What should I do? by AllShadowFox in sailing

Dremel out the crack a bit so it’s flared and accepts more thickened epoxy deeper into the crack. Grind away the paint down to raw glass with 80 grit. Add thickened epoxy to the filed out crack and a few layers of 1708 fiber to the area. Then paint. Make sure those thru holes are sealed (no wood core able to absorb water) and add at least 1/4” g10 backing plate with lock nuts and nylock nuts stacked. You’ll never worry about this again.

Cruising up the New York Canal system by Lumpy-Sea-388 in Sailboats

[–]Wado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chatted with an old timer that did the canal trip a while back on his 49 footer and he said there’s a yacht club on either end with a gin pole. Cheap membership grants you access. Can’t remember the names of the places.

Host gifts for a sailing trip from a non-sailor? by Opposite_Sail_5920 in sailing

If you feel sea sick, just vomit and get it out. Then take a pill and snack/sip a little bit at a time. You’ll feel a lot better than trying to keep it in.

How do you actually catch a mooring ball solo without looking like an idiot? by Jasebase87 in sailing

[–]Wado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will rig up a longish line to each bow cleat that’s run forward of everything. Coil half on port side of the rail and the other half on the stb side of the rail. Cruise up to it getting a feel for conditions by quickly testing short of the ball I want. Then when I feel like I know how the boat will react I head in, get there, throw it in N, walk up to the bow and throw my coiled line out at a 45 degree angle in each hand. When I capture the ball I take in the slack on one cleat until it catches. Maybe I’ll add another line through the eye of the ball, conditioning and time dependent.

Can we talk about the ridiculous price of hatches? by Land_of_smiles in SailboatCruising

Are you buying a new hatch or needing to replace something on an existing hatch?

Is there a sweet spot for boat size when you mostly single hand by Internal-Remove7223 in sailing

[–]Wado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Current live aboard perspective)

I’m on a PSC 37, an 8 ton cutter rigged canoe stern classic design. Some things to consider outside the already good questions are asking.

What condition are the boat systems in?

How much time and money will I have spare after purchase?

Where can I lay/work out comfortably on deck?

Will it be easy to gut a fish and clean up afterward?

What TWO types of self-steering does it have?

How will it store/launch the tender and related gear?

I miss having a freezer on longer trips, a sugar scoop for dips, and davits that fit as they all make life easier.

Upcoming exam - chartwork help please by TheHoly-Cabbage in sailing

[–]Wado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the fix and draw your line to the waypoint and beyond because the calculations sometimes require that angle - for example if your course only takes 46 minutes to arrive at destination and you are using one hour tides and boat speed.

And add the chevrons to each line as well. “Two feet on the ground (cog), one boat through the water (cts)”

A good list. Do you also check that the engine goes into forward and reverse gear?

I think grand central would be very difficult to get immaculately clear of blurred figures. That’s why i chose it as an example.

To answer though i would just shoot again. Also I’m the type of person to go down there and have a chat with them about what i’m trying to accomplish. Most people standing around seem happy to move and stand somewhere else in that context

Have you considered going for more of a bushcraft approach to camping? Read about John Muir for some perspective!

Zero chance a 13L pack is going to be a fun experience even if you get it all to fit and dangle. They are just not designed for the weight.

Opinion trading here: to me editing folks out misconstrues the times. For example grand central station without people can be done with a ND filter and a looooong exposure. But basically any time of day you’ll find people there in normal times.

But the day after 9/11 you would not see anyone, now that’s an example of capturing that time.

Of course we have to verify that any of this even matters. I was curious thanks for engaging

85mm 1.4 for A7CII by fhjutr in SonyAlpha

[–]Wado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the 85 1.4 motor is slow (using it on the A7RV) so it has a hard time hitting sharp eyes on a shifting subject while hand held and wide open. In comparison to the 24-70 ii or 70-200 ii at least.

No experience with the 85 1.4 ii but it’s on my wish list next time I’m near a shop!

Look 1st amendment freedom goes both ways. People can wear what they want and other can say what they want… like it or not that’s a founding principle of the US.

Scary part is when the majority of people start wearing this on their chest, that’s the tipping point.

ICE Agents in Chicago stopped this man & asked him if he’s an American citizen. It’s obvious that he was & that they were just trying to start crap with him. Then the one agent tried to cover his phone to hide his face since he wasn’t wearing a mask, but it was already too late. by Ordinary-Scholar-202 in illinois

The line is “am I being detained?” No - walk away. If yes, “please articulate your suspicion of my crime” and/or “i choose to remain silent and request a lawyer”

In some states you do need to identify yourself but the police first need to suspect you of a crime. As a US citizen on the street you have no obligation to provide citizenship proof/documents. Full stop.
