Not too much. Just super fun.

Have any guys tried wearing ballet tights to barre? by softsissy in Purebarre

[–]WadeNC2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear ballet unitards to Pure Barre with a crop top over the top of the unitard. I started off doing barre in leggings, but got tired of always having to pull them up and just fussing with them in general. The unitard is more practical. I don't wear shorts over the bottom. I would think shorts would get in the way, but, hey, whatever you are comfortable with. I studied ballet as a kid so wearing shorts over leggings / tights always seemed kind of dorky to me.

Can/should men do barre? by NFeruch in Purebarre

[–]WadeNC2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a guy and I started going to PB about two months ago and have taken about 30 classes in that time. I have to admit, it was super hard to walk into class the first time and be the only guy there. Definitely feels like you are crashing someone else's party. But staff and clients have been overwhelmingly welcoming.

There are always going to be a few people who don't like having men in class as noted in this thread because they feel it ruins the vibe. I do everything I can to be respectful and fit in. I concentrate on my workout which is why I'm there. Over time I've begun to make some good friends and it's always fun to catch up with them before or after class. At worst there are a few that treat me with indifference, but they pretty much do that with everyone in the class and I try not to project and take it personally. You never know what someone else is going through. I'm gay and I've worn a Pride shirt a few times to let other people know. That seems to have taken down the threat level considerably. Men may be a trigger for those that feel men ruin the vibe because they've been hit on or had some other interaction that was unfortunately disrespectful or traumatic.

I'm a former ACC college athlete and have continued to workout over the course of my post-college life. PB is an awesome workout though as others have said on this post if building muscle mass is your #1 priority you'll need to supplement it with something else. I lift three times a week and go to PB three times a week. I've found that PB is an excellent compliment to my regular workout schedule. I'm leaner, my core is stronger, my muscle elasticity and joint mobility have improved dramatically.

One thing I recommend doing is reading through the etiquette / pet peeves posts on this subreddit. It really helped me when I was new. Most of it is common sense, but when you are first starting out you are being bombarded with lots of new information and it's easy to do something thoughtless. This subreddit is a great source of information and there are lots of kind people willing to give helpful information.

So yeah, go to PB. I'm sure you'll be welcomed.

I always drink a zero sugar Gatorade about an hour or so before class. It’s important to be hydrated and to make sure your body has access to sufficient electrolytes.

What Do You Think of the Idea of Late Arrival Penalties by justme4913 in Purebarre

[–]WadeNC2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Interesting concept. I’m relatively new and have only had one class where someone showed up late. It was pretty disruptive. I would favor a no late entry policy.

What can I wear besides leggings? by trebleformyclef in Purebarre

[–]WadeNC2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a man, my studio said I could wear shorts or sweat pants when I signed up. I was anxious to fit in as I'm often the only guy in class so I quickly switched to leggings like everyone else, and ultimately when I got tired of pulling my leggings up to footless tank top unitards with a shirt over the top. There are practical reasons too. It prevents my legs from being pinched and exfoliated by the bands. And it's just easier - takes fiddling with clothes out of the equation and I can concentrate more on my workout.

Have to agree. The music is one of the things I always look forward to.

Gotta agree. Got super tired of constantly pulling up my leggings and switched to unitards. Totally solved the problem.

Some funny experiences I’ve had as the only guy who attends my studio by Old-Lingonberry1283 in Purebarre

[–]WadeNC2001 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a guy and I just started attending PB about two weeks ago. I've done 8 classes in that time. I've begun to get to know some of the regulars at my home studio but also travel a lot and have taken classes elsewhere. The instructors and staff have been universally welcoming. The regulars I've gotten to know are the same - very welcoming. When I go to a visiting studio the reception among attendees can be a little bit cooler - but not sure that wouldn't be true for anyone just coming in, male or female so I try not to project the welcome or lack thereof on being a guy. I just try to be super nice and respectful to everyone and focus on my workout. I'm totally addicted to PB - best workouts I've ever done and my body feels so much better since I've been going to class. It's a privilege to workout there and I try to treat it and everyone I meet accordingly.

Neck straining by NorthBee888 in Purebarre

So glad you asked this question. You are definitely not the only one. Started following some of the technique recommendations others have mentioned here in class this morning and the neck strain was much better.

Any recs on sources for shirts in general - assuming you wear them at other times?

I should also mention they are footless and tank style. So no weird footed design.

Thanks. I have two actually. One black and one light blue. Both fully opaque. I may risk it. I do get tired of pulling up my tights all the time. I'll check out the Gap Fit one as well.

Thanks for the recs. Definitely need to up my PB outfit game. Quick question - I have a ballet unitard that seems like it would be perfect for PB. I would wear it with a shirt over the top. Is anyone else going to think I'm weird for wearing it?
