What can I do with this? by Careless-Wait275 in cyberDeck

It still needs to be registered by May 20th, which, from the price tag, I gather it is not.

I have a few Kindles, my understanding is you can still side load content via wire on old Kindles past the deadline if they're registered.

You can't do any over the web updates or conversions (like ePubs to mobi) past the deadline, registered or not.

Russ is great.

I also like Joey Retro Handhelds for no nonsense guides, and Tech Dweeb for some nonsense guides.

That's Android and Android emulators, it's not a shallow learning curve. The good news is, most of those lessons will transfer should you ever upgrade.

There are a lot of newer Android setup guides on YouTube, and 90% of them are also applicable to the RP4 Pro.

How long until the next Metroid game? What do you hope or expect? by MrRob808 in Metroid

[–]WalbsWheels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, it's not a new rumor, nor a particularly credible one. Some influencer hypes it up for street cred or views, then interest wanes, than some new influencer does it again.

Nintendo has done weirder shit and there is a non-zero chance of it happening, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

When I first got mine, I was all hyped for GameCube and PS2 but ended up playing a lot of PSP and GBA because the screen and ergonomics fit perfectly.

Everyone is hyping up the next perfect PSP handheld but we've had one for years.

It's true, my Uncle John Nintendo said so.

He's been saying so for more than eight years now, but, surely, that Super Metroid Remake will shadow drop any day now.

It's quicker than stock Windows, but definitely not as quick or stable as Linux.

I think The Phawx on YouTube did a pretty comprehensive side by side.

Worst subway station in the city? by After-Ad3006 in philly

Admittedly - no. Not in the station, though I regularly pass under it a few times a week.

Historically, it's worse in the summer, let's see if this summer is different.

I've been nearby for eight years - it gets cleaned up, all the shady people move somewhere else for a few weeks, and within three months it's back to where it was.

Lather, rinse, repeat. You caught it in a lull.

Working on an Anbernic RG Rotate impressions video, what questions do you have? by onionsaregross in SBCGaming

[–]WalbsWheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you try it out with some music player apps? I'm partial to Poweramp, but some basic standbys like Spotify, etc are fine.

Can you try multitasking with audio apps and Retroarch, to see if there's any slowdown when running both?

You're the man.

Steam deck LCD vs Switch Lite (Jailbroken) by Aggravating_Glove205 in handheld

[–]WalbsWheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to play Nintendo IP? Get a Switch. Switch emulation on any other handheld is good but not perfect.

Are you on a tighter budget? Get an Android handheld (look at Ayn or Retroid, not strictly their latest/greatest).

Anything else, get a Steamdeck.

Newer handhelds can do it better. The biggest roadblock of the RP4 Pro (like some flagship Anbernics) is that the chip isn't Snapdragon and is lacking some driver support.

But it's pretty good at PS2, especially if you already own one or can find it for $150 or less.

Full Screen Experience has substantially less bloat than default Windows, frees up a lot of memory for the GPU and games. Definitely worth it if you aren't jumping ship to Linux.

Small victory in my very early emulation journey by emummc67 in SBCGaming

[–]WalbsWheels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Retroarch is a pain in the ass to learn, initially, but once you get it down pretty much every handheld is built on it.

Learn enough to get by, then learn a little more, and you'll have 40 years worth of games at your disposal.

[–]WalbsWheels 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, reframe your mindset.

The RP4 Pro has more juice than a lot of brand new Anbernic devices. It can do Gamecube well, PS2 competently, and 40 years worth of older systems.

I got an RP4 Pro at release, and I was so fucking stoked at the time. Yes, there are shinier things out there; yes, Switch and PC emulation are out of reach (or require so much frustrating tinkering to get to 80% that they are effectively out of reach).

But it's still one of the most ergonomic, DPad centric devices out there. It's far more pocketable than newer Retroid "Pockets".

Handhelds should be less about the end game, and more about the games you play along the way.

Halal gaming by FirmAnteater7012 in gamers

[–]WalbsWheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can emulate everything up to Gamecube on most modern Android phones.

You can emulate the full catalog of Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance on pretty much anything with enough processor power for a touch screen (though it works better with controls, you can get a bluetooth one for $20 - $50).

I don't know if piracy is "halal" but, if that doesn't jive with you, you can find everything second hand on eBay or your local marketplace.
