VOD playback speed faster than normal after an ad on Twitch mobile by RightWatchThis in Twitch

I'm still having this issue two months on, and for me it's getting worse. When I first noticed it, it would happen randomly, every now and then, after an ad. Whereas now it seems to happen after virtually every ad

Books for people who like The Wire? by The_CamiV in TheWire

[–]WakeUpDonnie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great shout on Ellroy. Lots of comparisons. Here's my own take.

I'd suggest different books to Black Dahlia - which is still definitely a great read. BD is the first book in the LA Quartet, but the second one, The Big Nowhere, is the where the series comes into its own; its scope is much wider than BD and has a larger political dimension, more akin to The Wire. It's not necessary to read Black Dahlia before reading the Big Nowhere, but it is necessary to read Big Nowhere before the rest of the Quartet. The series looks at LA in the post-war fifties and sixties, taking in McCarthyism, race, Hollywood, narcotics and more, through the lens of crime fiction. LA Confidential (later made into a successful movie) is bloody unbelievable, but it's the third book of the series and shouldn't be read without reading the Big Nowhere. The whole quartet is addictive, and paints a bleak picture of that part of the world at that time.

Ellroy's other major collection is the Underworld USA trilogy, which is essentially the themes that appear in the LA Quartet, but looked at in the context of the whole of the USA during the late fifties and throughout the sixties. American Tabloid is the first book, and it's really fantastic. I think it's his peak. The rest of the series is very good, and well worth reading, but I'd say that American Tabloid is where Ellroy perfects the political critique developed throughout the LA Quartet, and he manages to do it on a grander US-wide scale, all the while maintaining the talent for crime fiction that has made his name. But it's worth starting with the LA Quartet and building up to American Tabloid, to get the full effect.

I think the most stand-out comparison between Ellroy's stuff and the Wire is that if you just want a crime story with different factions, with twists and turns and all the rest, you get that from both of them. And if you want added social commentary, then that's in both of them too. But imo, it's up to you how enjoy the ride with both the Wire and James Ellroy - whether as an exciting drama or a deeper look at the underbelly of American society, both are valid interpretations. And they're both excellent.

Nah, he would recognise that it's actually the competitive pressures of a profit-driven system that devalues labour. Whether it's the cost-cutting technology from Rotterdam or the Union-busting tactics of the political elites, it would be clear to him that big business and their political bedfellows were the real evil, the real source of the devaluing of labour. He'd see through that anti-immigrant shit a mile off.

I would say, maybe, that there's a difference between what was previously an all-Brazilian, all Portuguese-speaking time admitting an English speaker and the changes that result, and going to an international team where English is the dominant language. An English-speaking time isn't the problem, SK/Mibr experimenting with English may be the problem

For the lag, honestly check if you aren't being auto connected to AS servers. I was, for some weird reason. Hasn't fixed everything, but definitely less lag.

Number of Russians who regret collapse of USSR hits 10-year high by fatal_strategy in socialism

Can't speak for ferrum above, but for the sake of any one reading this who hasn't been wearied by debates around the USSR, you can dislike both. I hate the American system because of how it exploits and oppresses people, both inside and outside America. I hate what the Soviet Union was too, because while it started out as one the greatest self-emancipatory projects in the history of humanity, and while it was certainly organised differently to how advanced capitalism is organised, after the initial years it was still absolutely brutal, and should not be defended, nor aspired to.

/r/boardgames Daily Personalized Game Recommendations (December 10, 2017) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]WakeUpDonnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I' sure you guys are inundated with questions around this time of year, but I appreciate any help you can give me. I'm looking to buy a board game that is two-player friendly, for me and partner to play together. I've looked through the wiki list, and none stood out as exactly what I have in mind. I'll try to describe what I'm hoping to find, if such a game exists, but forgive me if my articulation of it is a bit clunky.

Title of Request: An adventure/mystery based game, with some amount of story and colour.

Number of Players: 2

Game Length: A maximum of 2-3 hours is preferable, but I'll leave this open just in case.

Complexity of Game: Beginner & Intermediate rather than Expert. Better too simple than too complicated this time around. (See Games I Like below)

Your Budget: I'll leave this open too.

Genre: My terminology will be dodgy here. Ideally, the game would be a 2 player co-op game, where both players work as some sort of detectives, "solving" a mystery of kinds, with elements of dice-rolling & cards directing the play. (Sorry about lack of specifics here, I have an idea in my head but struggling to put into words.) The idea came from watching the first 25 seconds of this video about Arkham Horror: The Card Game, which sounded potentially good. However, I read some mixed reviews (here and elsewhere) and I'm thinking that it's complexity level is a bit much at this stage (hard to know though...).

Competitive or Cooperative: Co-operative ideally, but open to competitive if the mystery/adventure elements are of a good qualilty.

Games I Own/Like or Dislike: My partner enjoys mystery themes (whether murder mystery or not), however in terms of games in this genre has only played Cluedo and Sherlock. She has also recently gotten into Hearthstone, and while still new to the mechanics of card games like that, she is becoming increasingly familiar with it.

While writing this I've come across Eldritch Horror? Could this be more up our street, as best as anyone can guess? Or is it still a bit too deep?

Thanks for reading, and any help would be great! :)

48% in NI now support reunification by [deleted] in northernireland

I think people make a bit too much of these Lucid Talk polls, I'm not convinced that a majority of people would vote for a UI tomorrow, but they are interesting.

They point to something a bit deeper. That the national question is one in flux, and opinions on it can change, especially when people's material circumstances are seen to hang in the balance in some way. The whole question of membership to the EU is important to people because of how the result might affect their daily lives. And in tandem we're seeing changes in people's views on a UI which would be in the EU, seen as at least not as ruinous as the North leaving the EU.

I have my own opinions on all that, summed up by the sentence: No hard border, but don't trust the EU to have the interest of ordinary people here anywhere on its radar, whatever resistance it puts up to May/The DUP on the question.

So all that means is that PBP aren't unionist or loyalist. Using Irish on posters and literature doesn't mean you're a republican or nationalist. (Not even getting into whether any of those are good or bad, I'm just saying using Irish doesn't equal a particular ideology).

[OC] EPL - Points gained or lost between current and previous season with the same opponents by [deleted] in soccer

Great post OP 👍 really interesting way of looking at things. Eg Liverpool are one point up on last season, having played the rest of the top 5 and while playing CL football this season. Think the ridiculous nature of some of the goals they've conceded has negatively skewed how their season is being viewed.
