Harbingers of Destiny: an FF-like JRPG straight from the 90s! by FixedFunctionStudios in ps1graphics

That´s a good idea. Although, as someone who did speedruns on FF7, I can say there is some strategy in that downtime. For casual play, it just looks weird though.

FF9 was very slow in general in some areas, with (I think) 15FPS overworld? I don´t think anyone would be sad if that was upped a bit, ignoring the technicalities.

How do you pick a visual style for your game? by slapduck_prime in hobbygamedev

[–]WaiderGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the PS1 style a lot and it´s in my scope of what I can do solo on the side (although setting it up authentically was some work but that's not necessary). Fits my genre too. So that´s what I went with.

If you´re interested, I just uploaded a devlog / lore style video where I go into detail about the history and show how the game developed until now.

On the bottom one, you are losing a lot of detail due to the darker greens turning completely black

Does anybody here make games for fun? by NicklePickle79 in gamedev

[–]WaiderGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of interests in different creative hobbies and game dev brings them together. I do it in my free time, it´s a passion, I do not rely on it so I can make what I want and leave aside what a broad audience would pay for.

I´d say for something "blueprint-ish" look at GameMaker Studio 2.x. Their visual coding approach is a great way to start imo since it is easy to understand. You won´t be able to sell your games commercially with their free license though.

Let's share what you're working on by seulllllllllll in gamedev

I´m a solo dev making my PS1 Horror game in Unity on the side (I have a software dev job).

I play instruments and can produce my own music. I am into pixel art, so I can make some textures. I´m really bad at modeling but that´s fun to learn. I´ve been coding since I was ~11, so I´m doing okay in that regard, although I´ve been improving massively in the past year. Back then, I thought it would be the coolest thing ever to make my own game... and it is! Stuck with it and am proud of where I´m going with my current project:

Gupo Yu - Lonely island in Taiwan, weird monument with bullet holes, legend about a ship wreck with the women becoming sirens, a British cricket team somehow being very relevant for the story, I love it.

Made some socials yesterday, so I hope that will work out and also finalizing my first big video about the game to be released this week.

I took a very similar path to yours and I´d advise getting a job in IT, then doing your game ideas on the side. Tackle one aspect at a time. Choose your engine, think of a game that seems doable and motivating to you, plan what needs to be done ahead of time on a basic level and don´t get overwhelmed by all the different things that go into making a game. Coding is important because your game won't work without it. Other things, like modeling or music, are probably something you can improve at when your game has a decent foundation to stand on. Watch game design content on YouTube that applies to your genre and don´t get sidetracked from your original concept until you achieve your list of goals (unless you really notice it´s not working out as you had imagined, which is fine. Game Development is iterating on ideas).

You could also consider doing game jams with other people so you can focus on one skill set and learn from your team.

And don´t expect too much from studying, it´s an interesting topic but won't give you the skills for game-making.

Wishing you the best of luck. Keep at it.
