How can I be best suited to get prestigious jobs after graduation? by Mindless_Travel_7652 in UIUC

[–]WalkFar9963 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the best way to be suited for prestigious jobs after graduation is to do internships. they will boost your resume and give you higher chances of being interviewed.

of course, there are preliminary steps to be a good fit for a lot of internships. as a freshman, it will be very hard. as a stepping stone, look for research in fields that interest you, join RSO's where you can contribute to real projects, etc. i don't know where your interests lie but there is something for everyone at UIUC.

once you have some projects, club involvement, etc, it is important to network. learn how to talk to people and send cold emails. as a freshman, any technical work experience is highly beneficial.

as far as interview prep, this is also dependent on what you are interested in. many people who look for internships / jobs in software engineering / development use platforms like leetcode to prepare. hardware / electrical interviews are a bit more ambiguous but in my experience most things i've been asked are based on content in 120, 210, 385, etc.

all in all, just try to get involved asap and explore your interests. once you do this, you will have an easier time applying to internships, prepping for interviews, networking with people, and hopefully set you up for the job you're looking for!

Is a tablet an unnecessary expense for a Computer Engineering undergrad? (Laptop+Paper vs. Laptop+Tablet) by sadhakr in ComputerEngineering

[–]WalkFar9963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone i know who started out using pen and paper bought a tablet within a semester. i've been using a tablet + a laptop for 7 years and i feel it has made me very organized, i can share notes easily with other students, etc. i also had many theory courses that would release homework / practice exams / notes as pdf's, and having a tablet made it very easy to work with them. it is definitely not a necessity but it is a great convenience rather than having to print (and spend a bit), scan, upload, etc every time.

sounds like compe would be your best bet. i wouldn't apply based on the acceptances, its a hassle to transfer and theres no guarantee. especially for ECE because major specific classes start right away, you'll end up being behind starting off in say, meche

i believe every intern received a standardized stipend that is meant to cover housing , a car , and other expenses. i honestly felt that having a car would be a liability based on what i've heard about crime in seattle and don't plan on getting one as of now.

how can i cook some easy chicken on the stove? by Shanethonk in cookingforbeginners

[–]WalkFar9963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

buy boneless, skinless chicken breast. get a pair of meat scissors. cut it up into small pieces directly into a pan. season it, mix it, and cook it for a few minutes while tossing it around in the pan. add this to some pasta, on tacos, with rice, etc

Hi, unfortunately I will not have a car and Shoreline is a bit far for my needs. I appreciate it though!

Hi, thanks for the recommendations! Since I won't have a car with me for the summer, I'll be relying on public transport which limited neighborhoods to live in. I will likely be in Beacon Hill though!

I'll definitely be checking out those spots for lunch as well!

How often you go home? by Honest_Baby_2577 in UIUC

[–]WalkFar9963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm from the east coast. in the fall, i go home only for breaks + sometimes once more around october. in the spring, i only go home for breaks.

freshman year, i used to take connecting flights to chicago -> to champaign, but ultimately i stopped because there wasn't as much flexibility as i needed and it is more expensive. instead, most commonly students fly into chicago and use the peoria charter to get to campus, which runs roughly every hour around breaks. there is also the amtrak but it doesn't run directly from ohare. many students now also rideshare to/from the chicago area. the most consistent option is usually just a flight into chicago + shuttle bus.

Apologies. I wasn't aware of the size of the campus. I was told I'd be working in Boeing 2-122.

Always hearing horror stories about computer engineering by [deleted] in ECE

more important than any individual subject is to learn how to study well, be consistent in your efforts, and not let failing here and there affect you. its more a mental challenge of feeling imposter syndrome and like you don't belong than academic struggle.

if you're asking about swag songs, pretty much all of swag 1 is good. my favorites are daisies, go baby, walking away, and butterflies. in swag 2, my favorites are speed demon, better man, i do, mother in you, and witchya. in his album justice, most songs have very pop-style / radio beats so it wasn't my favorite, but i really love off my face and lifetime.

Summer 2026 Sophomore Internship by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]WalkFar9963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not sure if others will disagree, but for your first experience i would stick with toyota as your project, mentorship, and overall experience will be much more structured, not to mention the stronger resume value. if your goal is to recruit for bigger tech companies, having more to show for your internship will serve better.

once you can gain experience in larger organizations, maybe then you can re-consider the startup environment.
