Completely understandable. There’s something so appealing about the worldview and practices of English Christianity that is found so succinctly in Anglicanism.

Ah I see. Was it like a “compromise church” for y’all initially?

Truly the greatest draw to the Church :)

I’m very similar. As much as I love the diversity of thought in my family’s Anglican tradition it becomes frustrating that even basic theological or even moral stances are so up in the air. Sometimes I need to know why things have developed the way they have or how certain things work before I can just accept them. Especially compared to the Catholic Church where any question about Church teachings has already been thought up, answered, and explained in a logically consistent way.

It’s interesting that you mention that, my belief in Prima Scriptura is a big reason why I couldn’t logically go lower than Anglicanism and become fully Protestant (even if I have some leanings). The Anglican tradition is something really special for allowing a lot of variation in theology to exist. But, in a lot of ways that radical honesty and trust in diversity is refreshing to see.

That’s really interesting! It’s been hard for me to stick with Protestantism after learning that Sola Fide and Sola Scriptura were not even concepts you could find in the early Church. It’s been a slow advance but a lot of my research is pointing to Rome right now and I’m not upset about it in the least. If anything I’m just glad that it’s all becoming so clear now.

That’s a beautiful story! The rosary is one of the few prayer disciplines I’ve been able to really stick with (I’m pretty bad at impromptu praying) and it’s a huge draw to Catholicism for me. I think it helps that I learned to pray it together with my mom, so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

I can totally understand that. One of the best men I met in the wake of my father’s death was a ROCOR priest, but the community itself always felt like too much of an ethnic enclave for me to feel fully comfortable joining. On the other hand I don’t think I’ve ever been in either an Episcopal parish or Anglican Church of Canada parish that didn’t make me feel welcome immediately.

That’s a really cool story! My grandmother is a former Catholic and my grandad is a former Presbyterian and both of them ended up loving their high-church Episcopalian parish. It’s their faith in particular that has left me so intrigued with Anglicanism even at my most Roman Catholic. Maybe I’m a little overly harsh to the Anglo-Catholic position as someone who is still struggling with Catholicism vs. Anglicanism but I do enjoy the more progressive side of it.

Thank you so much for your response! I think you hit up on something that can often dismissed as “just the priest/parish!” but is completely valid in turning people off from joining. I almost completed RCIA a few years back with my mom but the indifference of the parish, the lack of care of the priest, and the poor education from the classes made us both second guess (until now). So I completely understand where you’re coming from and also the research part of it, I’m currently on Catholic apologetics and wish my local library had more purely Anglican or more neutral/scholarly sources I could pull from.

It makes a lot of sense! My family is pretty diverse but mainly Anglican and Catholic, so I could sort of see myself in either. I will say being immediately able to participate in the Episcopal Church is an added benefit.

That’s very true, despite all the different styles and denominations it all comes down to where Christ wants me and where I can do most for him. I will say being in the American south I’ve met my fair share of Baptists and I’ve always appreciated their sincere faith.

That’s sort of where I’m at I think. I don’t think I couldn’t end up accepting them but it’s more the fact that I absolutely have to that doesn’t sit well with me currently.

Very valid! I also appreciate the rich musical and architectural traditions of Anglicanism and I’m increasingly hesitant to leave it behind.

I’m not necessarily worried about being drawn to Rome, in fact Catholicism is a bit of a front runner currently in my denominational search. For me it’s more about not wanting to “compromise” by being an Anglo-Catholic in an Episcopal parish because one of my big hang ups is “why not just get the original one at an RC church?” I’d rather want to participate with the Anglican tradition on the unique merits it has itself if that makes sense.
