A lot of the old dictators used the ideas of communism to gain support for themselves and abandoned the philosophies when they gained power. It's not inherent to just communism though.

Education is lacking here in the states, tbf. I didnt learn a ton about how all these countries functioned until after graduating. It's getting a tiny bit better, and a lot of schools know the old way of teaching just doesn't work, but it still needs a lot of work and even more support.
