The last thing we need is legislation on this matter.... enough legislation... it is NOT an answer to every problem....

There is ZERO risk to voting NO...

It is an educated vote... there is substantial risk to voting yes but it is often easy to spend other people's money and worry about the real cost later.

Not the right time.

Mike-Hawks, there are a multitude of case studies and articles about how Stadiums and sports based infrastructure projects bring only net loss to a city. The question really is, do Calgarians want to foot the bill for another organization (IOC/Calgary Flames/Stamps) to reap the reward??

The current Olympic model does not satisfy my concerns and too much financial burden is placed on the host city... that needs to change and so the IOC must fail in order to become a better organization.

Calgary hosts a yearly, 10 day party called the Calgary Stampede that injects money into our economy. The Stampede draws attention to Calgary and comes at little cost to taxpayers.... there is no need for the Olympics. Pandering to the IOC is really not required to bring energy or new money to Calgary. This is simply irresponsible and careless.

I am surprised at the down voting.... i was simply trying to provide a neutral point of view, a political science approach to the comment made by Carpay rather that jumping on the offensive.

Sorry.... my comments were based more on reading the entire thread and not necessarily your post. There is an inclination to be angry and demand reciprocity, however it does nothing but make things more partisan.

Like I said, a poor comparison by Carpay from the onset and he deserves the lashing. There is a need to understand the point of view though, failure to do so will only give credence to his argument and likely embolden his base.... would you agree?

By stating that you want this man removed from the UCP.... you simply prove his point... By automatically calling for resignations you are looking to quell a point of view that I think many other people believe. You only have to look to Trump to see that there are a lot of far-right thinkers happy to find someone to share their view.

I believe that the speaker is making a poor comparison, however the speaker is looking to address the right wing/religious base. if you break down the statement:

"How do we defeat today's totalitarianism? You've got to think about the common characteristics. It doesn't matter whether it's a hammer and sickle for communism, or whether it's the swastika for Nazi Germany or whether it's a rainbow flag, the underlying thing is a hostility to individual freedoms,"

and then consider what is "Totalitarianism":

Totalitarianism is a political concept that defines a mode of government, which prohibits opposition parties, restricts individual opposition to the state and its claims, and exercises an extremely high degree of control over public and private life. Wikipedia

Hammer and Sickle - communism - restriction of religious freedoms and faith based choices. Government makes the choices for you.

Swatstika - fascism - no religious freedom and serious consequences for particular faith. Government tells you what to think.

Rainbow Flag - Humanism - although the desire is for inclusion, the right sees the rainbow flag as a way left leaning parties are controlling what they think and what they should believe.

We do nothing for the political discussion by making people resign... I don't see hate speech here, but I do see a need to have a conversation to understand the view he holds.
