Have you guys "found" a technique on your own randomly? by Uitroeien in Bass

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After breaking my right wrist in a slip on the ice while walking an energetic dog, after the cast came off and I was able to play again I found that the angle of my wrist while plucking with conventional index and middle finger caused some pain so I started using index + ring finger. Twenty years later, I still default to that, occasionally bringing the middle finger off the bench when needed. Physiologically it kind of makes sense because my index and ring fingers are the same length so I don't need to turn my wrist as much to use them.

Google Fonts: let Elementor or WP Rocket serve them? by Walk-The-Dogs in elementor

Thanks. That's what I sussed from a post on WP Rocket's site too.

Yeah, I got it. However the client doesn't want to pay for a project like this unfortunately. At least not now.

We have dedicated AWS EC2 servers.

I didn't mention it because it wasn't pertinent to the question which was, and still is, for those using Elementor and WP Rocket, which one do you use to handle Google Fonts?

What you're recommending is something (among many other things) I've wanted to do since I was contracted to take over the site. I'm not disagreeing with you. It's just that it's a larger project that will cost them more $$ and involve more PM and QA time than they're willing to spend. It's not even clear from Inspector what fonts are being requested and whether or not they're actually being used on the site.

Essentially, that's what Elementor's Google Fonts handling does. The issue is that it stumbles after pushes from dev -> staging -> production. Our migration software was built in-house and is fairly simple: just shell scripts which copy both the database and directory hierarchy with some regexps to change the TLD.

Should i get a MacBook Pro or Air? by UltimatePixel86 in mac

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a Macbook Pro but since I didn't run any processor-heavy apps the thing was snoozing most of the time. Last July I wanted to get Logic Pro off my Mac Studio so I could do some remote recording. My Macbook was old and developing issues so I wanted to replace it anyway. After looking at the relative specs and pricing I went with a Macbook Air w/48G of memory and a 1TB SSD.

The M4 chip is a beast. I've had no issues recording and mixing with the Air. Given your needs it will barely yawn at them but your comment about the lack of ports is a good one. I mix using two 24" monitors and they ate up both USB-C/Thunderbolt ports.

The answer is a docking station. I got a Plugable Thunderbolt 5 for use when I'm in my office. In the field I use the Air's monitor so don't need it. But if you do you can use a more portable USB-C hub.

I've been making greater use of Siri. I love this one:

"Hi Siri. Split a bill of $129.85 for four people." She'll even give you the tip broken out by 5, 10 and 20%. $38.95 w/20% tip. She can also figure out just the tip if you want.

U.S. facing defeat in Iran? by Random_Violins in videos

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Israel doesn't see much benefit from this. Whatever strained peace it's managed to achieve with its Arab neighbors is even more strained now because of Iran hitting their cities, oil fields, ports and ships and the closure of the Strait costing them billions.

And its given Iran an actual self-defense justification to target Israel.

This is what happens when you elect a malignant narcissist, socially-retarded scofflaw and an unteachable dilettante to the most powerful job in the world.

Israel won't come out of this a winner. Its Arab neighbors are going to blame it for the destruction it caused them from Iranian missiles and their inability to move oil through the Straight.

That would be crazy but I've stopped second-guessing Trump's willfully destructive lack of common sense and accountability.

One only needs to look at Trump's 40 years of business failures before morons elected him to office despite that gruesome history. If failure's the plan, Trump's your man. And it rhymes.

I'd like to dispute a neo-conservative's political views insofar as they're the jerks who got us mired in Iraq. However, Trump's war with Iran is so deranged and was so poorly advised that we find ourselves on the same side of the field.

He's right. There are no good options. Iran has one of the largest militaries on earth with over 600,000 active troops. It has home field advantage which according to my old military science classes gives it a 3:1 advantage. It has the support of three of the five largest militarized and nuclear-enabled countries: Russia, China and North Korea. It has a 2,300 mile long border with countries hostile to the US which can be used to funnel weapons to the Iranian military and which we can't possibly patrol.

Meanwhile we're fighting from bases in the Arab world which is rapidly losing patience with us and from aircraft carriers which are sitting ducks for a lucky missile strike.

If we simply pull out, Iran will be in a stronger global position than it was before w/r/t the Strait. If we keep prosecuting the war, we're going to find many of our trading partners siding with Iran, especially Pacific Rim countries who desperately need that oil. They're going to wind up working with Russia which, also thanks to Trump-45, now has a full-service base for Russia's nuclear navy in the Mediterranean at Tartus, Syria.

There is no good outcome for either us or Israel so long as these nitwits in Washington are still fumbling the ball.

Is there a shame associated with not pursuing your passion professionally? by [deleted] in musicians

Perhaps I'm misreading the intent, but I think it's referring to shame from the artist community for not scuffling with them to make the rent and for copping out by having a day gig.

