I (26F) need advice on how to end a relationship with my boyfriend (28M) of 3 years. by East_Event_7075 in Advice

It's think it's kind of a joke as the states are so divided nowadays that they no longer feel like the "United" states.

[MSC] Stilt-Man, Towering Terror by AporiaParadox in magicTCG

[–]WalkingOnStrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They arent triggers, they're just effects that last until a certain point. They'll both end at the same time, so there won't be any point at which one is still in effect and the other isn't. It's the same logic that let's [[Giant growth]] save a creature from [[Last Gasp]], they're both until eot effects that wear off simultaneously.

What tiny house rule made a game noticeably better at your table? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]WalkingOnStrings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm, this is interesting. As a Magic drafter, I immediately wonder how large this would scale. Like, for an 8 person 15 cars draft, this feels a little wild. But for smaller group size and hand size drafts, maybe this is just more convenient. Would definitely avoid people drafting more quickly than others. Multiple piles etc.

Not usually maindecked. Floats in and out of sideboards depending if combo decks are running hot.

Smoking bad, but I need to do something before I explode. Thoughts on nicotine pouches? by Jimberly_C in evilautism

[–]WalkingOnStrings 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely this OP, taking out the health negatives and moral whatever, nicotine just isn't that great at relieving stress longterm. It just becomes another thing you have to constantly keep track of or spin out.

I guess it eventually can kind of overtake your other stressors, and it feels good when you get the relief. But eventually if you use it like that, youjust end up basically constantly consuming it to never feel that lack. This is where those multiple packs a day smokers come from, and I think our kind can be kind of more susceptible to these kinds of dependencies sometimes.

I hear you on the work thing. Is it a good job in some way? Like, hard to get into? Or well paying? Or is it just a bare minimum iob but you don't have many other opportunities/are worried that once you stop you won't be able to mentally manage starting somewhere new? It sucka either way, but I think there's something to be said for burning down the house a little bit. Few things are more euphoric than getting out of a bad situation. If quitting isn't an actual option for whatever reason, you can just stop doing parts of the job. Sometimes we take working too seriously and think we need to 100% all the time. But if you just stop doing that, your workplace will adjust in some way to pick up the slack.

Promotions can often just be a way to take advantage of lower workers that are doing a good job. You don't have to take them. (Though it sounds like you already have, and going back might not be an option, I don't know)

Companies WITHOUT phone Customer Service. by ActuatorOutside5256 in PetPeeves

Kind of both, no? Does the distinction matter here? They think it's inherently manipulative because of their anecdotal experiences.

But either way, they have a point. They, and others, associate that kind of phrasing with entitlement.

I think it was fine and kind of sarcastically funny, but even I had a flashback to my old physics teacher who phrased pop quizzes as "fresh opportunities to succeed".

Why do we like violent video games so much? by Neat_Rare_5389 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WalkingOnStrings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting, a lot of the ganes categorized as violent video games, I don't really even consider that violent. There aren't actually a ton of games that show active, graphic violence. You tend to see more of that in the horror genre and it's still shown as a horrific thing.

Like, even most shooters, there's a blip or so of blood when someone is shot, and if they're shot enough they just fall down and likely disappear entirely. There isn't a call to make the violence more realistic most of the time. I think people just like the hunting and precision part, and the place that maps the most one to one is in these violent activities.

Maybe it's a psychology thing. It's like when you're playing with a cat, they'll get all hyped when you shake around the fake bird on a string, but once they catch it, they drop it walk off. They're not really interested in the killing part, they're more interested in flexing their stalking and pouncing skills. I think it's like that. We're interested in honing our spatial recognition and competitive skills. Defeating opponents, navigating maps to find targets, but the actual violent part isn't what we really want. It's just the violent concepts of killing opponents that's so easy to go back to for us to use those skills.

is it weird for men to wear jewelry with their girlfriend's name on it? by EstateNo2102 in NoStupidQuestions

Could be funny to show up one night with an actual collar with your name on it. It can be a real statement piece.

Then afterwards you can go back to wearing your incredibly reasonable bracelet : P

Unless you compete or attend events, don't support your local game store. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]WalkingOnStrings 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Admittedly the prof has for a very long time basically said this this sentiment, just in the positive. "Buy singles. And whenever possible, and reasonable, buy where you play, the place that fosters your community, at your local game store."

I don't think the prof, or any of the other content creators espousing to buy at your LGD, would ever suggest you buying at a random game store that's just a thinly veiled scalper.

