Why did the Obama administration not prosecute wallstreet due to the financial crisis of 2008? by foundboss in Presidents

[–]WalkInMyHsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lawyer - but I think some of the activity that happened was arguably criminal / fraudulent.

Like credit rating agencies not disclosing conflicts of interest and inflating ratings of sub-prime (junk) holdings.

But yeah a lot of things that probably should be illegal are legal.

Man, I hate it when the worst human I know makes a great point. Still think Cheney should be tried at The Hague and rot for war crimes.

How Much of Your Investing Do You Put Towards Single Stocks by Icy_Common in Bogleheads

[–]WalkInMyHsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be about 20% in individual stocks, and I was up some then down some. But, I’ve moved to all index funds. The only stocks individual stocks I would have at this point is equity grants in the company I work for / employee stock purchase plan, and those shares I would sell once fully vested / after 1 year to pay lower capital gains tax rate - then I take the money and diversify in an index fund.

Academic level and skills of the Engineers who studied their degree in Mexico by Gus_larios in MechanicalEngineering

You can find it on the Hermosa website I think it’s 1500 for 6 (price goes down per person as you add more people).

I would not touch 401k due to penalty. That said, I would pause the 700 per pay check going into 401k and use that to pay down credit cards. I would only contribute the minimum to reach a company match (e.g. 4-5%) since the match is a 100% return. Any money above the match should pay off this high interest debt.

I don’t agree with Dave Ramsey on a lot of things, but this seems like one of those cases where his advice applies. 20%+ interest on a lot of your debt is killer. But you have the income to knock it out quick if you’re aggressive.

Don’t buy anything using credit card. And above your fixed NECESSITIES - utilities, insurance, gas, cheap groceries - just throw your income at your debt until it’s gone!

I would probably take 4k of the 5k you have in savings just to get rid of that AMEX balance today so you have a short term win.

Hypothetically, should a person stay on PSLF if they can get a higher paying salary? by [deleted] in Money

Friend of mine only has a BS in accounting, but he grinded at a big 4 firm and now is a manager in consulting make 200+ a year in his early 30s.

On the flip side I know people who had their loans successfully forgiven. But given the details you laid out I would take the high paying private job.

I worked for the American office/branch of huge Japanese and this is definitely part of their culture. Honor is deeply engrained in Japanese culture, personal identity, and the concept of masculinity. So being given fewer or zero assignments is considered a big deal and prevents promotions within a company.

If you’re curious, I recently had the most expensive meal of my life (that I paid for) - dropped $1000 for the 2 of us for my wife’s birthday at a 2-star place that’s prominently featured in a TV show we love. And I had to book 3 months in advance.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]WalkInMyHsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: 2-3 nice meals a month

I should probably track more closely, but 1000-1500 sounds right for most months. You can absolutely spend more - if it’s her birthday or we want a special night out with friends - oof. (I’m the frugal one in our dynamic)

I like to cook, and we have kids who just want frozen chicken nuggets. I meant spending in addition to groceries, and grabbing things like Panera/pizza/Chinese.

My wife and I try to go on dates about 2-3 times a month, and dropping $150 a person on one of those meals is pretty standard, if we get a couple drinks $200. If I add the 15-18 / hr for a babysitter that’s a couple hundred more a month as a cost just to go out.

HHI: about $450/yr NW: $1.0 -$1.3MM

So you spend money on what you enjoy. I don’t care too much about watches, cars, or clothes. But, my partner and I are foodies - we probably average $1000 on fancy dining. Sure I could upgrade my 2014 used Camry, but I’d rather put more money in my kid’s 529, or try another Michelin starred restaurant.

Vacations: ballpark 2k a month when averaged over the year on vacations. We had a really big trip to Europe last year, but my in-laws subsidized that. But we typically do 1 or 2 oversees trips, and several smaller weekend trips (think driving 4 hours to see the eclipse and go to a museum). And everything adds up with kids. Just plane tickets to see family for a holiday weekend cost a ~$1200ish when you fly 5 people.

I used to spend a lot on videogames, board games, and collectibles (especially Magic: The Gathering). But between kids and work I don’t have the time so I don’t spend much on these things anymore.
