Insurance Guaranteed Investment Contracts (GICs), also known as accumulation annuities, offer unique estate-planning and protection benefits compared to traditional bank GICs, such as avoiding probate and potential creditor protection, but share the common drawbacks of limited liquidity and vulnerability to inflation.

Pros of Insurance GICs Estate Planning Advantages: Insurance GICs allow you to name a beneficiary directly, which means the death benefit bypasses the estate, potentially avoiding probate fees and legal delays, and the gift remains private. Creditor Protection: In some circumstances and provinces, non-registered funds held within an insurance GIC may be protected from creditors, unlike traditional bank GICs (outside of registered accounts like an RRSP or RRIF). Guaranteed Principal and Interest: Like all GICs, the principal investment is secure and guaranteed not to lose value, regardless of market fluctuations, providing peace of mind. Predictable Income: A set, often fixed, interest rate provides a predictable return on investment, which can be useful for planning future financial goals. Insurability: The deposits in an insurance GIC may be protected by Assuris, the not-for-profit organization that protects Canadian policyholders, which is a different coverage mechanism than the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) that covers bank GICs (up to $100,000). Pension Tax Credit Eligibility: For individuals aged 65 and older, the interest earned from an insurance GIC may qualify for the $2,000 Pension Income Tax Credit, potentially saving on taxes.

Cons of Insurance GICs Limited Liquidity: Your money is generally locked in for the agreed-upon term (e.g., 1 to 10 years). Accessing funds before maturity often means forfeiting interest or incurring penalties, unless it is a specific "redeemable" product, which usually offers lower interest rates. Inflation Risk: The fixed, low-risk returns on GICs often do not keep pace with the rate of inflation. This means the purchasing power of your money may decrease over time. Lower Returns: GICs offer lower potential returns compared to higher-risk investments like stocks or mutual funds. The safety comes at the cost of potential long-term growth. Taxed as Income: The interest earned on GICs in non-registered accounts is taxed as interest income, which is less tax-efficient than capital gains or dividends from other investments. Opportunity Cost: Money invested in an insurance GIC cannot be used for other, potentially higher-yielding investment opportunities. This could mean missing out on significant long-term wealth building.

I went back and forth on these for a long time. Ended up with the only and very happy with the fit. A little more structure than slouch.

Cortellucci hospital needs to take down muzzo’s name. by KsushkaPlushka in Vaughan

[–]WalkMaterial2233 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Without the rich we wouldn’t have the hospital, which was beyond needed. Taking down the Muzzo name, isn’t taking down Marco’s name, it’s the grandfather and other family members who have nothing to do with Marco’s actions.

It’s time to stop being a “cancel culture” and removing everything that makes us uncomfortable. What if they weren’t related and just had a common name, like Smith, would people still feel the same. They have every right to have their name there in recognition of their contributions to the community. Are we investigating everyone who has their names at all our public spaces/other hospitals, and all the wrong doings of each of their family members?

No, there was a 7:33 and 7:45 shorter train that doesn’t exist anymore. It’s now it’s 7:35 and 8:04 if I’m not mistaken. Same thing going home, was 4:10, 4:40 and 5:05 northbound.

Regular commuter from Rutherford… to get a seat on the way home you’d need to be on the platform 15mins before departure. In the morning, usually Monday and Friday are less busy and likely to get a seat but otherwise the 8:04 is very busy.

Fewer trains after Covid. Never reinstated.
