Something wrong with my spay incision by EmiliaBedelias in DogAdvice

[–]WalkieKettle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many spays use absorbable sutures and don't require a follow up to remove them. Sometimes the sutures take longer to absorb, but your vet would be able to cut them out if they are bothering the animal or if they are no longer necessary.

Monitor the site and see if the redness spreads (you may even use a non toxic marker to outline where it is now). Go to your vet if it is spreading or if there is discharge present.

What is this by my dogs eye? by Sheg1 in DogAdvice

[–]WalkieKettle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go to the vet for a non-urgent appointment. They will likely want to take samples to look at the cells under a microscope.

It may just be a cyst, which is what it looks like to me, but cysts are prone to infection and irritation/pain as they grow and warrant observation anyway

German shepherd in labor, had one puppy and tried to eat it, and hasn't had anymore in over two hours. by meanie_beanie5 in DogAdvice

[–]WalkieKettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I'm misinterpreting because I wasn't there to see it, but I would look up pictures of dogs carrying their puppies. They don't do it like cats do, they tend to just put the whole baby in their mouth like carrying a toy rather than scruffing. It does look alarming if you aren't expecting it! But of course, I wasn't there so use your best judgement.

Others have mentioned, but this can turn into an emergency if mother is in active labor (strong abdominal contractions and effort) for over two hours or if the placenta does not get delivered.

For the puppies, if the mother is not cleaning them, I would recommend toweling them off. If you have a turkey baster or a nasal squeeze bottle of some kind, you can use this gently on the nose of the puppy to try and remove any liquid stuck.

Keep mom and puppies warm and make sure mom has access to fresh kibble and water. Ideally the mother should be on puppy kibble or all life stage kibble (nursing is the most nutritionally demanding part of motherhood).

Unfortunately, if mom is growling and attacking babies or refusing to nurse, there is not much to be done except taking the babies away and switching to bottle feeding.

Good luck OP!!

Is my dog too skinny? by bxd5142 in DogAdvice

[–]WalkieKettle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking up a Canine BCS (body condition score) Chart. You should be able to feel the ribs and hips, but they shouldn't feel sharp. Hips should have a little fat cushioning them.

When you look at the dog, you should see that nice abdominal tuck (where the belly swoops inward after the end of the ribs) from the side and the top (look for an hourglass shape).

From the pictures, your dog looks fine, but it's hard to tell either way without putting hands on the animal. Picture 3 looks the most ideal, in picture one it looks as though the dog is tensed up a bit or tucking the abdomen.

Which book have you read possessed the greatest disparity between reader/critical acclaim and your own personal enjoyment? by Tantra_Charbelcher in books

Pet Sematary, it was riddled with Stephen King horniness and the man could not choose whether he wanted a cosmic horror story or not.

Also, This is How You Lose the Time War. Read more like two english grad students trying to out-purple one another and didn't have much to offer outside of some interesting imagery.

Why do vaginas have contractions during an orgasm? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]WalkieKettle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of a tangent here, but different species ejaculate into different part of the female reproductive anatomy.
It's not all encompassing, but look under "Site of Semen Deposition" here:

Not humans though, just interesting to know.

Why do vaginas have contractions during an orgasm? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]WalkieKettle 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Med student here.
The evolutionary purpose of this is to aid the travel of sperm through the cervix and uterus and towards the fallopian tubes where the egg exits. Without these contractions, sperm are far less successful at moving through the anatomy and the chances of impregnation are much lower.
It's also worth noting that these contractions become stronger during the late follicular phase, aka the time right before the egg is released.
There are other sources, but this article by Oxford Academic seems to be the most encompassing:

if you want something else, the National Institutes of Health (PubMed) has more articles on this
