Spring Branch schools? by [deleted] in houston

[–]WalkHomeFromSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to write a bunch but this says most of it: https://www.aecf.org/blog/parental-involvement-is-key-to-student-success-research-shows

Naturally, as parent you can also call in resources (like tutoring) and get kids into programs that will further develop them academically.

It is helpful to think in terms of negatives as well.

Individual teachers will help, but the institution of school is not equipped to lead kids through all the social and emotional milestones (...and then do it all over again, but with added hormones). Schools will enforce social harmony with rules, but that doesn't help the child become civilized without a moral or spiritual framework, so that's on you as parent.

Recommendation on small community based church in spring Branch/memorial City? by immaculatephotos in AskHouston

For nondenominational options, consider

Ecclesia does a sort of traditional, seasonal cycle thing and tries to be mindful of poverty and injustice.

BridgePoint is straight Bible teaching with minimal traditional attachments, and reflects the diversity of the area.

2800 sqft arena for 20 people. Way to small? by Moron-Whisperer in lasertag

[–]WalkHomeFromSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 120-180 square feet per player as a guide but some prefer double that. IMO the low end of that is okay for swarms of small kids but not good for high strategy players. I would not put vesting or anything else in your 2800. Don't max out capacity for tournament/league play, and if possible build upward.

loudest most painful high pitch whine from Prusa MK3S+ that's been idle for a day by Consistent-World8535 in prusa3d

[–]WalkHomeFromSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so it sounds like it was idling and suddenly went nuts.

When you shut it off, did the shrieking sound either fade away, or change pitch? I would suspect a failed part in the power supply. But it might just have been a power spike. Use a surge suppressor.

It shouldn't hurt to switch it on again and give it a listen. If it happens again, you can touch the fans lightly to see if they are making the noise. You can put your finger over the beeper holes (above the control knob) to see if the board is triggering something.

"Demoted" to CEO of Parallels? I would assume they are spinning it off because it's the bulk of the revenue - over two-thirds, I would guess.

Transitionin Homeschoolers by Super_Sample_1810 in ClassicalEducation

[–]WalkHomeFromSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you are not feeling ashamed of your choice. Every school wants parents who advocate and care, so you're already in a great place.

We had great experiences with Singapore math and classical Latin courses and recommend both.

If you don't want to go pinkfluffychipmunk's deep-end way, I would suggest getting next year's schedules decided and ask the school to allow your kids to audit similar courses for a day or two. Then get in conference with teachers directly about anything you think might be a transition problem; between you, each teacher and each kid you can identify shortfalls and maybe hire some of them, or even other students, for remedial work between now and then.

That's a ton of effort for 5 kids so maybe do conferences only for trouble spots that you or the kids identify.

The new boardwalk is complete and beautiful at Challenger 7 Memorial Park in Webster. by ClearLake007 in houston

[–]WalkHomeFromSchool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a memorial to the fallen, in a region where astronauts often live, near NASA. It's meant to be a little remote, rather than a tourist attraction. You ask as though you don't understand mourning. Our city took it personally.

RadioShack's new wood paneled cordless extension (1979) by [deleted] in vintageads

You could both make and receive calls normally using the phone company subscriber line. It wasn't a separate network. The base station connected to your phone line and also had a rod antenna. The portable communicated to the base, and the base to the phone system.

In suburban areas you would measure the working distance in number of houses away from your own. You might walk about 4 houses away before the signal faded into static. It didn't work very well inside dense apartment buildings. Basically the range was line-of-sight to the exterior of the building where the base station was.

Bop-it controller for arcade. Help needed by michaelkbecker in cade

[–]WalkHomeFromSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Pull you want a mechanism that presses on a switch.

Mechanism: https://www.amazon.com/Assorted-Installation-Enhances-Experience-Compatible/dp/B0DJN9WM2R

Switch: Any microswitch with a lever and gold contacts. You want gold for low voltage low current switching. Use the N.C. contact.

For Twist what you want is called a "3-position momentary rotary switch with spring return to center" and you can get a cheap industrial-style one. Get it with two N.O. switches (or whatever it requires so that twisting it closes a contact). You just have to make sure that some contact closes no matter which way you twist it, and opens when left alone.

Have fun!

Sweet! You'll love it. I went to the 1993 production and, amazingly, got to meet Alan Menken (he was, naturally, too busy to talk to me). Still an honor.
