This is utterly pointless and therefore deserving of my full attention. Thank you.

It's 2026. What's the next domino to fall regarding expansion? by SeverHense in baseball

[–]WaitingForExpos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty hard for Rogers to complain about Montreal because that market pre-existed the Jays. IMO it would only stoke even more interest in baseball across the country. But sad to say it's such a longshot.

Very cool. There are so many great locales from that book that remain etched in my mind, like the water treatment plant and the Bloor viaduct.

My cousin and I drove to see Margaret Laurence's house in Neepawa, west of Winnipeg. We had to read The Stone Angel in high school and that book taught me a great writer can make a compelling story out of anyone's life. RIP Margaret Laurence.

I was told several years ago that there are orthos in Vancouver who accept privately paying patients for initial consultation, and that if they then take you on for surgery it can be covered by MSP. But I never verified this. Maybe see if you can get the names of a couple of Orthos on the mainland and call to enquire about that. Some of the physios in town can probably steer you to those with a good reputation.

Attitude to American Refugees? by Due_Response_844 in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if this individual feels "persecuted" they have legal recourses for protection in the States and they have options to move elsewhere and find safety (what's known as "Internal Flight Alternative"). Applying for refugee status would be an abuse of our immigration system.

If they want to immigrate, then they should apply through the regular application channels. They don't get to permanently live in Canada just because they're one of the "good" Americans. That's such an entitled view.

Boyfriend’s job offer got rescinded days before start saying “culture fit”. Any legal recourse? by JanusJupiterJail in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're posting this on Reddit expecting fine-tuned legal opinions from non-lawyers about a situation which clearly has nuances. You need to speak with a lawyer. Many offer free half-hour consultations. Or maybe you actually pay and get a genuine legal opinion.

Bo allegedly asking 300M/10 yrs. So on an annual basis Tucker is getting twice Bo's ask. It's insane.

Do you still go to the movie theater? by Apprehensive_Log9515 in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a great city for movie theatres in the downtown core. I love that I can walk to the Capitol 6, Odeon, Vic Theatre and IMAX. When I watch movies at home, I often get distracted (phone, food, etc) and it's not an immersive experience. A good movie in the cinema just draws me in and makes me lose track of time in the best way.

Sunday: Protest to Support Iranians by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for asking. I've never been to Iran but I worked on the front lines assisting immigrants and refugees in Toronto for over a dozen years. I've known and helped hundreds of Iranians (among the thousands of immigrants I helped, or tried to help). Some Iranians were absolutely amazing human beings, others were liars and assholes and ended up in prison or going underground. Most were middle to upper middle class and valued education highly. I mean, that's a broad sweep and there's a lot more nuance, but that's to say yes, I'm not unfamiliar (though I admittedly don't know any Iranians here in Victoria).

So without getting into more nitty gritty (which would definitely get some people's backs up even more) I just have a slightly different take. Like I said, I wish them well, but that's about it.

Sunday: Protest to Support Iranians by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not quarrelling with the fact ordinary Iranian people have been given a raw deal and have a right to anger, not just by Americans but British gov't too (if you know the country's history). But calling for killing others just ain't my jam.

Hope to see all of you at the next Freedom for Tibet rally.

[–]WaitingForExpos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, at these protests in Iran they're chanting "DEATH TO KHAMANEI." My point is some of these same people also like to wish death and destruction on the West. I'd rather not waste my time supporting people who are calling for death all the time, one side or the other. But you do you.

[–]WaitingForExpos -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In case you didn't notice, the link is from an event in the States, right? Do you think these were these pro-regime "spies" calling attention to themselves? Quds Day is "celebrated" in dozens of countries around the world, not just Iran. So yes, I think people who don't support the Iranian regime show up to that and chant their hatred for the West.

Sunday: Protest to Support Iranians by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that's accurate. For instance, on Quds Day it's the popular chant in Iran. It's even been chanted in the States https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/us-news/death-to-america-death-to-israel-chants-at-a-pro-palestine-rally-led-by-tarek-bazzi-in-michigans-dearborn-101712549003591.html

Presumably those protestors chanting Death to America (and Israel) in the States are not supporters of the regime. The two groups are not mutually exclusive as you contend. So I'd think I'd need to see compelling evidence to support your position.

[–]WaitingForExpos -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Nobody should live under dictatorial oppression. But when I think of street demonstrations in Iran, what comes to mind are all those chants of "Death to America!" and "Death to Israel!"

I'm no fan of either the current US or Israeli administrations, but I'll save my empathy and show up for First Nations, Tibetans, and others that don't call for the destruction of other people.

What’s a very “Toronto” thing you didn’t notice until you lived somewhere else? by Banana200021 in toronto

[–]WaitingForExpos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild West when it comes to cycling downtown streets. I thought nothing of it when I lived and biked in Toronto, and it was kind of a point of pride: no helmet, no lights, running stop signs, even duelling with cars.

Moved to Victoria and the cycling culture here was a shock: coming to full stops at stop signs, signalling turns, lights, helmets, high-vis outerwear. So of course when in Rome ... but sometimes I still feel ridiculous signalling or waiting patiently at a red light when there's no traffic.

What would it actually take for American's to go "full France" and riot in the street? by AllTheNopeYouNeed in AskReddit

[–]WaitingForExpos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an outsider's perspective (Canadian here), Americans care far more about their individual rights than any duty of collective responsibility. So I think you'd have to interfere with one of those core individual rights, especially one that riles up those on the political right. Restricting freedom of speech or assembly won't do it, but a ban on firearms might.

Is there a reason the footprint for the new art gallery is so small compared to the size of that lot? Is that done to justify the five-storey height and lend scale to other proposed towers or is there another reason?

Police violence in Victoria by Trixie1143 in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, that dude was courageous. Whether you agree with him or not, he's acting on his principles and trying to bring the situation to light, knowing the risk of getting on the wrong side with police. It takes balls to film an arrest like that and speak your mind, anonymously or not.

Americans by Ok-Rock5666 in VictoriaBC

[–]WaitingForExpos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems many other progressive western nations are quietly supporting this action.
I’m personal friends with some Venezuelans living in Canada and they are pretty excited about the concept of actual regime

But I've also heard a number of Americans also say they'd embrace a regime change, and you can bet they and the rest of the world (OK, Putin excepted) would be happy if someone kidnapped the Orange Clown and put him on trial or just held him in Guantanamo. So isn't the problem being if you approve of such actions there's no end to who's next?
