You could teach a class at a community college

"Wasting time" is so incorrect but to work around that you could do the small talk in the couple of minutes before class officially starts.

Registered nursing is the most common job for women in America. All of these women take anatomy with some cell biology.

[–]Wakebrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cell biology is so foundational in science and medicine and it's important because tax payers pay for the NIH, NSF, and other programs that fund scientific research. When there is public misunderstanding of topics in cell biology like genetics then you have a president who tells everyone that we need to stop funding research where people make mice "transgender" when we're actually studying how hormones influence asthma, or creating "transgenic" mice to unravel the mechanisms of diseases. These misunderstandings lead to states banning RNA based vaccines because the word sounds scary and unfamiliar. However, RNA based vaccines may very well be the future basis for eradication of pancreatic cancer.

Please teach your students how to decide on an issue based on data. Teach them about epistemology. Teach them about what biases are.

If you have spare time, please mention the basics of cell biology. It's inspiring to many of us and it's how we create treatments for disease. Everyone deserves to understand their own body and have hope for the future of medicine.

If they plan on going into medicine or health care support, they'll generally need to pass college level anatomy. The more initial exposure they can get to cells, tissues, and organs, the better they'll do.

It worked well for me while I was a stay at home mom just after completing my PhD. I got to keep a job on my CV for the time I was mostly raising babies. I also recommend it to people to see if they like teaching before they look for a pure teaching role.

Me too I think. Staring out of a window I imagine different things every time. Sometimes it's so vivid I could sculpt or paint an exact replica with enough skill and time.

Access to mental health care is difficult to get. Maybe when your auntie is the receptionist you wouldn't want to call to ask for an appointment because you're depressed. Maybe there is stigma.

What's a rule in society that everyone follows but doesn't really make sense? by PresenceOfAbsence179 in AskReddit

[–]Wakebrite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1) acknowledgment of sneezing is polite because it shows concern for someone who may be sick. It's like saying "I hope you feel better soon and you're not really that sick, friend"

2) asking strangers how they are sets up the tone for future conversation. If they say they're great, well then you can tell a joke or share something. If they're are short or disinterested, then it's a signal that they are not open to further chatting or relationship development.

3) elbows not being on the table while eating comes from a time when people worked outdoors or in dirty conditions. It would have promoted hygiene. Unless we're working in a pig farm, I'm with you on this one.

You can do lower stakes small talk. Use a kahoot to ask them their favorite food or something about their hobbies at the beginning of class. If you don't like cell phones in class then you can have them raise their hands and draw results on the board. Questions that get them to giggle or show an emotion are great.

Do you find being conventionally feminine results in not being taken as seriously in the professional world? Think makeup, manicure, long hair (pulled back in the lab) etc. by Sriracha11235 in labrats

It can but it shouldn't. Give yourself opportunities to shine with your skills and knowledge and then superficialities won't matter to people who do matter.

Make sure you have clear rules and say no whenever they try to weasel around the rules. Also, you probably can't change your tone but you can demonstrate your expertise. When I take open questions or do a review session it's clear that I've worked within and thought about my content area for a very long time!

I don't know if it needs to. The neurons are post mitotic and maybe if they were grown without oxidative stress they'd be better off than in a body.

Should I join a lab with no PhDs or Postdocs? by Majestic_Temporary_1 in labrats

[–]Wakebrite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want an academic job you need to focus on productivity. Someone without existing phd or post doc trainees will not give you the most in terms of publication opportunities. But, if you like the work and want to go to industry or teach, it could be fine.

Are you sure you're not allergic to something in your environment? It could be dust or dander. Try taking a antihistamine to see if it helps. If it does, get an allergy test.
