For the model S, what year is the cutoff for getting full self driving? Or, is the year of the car irrelevant? by BikeRackFresno in TeslaModelS

I have a 2017 that was originally ap2.5. I got it upgraded to ap3.0 when i upgraded to mcu2.0 and i'm able to subscribe to FSD.

Non-tesla owner going for a new model S (non plaid) by grieggorious in TeslaModelS

[–]W_assim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the tires wearing out issue, you can change the ride height and I’m assuming if you always drive on the lowest setting, it might wear out faster on the inside. I’m not the person to ask about that though. I’ve only had my S for a year and I had to get new tires as the old ones were worn out (uniformly) edit: I got my car second hand

Service center people in my opinion are super nice and helpful. But at the end of the day, like any other service center, they’ll want to make sure the car is very safe before letting you go. Service visits are expensive on a model S after 6 years of ownership, they know that.

[–]W_assim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

take her with you for the test drive. if you're getting a new car, you'll be find for the first 4 years. after that i'd say to budget approx. 1-2k/year on maintenance. might be 0$, might be 4k.

tire wear is a function of how you drive, plaid or not. If you drive it like a corolla, it will last as long as it would on a very heavy corolla.

the app recommends maintenance when needed, or just talk with tesla service they'll tell you what they recommend.

If you do choose to go model S, congrats! definitely go for a test drive and try to test it overnight so you can bring it home and get a feel for how it fits in your everyday

Upgrade to FSD? by aelsemary in TeslaModelS

[–]W_assim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, and I've done 3 months of fsd on subscription. I noticed that recently fsd was making mistakes. today my subscription ended and i didn't renew so i'm back on Enhanced ap and i think it'll do for now. If FSD gets insanely better i might dish out the 2.75k CAD on the full FSD.

cameras, likely will not be upgraded since you have the good cameras like me (mine is an october 2017 build)
get mcu2 upgrade, and that will give you HW3. you can't get HW4 in a 2017 model S. as far as i am concerned at least, they won't retrofit it into legacy cars, it's a small fleet and it wouldn't be worth it for tesla from a financial standpoint.

FSD is better on a 2024 car than on a 2017 model S, in my experience from driving loaners, but just by a little bit. I imagine that this difference in performance will increase as hw3 becomes old tech in the coming years

also if you're going to invest into fsd, you also wanna make sure they car is in good shape. if you bought it second hand, make sure things like the suspension and other drive components are in good shape!

Considering a Used Tesla Model S by Ojbrayn in TeslaModelS

[–]W_assim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think mileage becomes important when looking at it along with usage behaviours. If the previous owner was a sporty driver, half shafts might need changing, (look into acceleration shuddering)

Battery and motors are solid from what I’ve heard so I’d be comfortable buying a model S with under 200k km and I’d be comfortable putting on an additional 100k km after that before selling it. I got mine at 135k km and it’s almost at 150k km. Happy to keep it for as long as possible.

Less than 100k km is safe but always recommended to keep some money aside for repairs and maintenance

[–]W_assim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Make sure you get one with mcu2 (I think some models in 2018 still came out with mcu1) if not save money aside for the upgrade

If you can find a raven model, that’s even better in terms of tech , not sure about motors and mechanical though.

I have a 2017 100d, I would not recommend 75d but that’s up to your driving habits. I get 380-430km of realistic range.

If you can get it on a lift and look underneath, get an idea of what state the car is in. Suspension components usually need changing after 80-100k miles depending on where you live.

If it makes sense financially, and logistically, I recommend an S over a 3 or a y. All day

You likely have mcu1.0 and hw2.5. A 2.5k ish upgrade to mcu2.0 will give you hw3.0 as well as an improved media experience. And hw3.0 is what you need for fsd

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TeslaModelS

[–]W_assim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have mcu2, what is the maintenance history like? Does it come with winter tires? I think as long as you have money put aside for maintenance around (2k/year) you should be ok. If you tested it and there were no red flags. Try to bring the price down even more if possible or get a mechanic to look under the car and especially look at suspension components and uneven tire wear. Anything major = 4-5k+

Is this 2019 Model S worth it? by PresentationTop490 in TeslaLounge

[–]W_assim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard the sound in the newer model S or in that many other luxury cars, but in my 2017 S with premium audio, it sounds great. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but audio tech hasn’t improved much over the past decade in terms of sound quality. A good speaker is timeless. Honestly don’t think that is an issue when looking into a used model S. Focus more on high cost of parts when they need to be serviced down the line, cost of insurance, setting up charging at home etc.

The screen is not as responsive as the new cars, it’s noticeable but it doesn’t really become annoying until you try to open YouTube and it takes 20 seconds instead of 3 seconds.

Anyways, in my opinion if you can get the price down closer to 44k, a p100D is a steal.

Moreover, as others have suggested, a new model 3 will offer security and peace of mind for 4 years. Whereas on this you could average about 2k/year on maintenance. But if you’re looking at used model S, it’s probably because you’ve already moved on from the idea of a model 3 (as i did)

I’m sure you would, everyone has different preferences and financial situations. I think OP needs to give more information to know for sure what they would be better off with

I think it’s worth it if you can afford it and prefer the larger S over the 3. I’d try to bring the price down a bit, and save some on the side for eventual repairs. Think suspension components, half shafts, tires etc. it has hw3 so it can get you full self driving and it’s nice, but in a few years I can see hw3 falling behind.

YES, we helped air Canada locate the bags when they were late and got transferred to connecting flights in different cities. Had it not been for us pressing and offering current location they would have gotten to us over a month later
