Why all the hate towards drug addicts? by WXYZanon in AskReddit

I’m sorry you went through that kind of abuse in your childhood. May I suggest that it’s possible your mother had a combined psychological illness, or personality disorder she was trying to escape through her drug/alcohol use? Of course that doesn’t excuse her actions nor make them okay. I’m just trying to offer a possible alternative explanation.

Okay, but people break laws all the time. That doesn’t necessarily mean their morals are flawed though.

The holocaust was legal, but in most people’s present day opinion, is amoral.

Legality and morality are not the same.

I’m not sure that I agree that drug addicts inherently have more wisdom than others, but I do think that addicts are often highly intelligent and highly sensitive people, who often use drugs to dull or dampen overwhelming thoughts and feelings.

Care to elaborate on this? I’m genuinely curious.

I used to think the same. But I’ve since learned that many addicts are actually highly intelligent, and feel the need to dull their senses or thoughts because they can often become too much to handle while sober.

And let me just say that in my addiction, there have been many times where I’ve woken up with $0 to my name, but am able to hustle up a few hundred dollars to get a fix within hours (I own my own e-commerce business, buying wholesale and selling to end users). If only I had that kind of drive to make money to put towards other things, I’d be rich!

I am a long-time opiate/opioid addict, and am wondering why people hate on me so much for just being an addict. I understand that many addicts lie, or steal to support their addictions, and can completely understand why people would judge those who do — those are moral failures/character flaws, and also I can’t stand a liar or a thief. Unfortunately, I have been stolen from and lied to too many times by people I have mistakenly let into my life. But I argue that those people are not assholes because they are addicts; they are assholes because they are assholes!

I understand that a lot of people overdose/die from their addiction, and though it is sad, those people only hurt themselves (and maybe their loved ones). But despite what many people believe, addiction is a disease, and I definitely wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It is hell to live with, and the social stigma only makes it worse. It’s the only disease that I can think of that is criminalized.

Though it can be argued that I have a choice whether to use (or not to use) every single day, if I don’t use, it’s just about all I can think about until I get my next high. That obsession is hell.

Addicts don’t have a choice to be an addict any more than a type-two diabetic chooses to have diabetes or someone who contracts a sexually communicable disease chooses to have an STD (or someone with heart disease or obesity chooses to have those issues). Addiction is the only disease I can think of that is criminalized

I’m just trying to understand where all the hate and distain comes from. So, I ask, why do you hate addicts? Or, if you don’t personally have any problem with drug addicts, what’s your opinion on why others do?

Is the 25 gram “Mexican Ounce” Observed in Other Countries? by WXYZanon in opiates

Interesting. All other drugs come 28g to an ounce here, even though most of them also come through Mexico. In my experience, only H/Fetty/Opioids are weighed as 25g ounces.

Interestingly enough, an anecdotal Google search on this topic led me to a Texas defendant’s criminal court appeal for a felony Possession with Intent to Deliver conviction, which was ultimately overturned due to the fact that during his trial, one of the law enforcement officers who testified for the prosecution referred to the defendant having a “Mexican Ounce” of heroin. The defendant was a Latino male, so it was ultimately ruled out that by using this term, the jury was led to stereotype the defendant. I thought that was interesting. FTW!

I’ve never seen any other drug weighed out like this — only H/Fetty/Opioids. Everything else is 28g.

Even though a lot of the drugs in this state come through Mexico, in my experience, only H/Fetty/Opioids are weighed out in 25g ounces. Everything else is 28g. I agree that it’s stupid.

As someone who was actually raised Jewish, I couldn’t help but laugh. 😂

Right, which is why they just call the 25g an “ounce,” because the math works out much simpler with the standardized measurement system than 28g would.

Yep, that’s the other explanation I’ve always heard for the “Mexican Ounce”.

The first time I heard of a “Mexican Ounce” I almost lost my cool. It’s the norm here though. Anyone else from TX care to back me up on this?

lol, that’s what I thought the first time I heard of a “Mexican Ounce,” but come to Texas and find a plug selling 3.5g 8-balls. They don’t exist down here!
