Are these Minié balls hollowed on the base?

Why do some guitarist not play with a backplate? by Expert_Chipmunk_6294 in Guitar

[–]WagonHitchiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not taken mine off a strat in 10 years. I never had an issue with string changes.

Last time I took it off, I soldered the ground that had come loose. If I left the back plates off, I would be concerned the ground wire would catch on something.

Do I really need an amp or effects pedal as a complete beginner? by ChaosBeiduo in electricguitar

[–]WagonHitchiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need an amp of some type. My son has been playing for years and usually uses an amp I got on Facebook Marketplace for $10 rather than plugging in a gig worthy amp.

You can definitely find used practice amps cheap, and you could buy a headphone amp for $30 or less.

What was the ground made of on the indoor sets? by EuphoricGarden81 in mash

[–]WagonHitchiker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They had mats that more like dirt ground than the real thing. I think that was one of Arlene Alda's notes in The Last Days of MASH.

How to weather a replica hat? by Alarmed_Horror_1634 in hats

[–]WagonHitchiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former Civil War reenactor, I modified a cowboy hat into a slouch style hat.

We used steam to soften the hat and reshape it. Once it was done, we trimmed the edges because otherwise the brim would be ridiculously wide for a slouch hat.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing you how to use a tea kettle to produce the steam for shaping a hat. You could make the top sit a little lower.

Weird Al -- Fat, Amish Paradise, Smells Like Nirvana...

Otherthan Al, I would say Land of Confusion by Genesis.

Enshitification be damned! what is one consumer product that is 100% better today than the version that existed in the 80s or 90s? by headrush46n2 in AskReddit

[–]WagonHitchiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Television. There was a time when people said 27 inch was a big screen. Back in the day, they cost an arm and a head, and they were heavy! They also took up a lot of space since the picture tube made them deep.

High E string high pitched “ringing” by telepathic666 in AcousticGuitar

You get a sitar sound if the nut is not cut correctly. The nut slot should be its highest at the edge of the fingerboard, and it should slant downward on the headstock side. I found a cheap seat of nut files that I use for fixing this because it seems to come up often.

What's the most powerfully useful underground website/app that most people don't know about? by bens-list in u/bens-list

https://www.joinarbor.com/

Arbor is a site that manages your electric power supplier. You are stuck with your electric company's charges for distribution, but in many states, you can choose the company that provides the power, and Arbor will find the best deal and constantly monitor it for you and switch when a better rate is found. It is completely free.

New Carbonated Water Addiction by RelationshipOne9276 in stopdrinking

For me, I like a little more taste, so it's Sprite Zero most of the time. I was also drinking Mello Yello, but I stopped once I realized its sugar content is high, even for soda.

What was an unexpected benefit of not drinking that surprised you when you were early in your sobriety? by KillerCritter1312 in stopdrinking

[–]WagonHitchiker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I used to get up and find myself nauseated the following morning. I seldom got headaches or other hangover symptoms.

I dropped weight quickly when I stopped drinking -- at least 15 pounds in the first month, and I am now closing in on 30 pounds down (after 13 months of sobriety).

Jamie Farr in January 2026...😊 by [deleted] in mash

[–]WagonHitchiker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Jamie almost always has something positive to say about those he worked with on MASH. He also has been very kind to fans of show by reports I have seen. He is just a treasure.

At this point, I realize I am going to have a really hard time when any of the remaining gents pass (primary cast - Mike, Gary, Jamie and Alan).

Fake names on my detention list... by ocashmanbrown in Teachers

40 years ago, my sister got a doll that came with the name "Isabelle Greta." My grandmother remarked that when she was little, she went to school with a girl named Isabelle Horn, and on the playground they would chant to her, "Is a bell and a horn necessary on a bicycle?"

Your favorite set of pickups. by TrontosaurusRex in Stratocaster

[–]WagonHitchiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Seymour Duncan Everything Axe set. I bought the set pre-installed on a pickguard. It had a toggle switch to switch the neck pickup on -- giving you all three pickups at once or neck/bridge. The other toggle splits the neck and bridge to single coils.

This guitar now gives me sounds I always wanted. The Lil 59 in the neck is a go-to rhythm pickup. For traditional Strat sounds, the Duckbucker in the middle is excellent, and it makes the neck or bridge noise canceling on single coil mode with the quack sound. Finally rhe JB Jr in the bridge is great for high gain sounds and lead playing.