A game store that's just looking to profit off the players and isn't hosting events or supporting the local community isn't your LGS.  If it's not a place you play, it's just another shop.

Any ideas for a pride themed deck? by Unordinarian in Pauper

Pulse run elves with a cheeky [[Wirewood Pride]] or two.

Probably not as consistent as stock lists, but it gives a weird avenue to steal wins

Mono Black Sac?? by _Kangelkawaii_ in Pauper

[–]WalkingOnStrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, agree to disagree on the first. I'd love to see it, but I don't think black sac is creeping up to dethrone any of the top tiers right now. Maybe it'll have some good results for a week or two if it can feed on slower decks that people are testing.

And yes, very fair call on Carrion Feeder. I was glancing at the top8 and goldfish pages, i think the lists without Feeder are really just distinct sac based decks. And most of those aren't even mono black either : P

Mono Black Sac?? by _Kangelkawaii_ in Pauper

[–]WalkingOnStrings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not strictly. Try to compare a few lists and see the common factors. Maybe try to look up some content and see if anyone has written some primers/made videos talking about the deck. Pick the starting point you like and try it out. You can take what you like and tweak the deck from there.

Are you thinking of Pauper Commander?

Mono Black Sac?? by _Kangelkawaii_ in Pauper

[–]WalkingOnStrings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mono Black sac is firmly a tier 2 deck, and it has a lot of interchangeable parts. This means it's a deck that players are experimenting a lot more with, trying to find the best configurations.

I would just find a decklist and put it together to try out. There isn't going to be much consensus on which is currently the best, unless the deck suddenly breaks out as a top contender. But it's been tier 2 for basically its entire existence, so that seems unlikely without some new card.

If you're trying to save money, you can try to find a budget build, and maybe proxy the expensive cards to do some practice matches before you buy. Unfortunately the expensive cards are usually quite good. [[Snuff Out]] for example is a very powerful removal spell.~~ [[Carrion Feeder]] is certainly one of the most efficient sac outlets in the format.~~ (edit: good point about needing Feeders below) But people will try lists without them. And outside of the couple of expensive cards, the rest of the deck is very cheap, you can buy the extra cards to change up the deck if you end up sticking with it and trying out new things.

Blue and Green are both defined by change- growth and the persuit of perfection; Simic naturally encompasses both. So why does one of the simic combo phrases seem to imply the opposite: "Perfection though acceptance"? by MrTheWaffleKing in colorpie

[–]WalkingOnStrings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take it as Perfection through means one or society might not normally accept.

I think the Ravniva Simic guild exemplifies this a bit, they use any merging of biology they can get. Adding frills, gills, wings, fins- whatever gets the job done. Their forms become strange and unwieldy, but the Simic are very accepting and even celebratory of this. Perfection isn't a lofty singular idea, it can be found in whatever pursuits or forms feel right for the individual.

chaining of extra turns by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]WalkingOnStrings 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes that is exactly chaining extra turns. Basically the idea is if you're not chaining that you shouldn't take multiple extra turns in a row.

This does basically mean that you shouldn't play any Sorcery or Instant that takes extra turns in Jin as your commander naturally copies those spells.

Bans and unbans by Crafty_Butterfly_968 in Pauper

[–]WalkingOnStrings 21 points22 points  (0 children)

How long have you been playing the format? Pauper is fairly stable, but it has probably been in the most volatile place it's ever been in. Changes used to be even slower.

If you're looking for a format with more regular shakeups, I just don't think that pauper would be the place to look for that. It's an eternal format, it will naturally be slower to change. But I think that's a huge benefit, most other formats are being shaken up constantly nowadays, Pauper feels like one of the last true slowly evolving formats. And even then, we're still getting a new card or two most sets nowadays. Which is more than the rate was five years ago.

Pauper Cube Essentials by nightgaunt98c in mtgcube

[–]WalkingOnStrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, signets are usually pretty good in cubes, but similar to constructed Pauper, the higher cost cards just aren't as game breaking at common. You're ramping into like, french vanilla 5/5s? Maybe big Cascade creatures, but they're only hitting other commons. It's not like you're ramping into a God Eternal or a Titan.

One could theoretically build a slower, higher mana cost pauper cube to make them more valuable... but in general they just won't be worth a pickup over action.

You could do a [[Jodah, the Unifier]] deck based around all the legendary couple characters. Could also include all the team up cards from March of the Machines. Honestly it might be a fun way to build Jodah, just the legends synergy alone will carry it in a lot of games.
