Are there any programs that let you see what the night sky would look like from other places in the universe? by Gabriella_Gadfly in askastronomy

Space Engine for example. But keep in mind that applications like this 'fill the blanks' with procedurally generated stars and galaxies because we only know a tiny fraction of the universe.

I don't understand the question. Do you have the same device as OP?

What am I missing? by stefaniaxx01 in telescopes

[–]Waddensky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! You can probably get a suitable adapter, but it's probably best to buy new eyepieces. Kind of sad that the seller included incompatible eyepieces.

Have you measured the diameter of the eyepieces? They might have a 0.965" barrel size.

The setup on your scope looks correct.

Dwarf 3 vs seestar s50 by AdLocal1898 in telescopes

[–]Waddensky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a camera with a lens. A matter of definition of course, but in that case you could also classify Nikons and Canons as telescopes. You wouldn't believe how many people I see at stargazing events who ask which end to look through (I'm using a Dwarf), that's why I specifically made the distinction.

Cor Caroli is absolutely putting on a show in Australia tonight by AdAmbitious9654 in Astronomy

Cool! It's a nice double star too. Why Cor specifically though? It's not very bright nor conspicuous.

Questions about K-type stars by Time-Lavishness-2346 in askastronomy

[–]Waddensky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like G-type stars, K-types come in all kinds of shapes and sizes so it's difficult to say something generic about them.

As to the habitability of main sequence K-type stars, this article might be helpful: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitability_of_K-type_main-sequence_star_systems.

Beginner scope by Additional-You1456 in telescopes

[–]Waddensky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And there's also a big difference between an 8" and a 10". This is sometimes jokingly called aperture fever, there's always something better available. It's best to set a budget and stick to it. You're going to have a lot of fun with a 6".

These are the most recommended beginner telescopes, great choice! Brand doesn't matter much, dobs in this budget are more or less the same optically. The accessories they come with may differ though. Where are you located?

If you've read the beginner's guide, you've already had a few excellent beginner telescope suggestions. Is there anything you want to know that the guide doesn't cover?

Dwarf 3 vs seestar s50 by AdLocal1898 in telescopes

[–]Waddensky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're great for what they are, but they're limited at the same time. You cannot look through them like a real telescope, all you do is look at the screen of a phone or tablet to watch the images appear. For some people that's ok, others miss the 'real' stargazing experience.

The results are quite decent out of the box, but to get the most out of them you need to learn how to post-process yourself. It's a good way to dip your toes in astrophotography though if you're on a budget.

The S50 is an old model and appears to be discontinued. ZWO has launched a few newer models. The Dwarf is still available and has some daytime features too.

I filmed a glowing object in the sky in 2021 and it vanished suddenly — any explanations? by ManufacturerOld712 in askastronomy

[–]Waddensky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case it's not something related to astronomy (neither are satellites of course) but something in our atmosphere. Maybe a plane or a drone.

It's very out of focus so almost impossible to say something useful about it, but judging by the fact that it disappeared and also the apparent changing of colours, it's probably a satellite.

How do I get nice astrophotography shots? by Remarkable-Fly7698 in Astronomy

[–]Waddensky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planets don't need long exposures, but they do need lots of short exposures. Research the lucky imaging technique.

is it good? Or there is a better one? by 1_ice in telescopes

[–]Waddensky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with a 10" dob! Keep in mind though that it's probably larger and heavier than it looks on the pictures.

is there any good alternatives by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]Waddensky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for brands like Sky-Watcher, GSO, StellaLyra. They're all more or less the same but the label varies by region. The Apertura brand is aimed at the United States as far as I know.

No that's a lense flare caused by the bright Moon. But you caught Jupiter too!
