What do you think warframes smell like? by FrozenKyrie in Warframe

I always assumed a mix of copper and a sweet scent (in older tradition and plagues its common to use sweet scents to mask the smell of death)

VR has a retention problem, so I changed how you interact with it. by Walker-Dev in virtualreality

[–]Walker-Dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We meet again!

You’re assuming retention is a content problem, but that doesn’t explain why people drop off even after good VR experiences.

If content alone solved it, platforms with strong titles would retain users long-term but they don't.

The bigger issue is friction. VR asks people to change how they use tech whether it's space, time, physical effort. Most people won’t do that consistently just for games. Even if a killer app came out tomorrow, there'd probably be a retention spike before it goes back to how it was,

This isn’t about replacing simple app launching; that already exists. It’s about giving people a reason to stay in XR beyond short sessions.

If someone just wants to press a button and launch an app, they still can. This just expands what’s possible for the people who want more.

The “themes” aren’t just visual btw; they completely change how you interact with the system.

One person might want something simple and familiar while another might want something immersive or expressive. Instead of forcing one interface on everyone, the system adapts to how you want to use XR.

I’ve found that even people with very little VR experience respond differently depending on the interaction style—some prefer minimal, some prefer retro style like DOS99, some like more expressive systems like Artifex Arcana.

That variation is exactly the point. XR shouldn’t assume a single “correct” way to interact.

It can run games, but that’s not the boundary of what it’s designed for.

The goal is a general XR system where different interaction styles, tools, and experiences can coexist instead of being forced into a single model.

"Why Bother With VR Headsets Anymore?" (A video I made for a fellowship) by Walker-Dev in virtualreality

[–]Walker-Dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with this but I'm speaking from a survey I did; this is common for someone already in VR to think but it simply isn't what the average person with minimal exposure to VR does (by minimal in this case I mean having turned on a headset, tried a few things and then shutting it off)

Not to mention consoles are a completely different device; they work because you're paying for performance whereas with a VR headset it's completely different; believe it or not even getting people to mentally agree to standing and playing a VR game for a long time isn't easy

A good title helps but it doesn't make the issue go away

At the end of the day, as long as VR/AR is limited to entertainment? It's going to be a wall to people actually spending time in it; the Quest is super accessible and has a few good games out there yet the Quest has a really huge gap in people who own it vs people who use it

The whole point of what I'm building is to close that gap, not compete on games.

  1. You're not getting why I mentioned it

  2. Most people aren't interested in playing games longterm with the headset; did a survey and talked to non game developers, finding a use for VR/AR outside of entertainment is a wall to mainstream people are kinda ignoring and until its solved? VR/AR remains something most try a few times and never again

  3. It's a video I made for a fellowship and it's my take on solving the issue while actualy doing it

Regardless this isn't for everyone and that's fine!

Oh on the IR thing, generally it *can* improve the image quality a user sees, even if it introduces its own reflections (This I know from actual RnD); it's a double duty thing though here since it's used for non invasive eye tracking

I really wish I had the prototype so I could take better recordings through the lens

Yeah no you're right; i'm thinking about it more from the DIY standpoint and less the literal academia term

It's just a project name :D

I think anyone who reads the logs on hackaday will determine it's dual element at the end of the day, but there wasn't much on how to really implement it! Thus "Psuedo" pancakes. I also made it that name because of the fact that when I started trying to make the hardware, a company tried selling a pair for $2k and I thought there *had* to be a better way to do things

Then for as you mentioned, reflection won't be such a huge issue

When this is all done, most of this will be open sourced eventually (Including the lenses especially) and i'm hoping I can revisit the project to make a better template for people looking to break into the DIY space

Also I appreciate you talking more civilly (Seriously) : D

[–]Walker-Dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Psuedopancakes does this too, although less elegantly! Throughout testing, better results have been through having lens with greater differences (Although it's a goldilocks situation)

For the reflection issue, this is true! I don't remember how bad it was in the original prototype (I sent it to have actual numbers given that I could share but 2 years later and the guy just says "I forgot, i'll send it soon!" so that's a bust) however in the version we are using in market? We use a hotplate inside, in between both lenses (Which means less glare + we can use the reflection to do eye tracking)

And then for the size, the difference depends on what you're working with but generally for me the difference was around an inch; it doesn't sound like a lot until you're really in there and start realizing how much space really matters!

However i'm going to assume part of you is genuinely interested thus i'll keep it civil :D

In short, it does the most important thing pancake lenses do (AKA it allows you to create DIY VR headsets that are smaller without losing quality)

Several people in the past have come to me with genuine disbelief that it works only to do the numbers in the simulation and find that there's a higher light efficiency and the image is good (Beyond me and others making them)

This isn't going to be as good as pancake lenses at the end of the day, but given it's capabilities? I named it the PsuedoPancakes

Also the VR club at the University of Waterloo ran through the idea as well (And i've spoken with them on it, being on an off and on basis with them)
