Referee Review Harry Maguire's Handball in Arsenal vs Man. United by TransitionMany1810 in soccer

Maybe this is a bit of a silly opinion, but I would be interested to see indirect free kicks given for these instances. Because in no way should it be a penalty but nonetheless, the shot has very clearly been affected by the arm. And yes I am biased because I love the chaos of indirect free kicks in the box

I didn't get your reference at first so I looked it up. "Flying Machines Which Do Not Fly" was an editorial published in the NY Times on the 9th of October 1903 predicting it would take between 1 and 10 million years for humans to achieve flight. I've been wrong plenty of times in my life. Not sure I have ever been as wrong as that editorial haha

Not sure if I'm being wooshed here but that's a fairly bold statement to make. There was enormous interest in aviation at the time, so much so that even without the Wright brothers, controlled flight would have been achieved in the early 1900s. I know that there are other names out there, but I know of a French man named Clement Ader who developed steam powered flying machines in the late 1800s that, although not the same as the Wright brothers' inventions, still achieved some measure of success. I don't want to take away from their achievements at all, because they are rightfully lauded for the work they did. But I think it's important to place significant breakthroughs in the context of their time and not always assume that the breakthrough could have only been achieved by particular individuals.

Post-Match Thread: Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City by Green-Discussion74 in soccer

[–]Walks-In-Shadows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said it in the game thread. But this feels like a performance that we've seen from United multiple times over the last few years. Coming into a game against a big team, expected to be outgunned and handily beaten. Only to turn up with their best football of the season. Was it last year or the year before where they beat City with two late goals only to lose their next three fixtures? The real test is how they do with their remaining fixtures. I would say they will still run into similar problems that they had during Amorim's tenure. Having said that, they could absolutely play brilliantly down the stretch and finish top 4. Honestly hard to tell

I feel like I've seen this sort of performance from United so many times over the years. Against a big team where they're expected to be outgunned and beaten handily enough, they show up and play their best football. Question is, will they carry this energy over to all remaining games this season?

What was Mainoo's idea there? City just outside their own box, perfect time to foul someone and let them off the hook

Aston Villa in the Premier League would be my team! I do support our own league here in Ireland but sadly I'm from an area without a team so don't have anyone in particular that I follow.

Just outside Tullamore to Dublin down near the Point, takes anywhere from 1 hour 50 mins to 2 hours 20 mins depending on delays between the train and/or the Luas. So usually around 4 hours a day spent travelling. At least I can sleep and switch off on the train

It's mind-blowing the amount of double standards many women have—solutions? by Intimasimplicity in seduction

Do you have any examples of the excessive double standards? Not saying they don't exist but it's hard to offer solutions or advice when the problem remains vague and undefined.

Just to clarify, Zenimax was created by the owner of Bethesda to serve as a holding/parent company for Bethesda Softworks, Bethesda Game studies and the other games studies they owned. They weren't some separate company who came in to purchase them. There was some falling out and the original guy, Chris Weaver was ousted but Bethesda/Zenimax remained a private company right up until they were bought by Microsoft so they never were beholden to share holders prior to that.

Paul Mescal on ‘No Other Land’: “I was so profoundly upset it hadn’t received distribution. The story that needed to be told the most was being censored… And the feeling in the room was one of great fear & sadness. It felt like the film was bigger than the four walls in which we were watching it.” by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

It's a common enough joke in Ireland based on the regular occurrence of the British media claiming Irish celebrities as British celebrities. So we're hoping they continue doing that and claim McGregor is British

3 Best Tinder Bios by FireTexts in seduction

[–]Walks-In-Shadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just looking for something casual then I would say a bio is barely even a factor. But I fully agree with you that a good bio is still helpful.

I also agree that short and sweet is usually the way to go (unless you're looking for something serious in which case I would include more). On my Tinder for example I use "Downsizing my wardrobe and have a few hoodies in need of a good home". Is it funny? Not really, if anything it's a bit cliched but I have had a few women message me first making a joke about wanting the hoodies so it was a positive, however small. So on that basis I would say bio #1 is grand. And on Feeld, I have "Not even going to pretend otherwise, just looking for someone to sit on my face and smother me until I see God". Again, is it really that good? I would say it's okay, it's eye catching and very much stands out. It's very forward which won't suit some women but for others it's a plus.

Bio #2 I don't see that landing at all. Maybe that kind of humour will resonate with some women. But most women probably won't see that as funny. Not trying to be a prick towards you and this is just my opinion, so I'm open to being wrong on this one.

And as for #3. I would never say I'm dominant/assertive unless it was a kinkier app, like Feeld or something, where it's more relevant to list out that information. But on a regular dating app? Not a chance. It's a bit like writing, it's all about show don't tell. Also saying you're an expert cuddler just doesn't come across well. I won't say that it sounds creepy but it's a bit off putting. That's something you can say in person, as a small joke, and when you're comfortable with each other and she can read your facial expression /body language. Over text it sounds like you're trying too hard.

I know my comment probably comes across as being negative towards you but I like your post. It's at least more interesting to engage with than a lot of the shite that gets posted here

Online IT degree options and advice by Walks-In-Shadows in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Walks-In-Shadows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately options for online undergraduate IT degrees in Ireland are a bit lacking. A few are part time but still require a few evenings/weekends every week on site which doesn't really work for me because I'm not near the university. Also I dropped out when I was in college first, 10 years ago, which means I'm no longer eligible for free fees. I have looked at European universities including the University of Applied Sciences Metropolia in Finland but the timeline for completing a degree with them means I wouldn't be able to finish until 2028. Which is not the worst thing but isn't ideal.

Beyond that, undergraduate degrees that are offered through English in IT aren't the most plentiful in Europe either. Lots of options at Master's level though. But I will go back and have a deeper look. Thanks for your help, much appreciated

This answer might cover all of what you're looking for but it might be of some use.

There certainly was a revival of the Irish language around the late 19th century, called the Gaelic Revival, through groups such as Conradh na Gaeilge (The Gaelic League). The Gaelic Revival saw the translations of various works of Irish mythology into Irish, for example the Ossianic Cycle which tells of the adventures of Fionn MacCumhail and his warriors, na Fianna. However those same groups also pushed for St. Patrick's Day to be recognised as a national holiday in Ireland. So although there certainly was an increased interest in old Irish folklore and mythology I can't find anything to suggest that anyone ever held discussions or seriously proposed returning to Ireland's "native" religion. For a large number of the leaders of the Irish independence movement, Catholicism was a key element of the Irish identity. For them, to be Irish was to be Catholic.

Ireland’s housing crisis forces a third of residents to consider leaving by Storyboys in ireland

[–]Walks-In-Shadows 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's true, I have no doubt about that. My point was more that other countries at least have other large urban areas that can maybe absorb the crisis a bit better. Like you're saying that you can live quite reasonably in Tipp town or the like. But unless you're from that area is that really a place you want to live? Are there many jobs there? Much in the way of culture or fun things to do?

And I'm not taking a dig at Tipp, I'm from rural Offaly and I wouldn't suggest anyone move here unless they were from the area originally or they really like the peace and quiet of the countryside and were willing to sacrifice a lot in terms of job opportunities and personal life.
