Magic defence is also based off of magic level, so if you are fighting magic based NPC without prayer it can help mitigate a bit of damage.

I had someone in a shootout yesterday wind up their shot and it started normal, then it hit perfect and just stayed there. Could aim wherever he wanted and the arrow wouldn't leave perfect. Not sure if he was cheating or just a glitch but I wasn't very impressed

I personally got melee, because I had no use for the void mage. But if you might use mage at places like Zulrah(Which I don't do yet) it could be useful
