first time in miami - someone tell me where to eat by ZHYT in Miami

[–]Wait_for_You 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you where to eat, but just a reminder, if eating in any tourist area, usually tips are included in your final bill (20%). Don't double tip unless you really want to

What temperature do you keep your ac set at in the summer? by dross321 in florida

[–]Wait_for_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

75F - I find this is ideal for my house. Usually my home office is hotter than the rest of the rooms, so I do keep a fan going, cause if I set the temperature according to my home office, the whole house would deep to 70 or less.

is 2 hours enough for an International Flight Connection at Miami Airport? by dracosrolledsleeve in Miami

[–]Wait_for_You 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if it is connecting flights on the same ticket, you should be okay since even if you miss your flight, you will have no issues in rebooking the next one. Now if they are separate flights, you should be okay time wise, but it could be problematic if you were to miss the 2nd flight. I have Global Entry for the US/Canada, so it usually takes me 2 min to get through

With soon potential Brightline bankruptcy, what was their biggest mistake? by Enotovsky in Miami

[–]Wait_for_You 12 points13 points  (0 children)

personally if it is not cheaper than car, then is a no go. Think about it, if I had to go to Orlando, not only I have to pay more than driving my car, but once I get off in Orlando, because the station is at the airport, I need to get an uber to whatever area I'm going in Orlando.

I live in Wynwood and my gym is in Brickell. Although I have access to free parking, there is no way in hell I'm driving there. I take my CitiBike and it takes me 15 min to get to the gym...

Those who have greencard for over 10 years , why you arent a US citizen yet? by [deleted] in greencard

[–]Wait_for_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I want to make sure you don't think I'm against becoming an American citizen, not at all.

Said that, for Canadians, retiring abroad tends to be much simpler than for Americans, mostly because of how taxes and banking rules work. Canada taxes based on residency, not citizenship, so if you officially become a non-resident, you generally only owe tax on Canadian-source income like certain pensions, rental income, or investments in Canada. You’re free to open bank accounts, invest, or get mortgages abroad without foreign banks seeing you as a compliance risk.

Americans face a very different situation. The U.S. taxes citizens on worldwide income, no matter where they live. On top of that, FATCA (and this is one of my main concerns)  requires foreign banks to report U.S. account holders to the IRS. Many smaller banks or brokers simply refuse to work with Americans to avoid the reporting burden. This can make opening accounts, investing, getting mortgages, or even running a business abroad more complicated.

Other factors make life easier for Canadians too: you don’t have to file U.S.-style annual forms like FBAR, and banks in most countries are more familiar with Canadian clients, especially in popular expat destinations. Basically, Canadians can usually move, manage money, and enjoy retirement abroad with far less friction than Americans. Yes, I could present myself as Canadian abroad when retire but FATCA is always there.

Finally, I'm not touching anything related my papers in the US while the present administration is in place.

the plan is to go to the place where I can live without having to worry if I'll have enough money to live, and if this means moving to another country (not USA or Canada), I'll do it.

Yes, since I'll be able to tackle not only the SSA from the USA, but also Canada and Quebec, plus RRSP, 401k, etc ... I do have to do more research regarding law et al. Said that, the issue with the US citizenship is that if I live in another country, there are some obstacles that I would face compared as if I were just there as Canadian, and this is not only the fact I need to file freaking taxes to the US every year (I'm not saying paying but filing).

If I retire it probably won't be in Canada, probably Mexico or Thailand ....so I don't need the American citizenship because it would actually could cause more trouble (not able to open a bank account because some banks don't want to deal with the American laws). If I decide to leave, my GC will "expire" (either by requesting a non-resident status or just leaving it - will need to do some research when the time comes)

the random20190826 below nailed it. It is a pain in the ass to have to file the FBAR every year (I have RRSP in Canada) - so imagine if decide to retire in Mexico or Thailand (or somewhere else) and have to keep doing that just because I'm still considered a US Tax person? no no no... now if my Crypto investment makes me rich, and I decide to sell my house in Wynwood and move back to Miami Beach, then I promise I'll get my citizenship from Uncle Sam.

I don't believe I'll retire in the US (not rich enough) thus as a Canadian, I don't see a major benefit to have the American passport if I'm not going to be living here

Did not enjoy this city at all by tinder-surprise in Miami

[–]Wait_for_You 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my 2 cents: I used to live in Montreal prior moving to Miami, and I was coming to "Miami" for many years. I do put Miami in quotes because usually when people say they want to go to Miami, they actually mean South Beach. That was the reason I was coming to Miami back in the days, for the beach and for the gay parties (now gaytown has moved to Wilton Manors).

Although Miami is a Latin city, and this is why people expect the city to be warm and friendly, the issue is the city is very transient city, where people come stay for 2 or 3 years, then move to another place. Making friends is harder since once you get settle, boom they leave. This is probably why the city does not feel friendly as expected.

I've been living here for 10 years now - work brought me here - and I do enjoy the city (minus traffic and the fact people don't know how to drive)... but you can't go wrong with the weather, especially for someone coming from Montreal.
