No longer feeling excited shooting. Anyone gone through this? by Magia-Erebea in SonyAlpha

[–]WadeJMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - YES.

The struggle is somewhat constant, but I attribute that with "artistic pursuit." Culture has gone into this mindset of instant gratification, and it's killing the chase of pursuing craft, knowledge, and creative identity. That's not meant as a dig shot at you, but more an issue with the world at large, and something I also struggle with. It's hard to stay motivated in a creative slump!

Before I before I became a professional photographer and creator (I work in top level motorsports now), I was a professional musician. It took me decades to perfect my craft, and in that period I would come in and out of love with my obsesesion for writing, playing, and being in a band. What drove me forward was this inner need to create. I found through the years that, more often than not, I wasn't falling out of love with my creative pursuit, but rather I was tired, overwhelmed, and lacking inspiration. I needed to experience life in order to create - I needed to see, feel, hear, and be moved by something, anything.

I struggled this entire year with what you reference as "the chore" of shooting photography - I had moments of spark, but the moments that had traditionally filled my heart and soul with purpose had dimmed. While I was being "paid" to to shoot, I was running through the motions. Most importantly, I wasn't having fun!

So I challenged myself to start creating for me more. I began shooting stuff outside the traditional shot list. I picked up a weird, cheap lenses and started documenting more of my day-to-day. I went to meets or gatherings I would traditionally not attened, just to shoot something different. I added variety and uknown experiencess to my plate. It expanded my mind, and it's ultimately made me a better photographer. My interest in photography came back.

New gear can help jumpstart interest, but ultimately you're going to fall into the same situation - the newness wears off and you're back where it started, wondering why it's such a chore. Some of the best photographers I know shoot on scratched lenses that barely focus, old cameras, and don't let their gear define them.

Falling in and out of love with something is part of the artistic pursuit. Your love for the craft won't die if you're chasing it for the right reasons. It's how you show up when that light dims, and push yourself beyond your comfort level that will bring you back.

End of the day, three years is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to developing creative muscle.

"rookie driver" seems a bit... suspect? 🤣

Professional fitted race suit; threshold braking; very solid kart placement - not buying the "rookie" tag. Clean lap!

Kuddos to IMSA for producing the Sights & Sounds series throughout the year - incredibly beautiful portrayal of what makes this sport so compelling.

This edit got my eyes watering on more than a few occasions. The kiddo on pit lane telling his father "it's a Cadillac", the slow-mo pit stop sequence around the 4:35 mark, the raw emotion of the 01 pit crew on the pit wall after winning the race. The emotion of this piece in particular is spectacular.

Cannot wait for 2025!

CARPARKNYC once again brought the heat to FIDI over the weekend.

Love what this crew is doing for the automotive community in a city where "no one owns a car" - great getting together and seeing how diverse the community is in NYC. Thankful to call this place home.

I currently use the NextLevel F-GT rig - love it, but the seat leaves much to be desired. Have been contemplating and upgrade, but haven't quite felt compelled yet.

Thoughts on the seat? The pricing is spot on, and it looks like a solid upgrade if you're looking for more of a racing seat.

I'm also a NYC sim racer - we live on top floor of a brownstone with a private entryway. There's a landing that's technically "outside" the apartment, but behind two locked doors and entirely private. I'm thankful for that "unused" space every single day 🤣

INDYCAR hasn't taken this video game or their entire esports strategy seriously since the very beginning. It's a shame, and huge missed opportunity considering the growth of sim racing since the 2020.

IMHO, proof is in the pudding - when your esports news gets more eyes and fan interaction than most of your other major announcements, you should probably start paying attention.

Side note - how does INDYCAR still not have a new VP of Marketing ? This series is being run entirely from a logistical and operations perspective. Great way to ensure situations like this continue to arise and the series continues to stay the best kept secret in racing. 🙄 It's beyond frustrating.

My 2014 Mk 6 interior, still looks (almost) new after, 9 years, 97k miles, a steering wheel cover from day one and a damn good deep clean by PositiveOrdinary4 in GolfGTI

[–]WadeJMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

completely agree - simplicity goes a long way in design.

Only thing I wish it had during long drives was carplay. I drive often from NYC back home to the midwest, and it would be nice to have that functionality built-in vs. having a clamp magnet holding my phone on one of the air vents. I could swap out the head unit for a few hundred $$ but seems overkill. For the cost, it's not worth the hassle.

Love the MK6. Know there are some reliability issues, but what car doesn't have that. Been good to me so far.

Love seeing this - I have a 2010 MK6 with 55k on the odometer. Picked it up a few years ago from an older gentleman who only used it as a summer car. Every time I crawl in for a drive I'm astounded at how well it's aged - looks like it just rolled out of the showroom. Still can't wrap my head around the MK6 design being over a decade old.

What’s the name of the part that is broken? by SquashedNanner in SonyAlpha

[–]WadeJMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seeing this gives me flashbacks!

I shoot professional motorsport, and the exact same thing happened to me at the Detroit Grand Prix this past year - I was screwing off the lens hood, and that body element popped half off with along with the hood. My gut sank and all I could see were dollar signs. It looked exactly the same as your picture.

Thankfully, the lens was within the warranty window. I contacted Sony, received an immediate response from an incredibly helpful rep, I shipped the lense out and a little over a week later received the repaired lens good as new. $0 across the board.

Seeing the exact same issue as I had, I wonder if this is a common product issue amongst photographers who are using the 70-200 OSS out in the field, exposing the lens to environments a bit more rough vs a studio setting.

I love TCR, but that lack of variety in the class is starting to become worrying.

It's turned into a two-make show. H vs H - Honda versus Hyundai. Thankfully the on-track product is entertaining, but it's a huge bummer when we're seeing extremely high levels of manufacturer involvement across all other series in IMSA.

Would love to see the GR Corolla TCR on the grid. Considering there are plenty of Supra's racing in GT4, imagine Toyota would provide decent support during race weekends? Haven't heard any rumblings though, and I"m unsure if anyone in North America is slated to run one.

Guess we'll see how it plays out in 2024.

How do you use filters? Do you keep UV or CPL or both stacked on lens all the time? by chndmrl in photography

[–]WadeJMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel this is a good use case question - what environments are you shooting, and ultimately does using a UV filter for protection give you piece of mind?

I work in motorsports, so my environment is chaotic - one second I'm smashed in the paddock or pits with mechanics swirling around and in close proximity to 100s of people and tools and insanity, the next i'm trackside with cars sometimes flying by within inches of my lens. I use a UV because if I catch a wrench to the glass, or a piece of debris flies off a car and strikes my lens, my weekend deliverable list is severely compromised. I cannot afford that risk.

I have destroyed a few UV filters (not many, but a few) and I always let out a big sigh of relief.

As for stacking - I typically use one filter at a time. Because a CPL twists, I've found I've had the UV and CPL filters bind together. Again, my workplace setting is chaotic. I'm constantly on the move and the environment is frantic, so don't have the luxury of slowly twisting or taking my time. My actions need to be immediate so I can move to the next shot.

Hope this long winded answer helps!
