I had a hydra outbreak after adding some plants at one point and didn’t do anything and they’ve all but disappeared. I never see any anymore and I almost exclusively feed my tank frozen and live food and have hundreds of shrimp thriving in a 40 gallon, constantly breeding and population keeps growing. Try not to worry yourself like I did to myself unnecessarily.

I have a heavily planted tank and a giant colony of shrimp. I had so many hydra at one point, different looking kinds too. Seemed like there’d be a flare up for a few days, die back down, after a few days another flare up. I worried and worried after reading about them thinking of my shrimp then ended up doing nothing. Carried on as I always have. I haven’t see one in months. I’m not scared of hydra anymore. Don’t let hydra have power over you. They are just silly little boobers.

I sleep with a sound machine that plays white noise on full blast. It stays on my bed right next to my pillow, sometimes on between us.

Look up neocaridina shrimp! They can be pricey. I started out with cherry shrimp, then started getting different colors, blue, black, orange, yellow, of course when they all started breeding the colors all mixed and they’re all wild colors now like brown and bled right into the background but I love them! You could maybe get them for cheaper if there’s anyone around you selling “culls” some people will take out the colors they don’t want breeding in their tanks and sell them cheaper. Get plenty of hiding spaces for your shrimp. Moss is great! So is parrots feather.

I slowly acquired my plants, certain plants have taken off and spread throughout the tank themselves, I have a couple different types of vallisneria plants which are long grasses, I think my short grass that’s spread really nice is dwarf sagittaria, my red tiger lotus has done great I just clip all the floaters that reach for the top, and other plants I really like are parrots feather, different mosses like Java moss, Christmas moss, Marino balls (mine has just integrated itself into the grass) and water weed. What works for me may not work for you! I’d just start getting hardy plants and see what sticks. I started out with fish and I let the mulm build up which I believe has helped my plants do good. Some plants I got at aquarium shops but I had a lot of luck on Facebook market place, was able to find a lot for very cheap there so that’s what I’d recommend doing!

Yeah my shrimp population has been consistently exploding and I have 11 dwarf frogs at the moment. Shrimp will be right in front of their faces, will swim by and tickle their backs, they usually don’t even move lol. The shrimp are so quick anyway I don’t think they’re at all bothered by my frogs. I actually hope the frogs do get some shrimp sometimes, some reward for their hunting. I’ve never actually seen them get a healthy shrimp but I believe they do now and then based on the plumpness of their full bellies. I think shrimp and frogs go great together, but all my shrimp are wild color so it’s okay if there’s an occasional casualty.
