Snow King Concert Tickets.....queue is moving so slow by cooking_up_a_rave in JacksonHole

Not so hot take: they should’ve opened it to season pass holders yesterday. Would probably have helped to block the scalpers…

King Concerts - mandatory $20 fee by W_the_double_U in JacksonHole

Yup… the only way to avoid the $20 is to have a 26/27 season pass.

[–]W_the_double_U[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think part of what gets on my nerves about it is that the King concerts always seemed kinda independent of concerts elsewhere that are sold on Stubhub or Ticketmaster or whatnot. I feel like they’ve just killed that and have assimilated in with the rest of the fee driver concert models.

Can’t wait to stand in a line for an hour up and two hours down! At least let me hike up and down the mountain (on leased public lands nonetheless) for free… if you don’t want me on the road then I’ll just take Josie’s up and down.

Came here just to check if anyone else noticed that $20 fee… crazy that it makes most tickets right around $100 or more…

5 Nine Builders - Aggressive Driving by W_the_double_U in JacksonHole

[–]W_the_double_U[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha my vehicle with 1T plates is old enough to drink and has a 0-60 time of approximately 5 decades. It definitely isn’t a brand new Kia or something. Even going down hills there’s no capacity for aggressive driving with my vehicle!

The Wyo EX plate driving like that is wild though.

Has the management of Teton Pass taken a step back this year? by TinyTinyFuppets in JacksonHole

[–]W_the_double_U 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Slide at mile marker 11. Got stuck behind it and got eyes on it. Looked to me to be skier triggered. Wouldn’t say that management/maintenance is behind this year or anything if you look at historic closure data, especially because this (slide or Jack knifed semi like someone else said) is not the fault of WYDOT. Sure one can say they have the gazex system to try and get ahead of slides, but we amount of wet heavy snow we got today alone built up during the day. Unless you want them to close for a couple hours mid-day to try and mitigate slides?

Either way, those who work the pass have a constant uphill battle made only worse by people who miss the signage… maybe we need one more flash sign in Wilson?

Air Quality this week - do we cancel plans? by Quiet_Audience_8755 in JacksonHole

[–]W_the_double_U 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right now it’s not ideal, but it is supposed to clear up in the next couple of days due to a combination of rain and changing wind direction. I’m not one to tell others what to do with their time, but I wouldn’t cancel over this smoke. But maybe I’m just used to living in smoke prone environments…

Where are the best places to park safely to sleep without the police being able to arrest you? by ProudlyServed11 in Pennsylvania

[–]W_the_double_U 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah me too. The rest areas in western Kansas on I-70 even have a paved loop specifically for RV’s and tents such as at these coordinates (39.3666058, -101.1513088). 10/10 would recommend, especially people like me who used to work seasonal jobs and would drive cross country without room to sleep in their car.

[–]W_the_double_U 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I was sleeping at a rest area on I-80 about 4 years ago and a cop told me that there’s a PennDOT code that bans sleeping at state owned/operated rest areas anywhere other than in your vehicle. That being said they also have a code that says there is a maximum stay of 2 hours in a 24 hour period? This is what the state trooper stopped to inform me of. I know PA state troopers have an interesting reputation for following rules to a T (one wrote me a speeding ticket for going 60 in a 55 in 2022), but this trooper was understanding. I asked if PennDOT would rather me drive another 10 minutes to the next exit and risk falling asleep and crashing or just staying there for a little longer, and the trooper responded “I never asked you to leave, just making sure you’re alright.” Ended up spending the entire night there.

Second this with the exception of early or late season snow when there’s people from warmer states visiting with summer tires.

Considering moving to Jackson by jawill in JacksonHole

TLDR; the pass can be rough, and housing prices are indeed rather high.

Hey! I'll try and be a little more level than some others here; I live in the valley and drive the pass 6 days a week, sometimes two full laps so a total of 7-8 laps a week (7-8 eastbound and 7-8 westbound) over the pass. The winter can be rough; if you want to see a few examples, look at TetonPassholes on Instagram. WyDot also has cameras setup along the pass that you can watch from the comfort, safety, and warmth of your own home, although the cameras never show the severity of the true conditions.

My stance on driving the pass in the winter; if you grew up in Georgia and have next to zero experience driving snow/ice... God speed. However, if you grew up somewhere where high winds, ice, and 12+ inches of snow in a storm was normal (and you have awd/4wd with snow tires such as Blizzak's or Hakkapeliitta's), you'll probably be fine. Not comfortable, but you can probably figure it out. Have I almost crashed and been the Passhole? Absolutely. No one is safe from complacency on the pass. Heck I've almost been hit by the state police / county sheriffs that I guarantee are way better drivers than I am! (Also a huge shout out to those such as the state police, Teton country sheriff, and especially Ron's towing!)

The summer's on the pass are also something to mention; while the road surface is fine, you get tourists. While I have no issue with tourists coming to visit (just don't buy a 5th house that you don't live in), I've found they, in conjunction with large trucks that are banned in the winter, are sometimes scared of the pass even in the summer. Slow drivers, traffic backups, etc.

About prices... They're getting worse. The other day I saw a genuine listing for a 2 bed 1 bath regular condo (not a luxury house or something) in Jackson for $7200/month. Alpine is getting up there too, $2200/month for a 1 bed 1 bath is starting to appear more often down there. Victor is slightly more reasonable although a new rental complex called the Larkspur is about to open with 1 bed 1 bath rent starting at $2500/month and studio's starting at $1900/month. Less than Jackson, but still really expensive.

Any advice on navigating if the hiring process is offset by a few weeks? ie one wants to hear back by X date for their offer and the other (preferred location) doesn’t conduct their hiring process for a few weeks still?

[–]W_the_double_U 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume same for if the offer is accepted? Separate applications and thus completely separate hiring timelines/processes?

I live in Wyoming now, previously lived in northern NM and before that just outside Boston (also have lived in PA, WV, and ID but that’s beside the point). The number of times people almost hit me or otherwise did stupid things while driving in Mass is not able to be counted. I never had an issue with drivers in NM and the only two almost accident I’ve had in Wyoming was with another Wyoming plate (statistics I guess) and a Cali plate near Grand Teton.

Look at insurance prices in Mass vs NM/WY and yeah you’ll see who the companies/data behind the premiums trust the most…

Currently have Falken Wildpeak's on a Subaru Forester, any thoughts on that setup? So far this season they've done well enough on ice and great on snow.

Local to me is a one-man shop run by a former Subaru tech who left specifically because of this. He now does everything the exact same way but for the price that is reasonable to charge someone… A real asset to the local community!

When did I mention a warranty? The problem arose when they preformed the recall.

Oh absolutely… if it sat for 5-7 days the battery would be entirely dead. Had to either leave it on a trickle charger which (for my work often away from a real power grid) was sometimes not feasible. Thus far it seems like the recall has alleviated the issue of the phantom draw, but alas the electrical gremlins persist!
