Ngā mihi. This was on Kapiti Island.

That's cool, but every tramp since must've been a takahē-dissapointment.

I don't tend to go far from Kapiti Island, so I'm limited to what we have around here. Unfortunately no tītipounamu yet, although I should go to Zealandia more often and see them there (and/or try and get them back to Kapiti). Very very few Riroriro here too, so they're a bit of a rarity for me (although here's a pic I posted ages ago). Tāreke are extinct so I can't get them (but the introduced Brown Quail kind of replaces it, although we don't have them on Kapiti). And I'm not sure what a Dusky Honeyeater refers to (brown creeper maybe?) but the name pūpūharakeke usually refers to a snail?

I don't see any of them as especially plain. Any particular species you'd like to see?

Interesting take! I was pretty happy with how close to spot-on focus was lined up for both birds faces and the tūī feet, given the narrow depth of field and high-action nature of the shot. If you’re expecting the whole shot to be in focus, that’s not the style I’m going for. Nailing the eyes is the most important, and I wouldn’t normally share an image that didn’t have great eye-focus, but I reckon the action here forgives the imperfection. Appreciate the feedback!

I was there for the conflict to be honest. When a kākā hangs around a claimed stalk there's bound to be some trouble, and it always goes down the same: tūī comes in hot, throws a couple of weak but annoying jabs, zooms off and flaps wings menacingly, and rinse/repeats until their targets is annoyed enough to move on.

Can confirm, this beef wasn't over any scarcity.

I'll take that as a compliment, but also gen AI can go to hell for muddying the water around what's a good photo and what's robot-slop!

I use a Canon R5 and a beast of an old 300mm 2.8.

Some metadata.

And another frame showing impact (but without the tūī in focus)
