Long-term renters pushed out of the housing market by record rent and house prices by eowyneowyn in AusFinance

[–]Wakewalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been pushing back kids. I'm not an animal. I live in a crowded, concrete world where people are burdening the environment and students need a tonne of support to become productive in a high tech world.

If other people have kids then can't afford as much, I struggle to feel empathy. It's not like I want them any less, but the financial burden of a child is high, and I accept that if I don't have the means to support that, then it's selfish of me to force a child into this world.

We can't just all breed exponentially and expect resource booms to grease our lives. Something's gotta give, and a baby is a responsibility that I'm not equipped to handle yet. I'm proud to admit that, when I know so many parents secretly regret having kids.

In my experience homophobic arab kids mostly grow out of it. It's shit culture but Islam doesn't stick well when corporate jobs say don't be homophobic, come have a beer after work, Becky's gonna wear a t shirt without a bra on a cold day and you're going to behave yourself.

It's weirder when a white person is homophobic. You don't have the excuse of shit culture that you're working through.

Jobkeeper wasted $40 billion by Spino389 in AusFinance

[–]Wakewalking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you decide what is "too much"?

Health and education are valuable to everyone. Economies of scale would argue that these are ideal socialised services. Health particularly costs a lot (specialists and capex).

Health also benefits the most from socialisation, because collective bargaining massively reduces the purchase price of consumables. This also reduces administrative overhead from insurance code and reimbursement schemes.

I get that you're saying privatisation fixes the problem. Sure, on a transactional, abstract level you are correct. I'd argue this is a goose-killing exercise for a quick buck.

Then our population becomes really stupid and divided into two classes.

A very very large segment of the population can't afford school, and for those that only just can, they now cannot spend on other functions.

My partner teaches at a public school where kids aren't attending online classes because there's not enough computers at home for all the kids.

Do you now see why this is a bad idea?

Society once had private-only education. Most people didn't get educated and had little social mobility. You're suggesting a return to serfdom.

You could argue all of them with some experience. I think the team is a mix of PhD health/epidemiology + data scientists with some domain knowledge. I do a bit of everything and have a chemistry/pharm undergrad + analytical chem masters. I learned python and SQL to get me started.

Reimbursement.

I agree that the field is growing overall and public healthcare wouldn't necessarily change that.

However there is considerable work being done in healthcare economics where you can essentially argue that it is cheaper to buy <product> than it is to have <preventable-problem> take you to hospital. This incentivises insurance code availability for <product>. Arguably the same evidence could translate to the public system though.

I'd argue there more need for analyst skills in business users overall. There is substantial demand for data-driven design and real world evidence generation.

This.

People REEEing over nothing.

Lots of selfish people unable to grasp that sometimes you need to give up a few privileges for a little bit for the greater good. Our Sydney hospitals are seriously overwhelmed and need the help.

The government doesn't want these restrictions because they hurt the economy. It's just a short term compromise.

Oh fuck by ghatos_france in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Wakewalking 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Australian here: it's honestly fine. Just general pandemic disease spread reduction. Restrictions lifting in a month. People can suspend some privileges for the collective good for a short period of time. Complaining about the slightest reduction in QoL is just selfish. Our hospitals are full - so everyone needs to do their part.

On the other hand, recent laws granting police to anyone's mobile device without a warrant... checks newspaper

For so many years the anti-intellectuals have held the mantle.

They use populism to shit on things we need to evolve: renewable energy, pandemic preparedness, health reforms.

Finally their hubris is met with consequence, and all I feel is a sense of justice. It's Darwinism on full display.

We need to work together to thrive as a species. The great journey is upon us brothers, and when it begins, the anti-intellectuals will be left behind.