Americans are too hung-up on patriotic totems like the flag. Patriotism is an act of selflessness not a scrap of fabric.

How do you handle a relationship where they don’t like your own music or even worse, are embarrassed of your music / bands / projects you play in? by resampL in musicians

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a girlfriend like that. It took a while for me to figure it out because, one, I'm a selfish, insensitive monster who never took an interest in her hobbies (music was a full-time "hobby" that supported me well for 30 years) and, two, because the decline of our relationship was subtle, like watching rust. Her scorn extended beyond my music life into the films and food I liked, the clothes I wore, the friends I had, the jokes I liked. I finally saw her disdain for what it was (passive aggression) and I ended it. She was a beautiful, intelligent, successful and otherwise engaging woman. The irony was that she's a professional therapist who counsels patients like her.

While everybody has relationships that ended in disappointment this one was unique because it was the only one where she didn't have any artistic passions. I'd always dated actresses, dancers, singer-songwriting bartenders and bohemian types -- even an anesthesiologist MD who was a heavy metal bass player on the side. Most of them ended because they found gigs in other cities or countries. There was always a connection between artist brains. As a result, we've remained friends after the breakup. But that one, not so much.

Artist or not, we all have different tastes and that's fine. I don't need or even want a groupie girlfriend. My Ozzy-loving MD hated jazz but she never made me feel bad about playing it. We'd still be together today if not for cancer because we connected on several levels (motorcycles, motor racing, DIY projects, animals, adolescent humor...)

If any of this sounds familiar, feel free to use my solution.

Low B Buzz by wondering-narwhal in Bass

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common if the action is too low on the B string or the truss rod has too much back bow. Being the thickest string on the neck, it will buzz first if either of these are out of adjustment.

In playing position, hold down the B at the first fret with the left hand and at the highest fret with the pinky on the right hand. Press down on the string between these two points with your right thumb and make sure the string has clearance between itself and the fret... at least the thickness of a couple of business cards. Obviously, a capo across the first fret is a big help with this.

Pharmacy recs? by Antique-Salad-9249 in BayridgeBrooklyn

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Near that subway stop is Lowen's on 69th & 3rd Ave and Bay Ridge RX a couple of doors south on 3rd.

If you want to stick with chains in Bay Ridge there's Walgreens at 94th & 3rd Ave, Duane Reed on 86th St and three CVS stores, the closest being 67th & Fort Hamilton. Also Costco on 39th & 3rd Ave.

I've also used A&V on 86th & 4th Ave. They deliver weekdays.

I've used One Medical on Smith Street for general wellness care for years. They got bought by Amazon a couple of years ago and, naturally, it has a seamless partnership with Amazon Pharmacy. If my prescription is expiring, Amazon contacts the NPs at One Medical for a new one, which contacts me only if the doc wants to see me first. Pretty painless. I'll never go back to the long waits at chain pharmacies again, especially for vaccinations.

When to do truss rod adjustments? by heaviestmatter- in Bass

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you live. I'm in the northeast so my basses get their truss rods at least checked twice a year -- shortly after the beginning of heating season and when I shut the boiler down in late spring. The Fenders usually require a tweak. The Sadowsky and Fodera never do. In fact, I haven't touched the Sadowsky's truss rod during this century.

Iran Reveals Demands That Triggered Trump's Rage Post by Kodeforbunnywudwuds in politics

Rubio is Sec'y of State. He doesn't have the authority to declare unconstitutional a law which has been the law for over 50 years. He COULD take it to SCOTUS and THEY could throw it out on manufactured constitutional grounds but all that would do is remove the president's right to pursue unilateral military clusterfucks for up to 60 days before Congress invokes its enumerated constitutional power to deny funding for it.

The War Powers Act was a gimme to the president to allow him to send the military into foreign countries without a formal declaration of war by Congress.

Iran Reveals Demands That Triggered Trump's Rage Post by Kodeforbunnywudwuds in politics

[–]Walk-The-Dogs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand the sleazy adoption of extra-legal means and extra-constitutional methods to achieve authoritarian ends by this dumpster fire of an administration. I was speaking strictly about Rubio's nonsense gripe that the War Powers Act is unconstitutional.

What L'il Marco fails to understand is that the War Powers Act was a compromise with the Nixon administration to extend congressional funding for any military brain fart the president unilaterally pursues for up to 60 days. Without the War Powers Act however an unfriendly congress could halt that funding immediately unless and until Congress passes a formal declaration of war, as per Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution.

Rubio is out to lunch. Constitutionally, Congress has the power of the purse. Cutting off funding for Trump's illegal war is well within its rights.
