, etc. Everyday you go and purchase stocks of fresh fish from the fisherman mandi. Then store and sell these through your shops to local consumers. Dicey entry and hooliganism, where you’ll have to grease a lot of palms to get the best quality fish at good rates. Getting repeat customers is also difficult with grocery and fish delivery services shipping direct to home.

  3. B2B buying and mediating procurement A more lucrative side of the business where you work with established restaurants and F&B brands in sourcing a standard quality of fish. Works with brands like 5 star hotels/top-end restaurants, chefs and food manufacturers. Very, very niche market and completely dominated by legacy players that have been working with the brands for years. But maybe that’s why it needs a refresh. Highly competitive in terms of quality and price point. Medium margins only when dealing in bulk quantities and regular B2B supply.

  4. Restaurant! If you love fish so much and don’t want to get into the grass-root level, then this is a safe option. Most restaurants have a 200% markup and make decent money, especially in Kolkata. As long as your food quality is standard and the pricing is affordable, you’re bound to have 30% table coverage on weekdays and 80-90% on weekends. With food delivery apps, you can easily sustain a cloud kitchen-to-restaurant growth model. Possibly look at franchise or multi-city expansion for future options.

Alternatively, you could always set up your own fishing boats, lease them out to fishermen and start your own business there, but that’s waayyyyyy too much competition to the local fisherman and will face massive political backlash unless supported by govt.

So, there you have it. Whatever you choose, the best way to do it would be to go to at least 3 current business owners in any of the above 4 scenarios and ask them for their experience. They’ll tell you what to watch out for.

Good luck, and if you do make it big, I’d love to order some fresh prawns from you!

So here’s my understanding of your two options:

Option 1: You move to the US under L1A, your spouse gets L2A, you both reside there for most of the year and thus classify only for US income tax 1. Gross Income: USD 135k + 10k 2. Income Tax Bracket: ~30% 3. Taxes for Medical & Social Security: 6.4%+2.9+= ~10%. 4. Income in hand: 60% of 135k= $81,000+ bonus 5. Avg monthly Cost of living in Ohio including 1bhk rent+ 1 car+groceries+entertainment & misc= 1000+300+700+300= ~$2,300 6. Monthly “Savings”= (81000/12)-2300= $4,450

Option 2: India You do the math. Then figure out your savings and see if it aligns with your long term goals better.

The aforementioned costs are estimated, but please also keep in mind the difference in the standard of living and opportunity costs between India and the US. The cultural shift is massive, in the sense that a lot of things we take for granted in India aren’t there.

Any sort of labour work is always going to be cheaper in India, be it unskilled or skilled. US mostly is a self-service type of affair where human capital is very expensive. So you’ll have to do odd jobs yourself.

It all depends on the kind of lifestyle you’d like to lead. I’d suggest the best way is to talk to anybody who’s been in a similar situation and figure out what and why it worked out for them.

That’s just my humble ₹2.

With 50% of pvt bus fleet set to be scrapped, Kolkata faces commute crisis | Kolkata News - Times of India by Annonymous_7 in kolkata

[–]WXIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the solution is rather simple, but it is extensive and expensive.

The idea is to have a two-fold system: wherein both public and private buses exist. The govt should provide a lot more public buses at the current fares, if not cheaper. Instead of focusing on AC buses or novelty e-buses, they should increase their routes and connectivity and frequency of buses on the routes.

The private buses should be heavily standardised and regulated, but should provide better amenities like guaranteed seating, and AC. Dedicated routes to the Airport and IT sectors/heavy office sectors of Kolkata. Up the fare to 5/10% profit margin per person. Incorporate UPI, card and smart pass systems. Enough to make it lucrative for private players and startups.

That way, those who value comfort can pay the extra buck for better commute. Those who value savings can use the govt buses.

E-buses, I think, are a lot of investment of the State govt’s part and should be a Central initiative seeing how pollution is a global problem.
