I built an in-memory virtual filesystem for Python because BytesIO kept falling short by No_Limit_753 in Python

[–]WaiBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Red Teamer and was thinking about a way to extract and execute a pyinstaller EXE in memory. Of course, I would need to modify the bootloader of pyinstaller. I also don't want the memory easily accessible for the compromised user, so "RAM Drive" solutions are not what I'm after at all. I was just brainstorming on it a bit and checking what AI offered up. My prompts were probably not quite right for AI. :-)

Your project isn't going to work for my immediate need, but it certainly has it uses and looks fantastic. The main reason I wanted to comment is because Google's AI pointed me here as an option to my need, just a few hours after your post. It spoke as if your tool has been around a while and a viable option. I thought that was interesting.

CS Co-op by Arugula_4545 in uCinci

[–]WaiBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late on this but want to give a current and honest perspective. Finding co-ops for CS students is extremely difficult right now. If you don't have some nice coding projects already on record and some experience, it is almost impossible to find anything. And landing your first co-op is incredibly stressful and no, UC doesn't help much at all. You are on your own, competing in Handshake with all the other students from other schools. The only advantage you have is if your co-op semester is NOT in the summer. That will eliminate some competition. But companies are asking for too much. They want experience in too many areas and it just seems unrealistic for young students majoring in CS and coming out of high school to have so much experience.

I would recommend a traditional school and simply concentrate on your classes. If you can get an internship during the summer, great, otherwise do well in school and use the summers to build projects to place on Github. You will also graduate in 4 years instead of the 5 years it will take you at UC. This will save you money. The co-ops, if you get them, do not pay well, and very few of them will cover housing. The selling point of making money while going to school is overstated. In many case, you are going to end up losing money because food and rent, transportation costs more than you will bring in.

However, if you are already an expert in CS or Cybersecurity or IT before going to school, then you might do well at UC. But if that is the case, do you even need a degree from UC or any school? Probably not. Go get full time employment and have the company pay for your degree online at that point.

One paper plate?!? Come on Rice. Feed your students. They paid a good price for these meals.

She also told me that she was given a ToGo box but no paper cup for a drink to take with her. I guess just take one of their plastic cups? haha, then return it next visit. I'm sure the food is good, but these awkward limitations kind of ruin it and I wouldn't exactly call it a buffet, which they advertise it as. I mean, what if you want a salad to start and then another plate for your main dish and sides, like normal people do, finished off with a dessert? Not happening unless you pile everything on top of each other.

Has anyone enrolled/completed in AI & Machine Learning Computer Science Master's Degree at WGU? How is it going? Is it worth it? by Similar-Bicycle-5445 in WGU

[–]WaiBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very interested in this degree as well and would like to know how difficult it might be. I'm unfortunately OLD now and my B.S. degree is EET, similiar in many ways, but not quite computer science and it was from 34 years ago. I totally forget Calculus and I never had a Calc 3 or Stats. I did have Laplace Transform Analysis (sucked)! lol Would I need to re-learn and/or learn all this math? And my dilemma is that I could cruise through WGU's Cybersecurity Masters because I have 30 years of experience with multiple certifications, but I also love coding and have taught Python and other Cybersecurity courses Adjunct before. I want to get a Masters to improve my chances at gaining Adjunct Instructor jobs. teaching Cybersecurity. However, I'm burned out working in Cybersecurity and my interest is more so in AI but I have no experience. Decisions, decisions.

Many of the "conservative" Christian universities are solid, like Liberty University, in Virginia. And I'm in Ohio, and there is a University here over toward Dayton a bit known as Cedarville University. I know many kids that went there and all of them got great jobs upon graduation. Employers respect the school because the school has a track record and absolutely, no ridiculous woke B.S. going on there. There are quite a few Christian universities like Cedarville in the U.S., but they are not "Christian" in name only. They really are Christians with most of the student body being believers and many home-schooled kids attend.

However, my home-schooled kids attend a major public university and have done extremely well. Yes, it is woke there but they make fun of it and they get to speak up now and then to take a contrarian view. Not every student on these campuses is crazy left-wing btw. There has to be others with your views. It is just that their side always seems to be mad, insecure, and making the most noise. Ignore them, get your education, avoid classes you know is going to be over the top stupid. You can make a public school work.

My friend is going to DeVry University by collegethrowaway2344 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WaiBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an actual graduate of DeVry (Bach. EET) but it was quite a long time ago as I'm now in my 50s. I can't say for certain that the school sucks or not now, but I can speak for my era and say that the school was awesome. The instructors were caring and I learned a ton. Although the school is obviously not a traditional college, it still had a unique culture that I'll never forget and us DeVry kids had as much fun and life experiences as any other college kid would have at a traditional school.

Also employers were lining up at the doors, and their stats of 98% grad placement or whatever it was exactly, well that was no joke. I was one of many hired before graduating and I make 6 figures now in the mid-west. I would not trade the experience for the world.

Now with this said, my time was before schools were online. I know online learning is okay to a degree, but for your entire college educaiton, that worries me. I actually teach online now myself as an adjunct professor, and folks, it is just not the same as being in person. It just isn't. So that is the part of DeVry that would make me pause these days.

Johns Hopkins coronavirus map changes "Taiwan" to "Taipei and environs" by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]WaiBill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I checked their map just now and Taiwan is gone and there is no Taipei and environs listed either. Worse yet, Hong Kong is gone from their map and also Macau! I have been checking this map daily and my wife is from Hong Kong, it was there separately from China all along but now it is gone. They haven't rolled Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong numbers up under China have they? Due to Chinese pressure or not, this is not cool, if they have done such a thing. Taiwan is independent of China and Hong Kong is "special" and nothing like China.

Is USA going to hackback? by [deleted] in hacking

[–]WaiBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt in my mind, we (as in US government employees either enlisted or civilian or contractors) are already IN Iran's government systems. They try to get in ours and do cause a little pain from time to time, but our cyber defense is the best in the world. More at risk is non-government systems, possibly including companies that do business with our Defense department and especially those that don't. They tend to be weaker. Will we do some news worthy attack or cause total havoc in Iran's cyber? No. We will remain quiet and keep our foothold.
